nick, really cool as always. a turntable anim of that would be neato.
duncan, that's lookin crazy, can't wait to see more.
here's a model i originally did for a cgfeedback.com contest. i just added zbrush hair and polypainted him. hopefully its obvious who he's supposed to be. the renders are pretty much straight from zbrush, just added a background and tweaked levels.
Try to make sure the larger rock forms look good before you start detailing them. Get the grains and chunks worked out early so you have a baseline from where to flow your edges
EG:
Now that I look at these like this... I like the middle form the best. The last one has lost much of its large shapes in needless detail. Hrmmm I'ma go back to that file and start again from that. That's the great thing about increment saves!

Eric- you sir... you're a beast. Looks great. Did you end up using any of the 'grooming' tools while working on this/ what'd you think about working with zbrush hair?

Yeah, you'r right. I'm like a kid with an ice cream (or something ), i want to do everything at once. (Yes, that was an extremely bad metaphor). Next time up I promise not to start without reference and blocking out the bigger shapes first
ive been checking this site out for a while now. building up the guts to post something.
i was inspired by Jessica Dinh's work so i played around with a simple wood texture for a little while.
it needs a lot of work before i start tiling and make each plank a little more unique but nonetheless i would love some tips and feedback!
sorry my first post is not as epic as most of the other work i see here, haha.
Wetterschneider: They're characters from the artbook project I'm working on. The tall guy his the hero of the story, B.R. Avery, and the other two are members of his 'Battling Brigands'.
I feel like I had somewhat of a chance, but between this, the STEM challenge, and personal projects over 1 week of vacation I just couldn't finish it. I WILL FINISH THIS THOUGH.
cool weapons cody and brianp. looks like a lot of peeps must've been at work all weekend.
organizedchaos- thanks! yeah it was pretty fun playing with the groom tools. it usually starts out looking totally ridiculous, but after some tweaking it looks ok. i found myself using groombrush1, groomfast lengthen, groomclumps, and turbulence. i'm still having issues coming up with a good hair material and colors. i also get crazy hair strands once in while that are really wide that you can fix with the move tool.
I missed the deadline by a couple of minutes because I failed to figure out the time zone difference properly... :poly127:
Still, I learned a lot from this and it's great to see all the other entries, gratz to everyone who entered!
If you guys could ease my butthurt with some solid crits I'd appreciate it
that is a bitching hammer benji, whats the highpoly like ?
Thanks man. I kept the high pretty basic, as my sculpting skillz needed some work and I didn't have much time for this. I did a lot of the normal detail by painting heightmaps and putting them through crazybump.

Nice!
What was the challenge as I can see everybody posting sten images, any links?
I have bin doing this Hellreaver for a week now and started to light and hit some renders, also trying to figure out if i should put it on a stand of some sort so i can do a turn around of it
Have a bit more to do with the color map, planning on creating a bit more contrast between the limbs and the shell, and then adding the dark spots to the back side of the shell. Then I'll begin the specular map.

WOW, Thanks so much! I tried doing some larger rocks earlier this month and it just kept looking weird and random, sometimes a picture can make everything fall into place!
And here's the rock texture in question that I've been working on.
And another thing I'm getting ready for the portfolio!
Nice!

The STEM challenge was a educational video game challenge put on by the U.S. government for $10,000. So not specifically about game art. Just google "stem challenge" if you want to know more.
started working on the cover for my dvd reel :P just printed on shitty paper with the shitty home-printer, but even with my shitty cutting-skillz the size was good and fit the cover perfectly!
gonna do a booklet with the same front as the dvd cover (but with just a brown back, maybe some text at the bottom), the booklet will have some info about how to play the game that's on the dvd, with some screenshots of the rig and whatever else kind of "behind the scenes"-stuff one would expect
