Not sure how it is in the real thing (I'm assuming pretty similar), but that surface texture (the ripply lines) read really noisily (in fact it kinda hurts my eyes trying to focus on those areas.
Totally accurate texturing. The moray (sp?) effect is a bitch to avoid.
Done. Still things I'd like to change, but I have to move on at this point. Not sure if it'll go in my portfolio or not.
Hat is a separate 512 material so I could use a detail map, and the beard is two level of alpha, one for the main beard, one for stray hairs. I hate realtime hair.
Looks great! I just had one quick suggestion, Im not awesome at paintovers, but here goes.
Your spec is killing it! The eyes look very strange with that double highlight and super bright iris (almost looks like cat eyes). The skin is kind of plasticy because its just too much specular. Looks good though!
Edit: also made some changes to the hat color/spec and expression, you can take em or leave em!
Just a quick tileing wall, floor and trim texture. Took a break from my bigger project to mess around with NDO2 some more. Just AO, Spec and Normal at the moment.
crossposting my thread :
after few months I made (finally) this PSO-1 scope, and honestly I am quite proud of it :P , however edges could be softer, so here are pics and hope u like it
Any critics are welcome
@mcneal_e: Really nice difference, I do feel like you dont need to tell modelers all this stuff. I feel the most important things are views from different angles. As a modeler I know one of the best things is interpreting it yourself, I feel like your to explicitly telling the artists what to do.

you deadened the eyes and erased his half-smirk. have you ever even seen a bill murray film?
Had some down time recently and was able to do some work on this. Did the sculpt over the course of the last year whenever I had free time and did the low poly + textures this past week. Still some diffuse painting to do (not happy with the texture on the ass cloth) and the spec and hair still need a lot of love but overall I'm happy with where it's at.
Also random side note but wtf is up with Wacom's QC lately? Had my Intuos5 die this week completely out of the blue after only a few months of light use. My old Intuos3 lasted like 7 years.
I was playing around with squarish shapes in maya and I created a little art test. It's nothing special and definitely not game-rez (the leaves are all separate planes) but I kind of liked the feel of it. Hate the grass though.

Which wasn't the right movie to draw from. And you're right, didnt need changing.
Anyways, I still stand by the face has far too much specular and the hat definitely shouldnt have much if any specular. All the rest was just personal preference.

dustinbrown, im enjoying those mechanical serratus muscles!
I second that. The original sculpt was better. It captured his likeness from the front indeed.

Something different and quick this morning.

Never posted in this thread before, but here's a semi-done piece I worked on as an assignment for school.
she looks killer lucius!!
I suppose I probably took it too far. It just looked like he was wearing some strange light contacts like these.

and I wanted it more like this

For the expression I guess I was just thinking Royal Tenenbaums.
