Since this is the music creation thread of Polycount I figured you might like to know about this cool Kickstarter project, Imitone which is an app (Win/Mac/Linux) that coverts sounds in realtime to MIDI signals.
Though this video is a demo of using an instrument -> MIDI, the coolest thing is that you don't need to be able to play an instrument at all. Imitone can convert vocals (singing, whistling, humming) to MIDI as well. Check out it's promo video or the demo partway down the kickstarter page.
Bringing up an old Thread but this is what I found out about Music.
I have made a few tracks myself and I would like to find if they are of any use to someone developing Videogames.
- Any advice to a freelance composer to find who may want to license his music?
- Are those "royalty free music" like http://www.premiumbeat.com sites a good option?
As for the sharing, here's my craziest creation so far:
slightly over a year later I bought a MicroBrute to accompany it. I also picked up a Volca Beats drum machine & a mixer so I no longer have an excuse for not recording anything.
sorry for not posting any music - I got synth fever and had to post about it.
Bought FL Studio some months back as a hobby to basically just work on something for fun that I wouldn't care if it sucked or not/a small break from the visual stuff.
It's a little repetitive but I thought it might of worked for one of my small game levels
Needs work but here's a WIP of me covering Zombie Zombie's Driving This Road Until Death Sets You Free. Volca Beats, Minibrute, Microbrute and theremin!

In the late 80's I tried to teach myself guitar in the hopes of composing music and got interested in the idea of the engineer as the invisible 5th member of any great rock recording. I was computer illiterate at the time. So I bought a fostex 280 analog cassette 4-track ( never did spend the $$ fer ADATS ) and A Roland GR-1 guitar synth to record and compose with. However I never got far passed the audio engineering study, Guitar practice and musical theory phase before the family business swallowed all my precious time at night.
Shortly after I began work at a local TV station and began learning Pro Tools and AVID. I assumed that this kind of MIDI solution was probably right around the corner and put down the "music thing" thinking till then would be a waste of time! :poly127:
Now that it's here...
I imagine it would be nearly impossible to setup the MIDI to realistically playback Bass Drum , Cymbals and Snare Drum type scenarios?
Roland lag can be perceived at times and definitely show up in midi recordings.
Sometimes the Piezo crystals could get confused and u would have do another take to make up fer resulting wonky artifacts. ( I'd definitely be terrified of as much playing live. )
I really regret not keeping up with music aspirations. I wanna give this MIDI tech a try... Thanks fer the heads up Ben!
I think I recorded this right before Alesis ADATS and digital recording on SVHS revolutionized home audio engineering? u can "buy it now" on e-bay today fer $78!!!
circa 1990 guitar synth midi composition to practice improvising solo melodies. Guitar solo recorded direct on the final mix to VHS tape. ( ada MP-1 tube pre-amp, Alesis quadraverb gt and Ada microcab all recorded direct synching midi playback, fostex 280 4 track recording, and VHS hi-fi deck [ supposedly more analog overdriven warmth "room" than the 1/4 cassette for the soloing ] )
Simpson's episode dialog was an accident from previous recording on the tape
I think the Fostex is a lot less analog ghetto then my insecurities gave it credit for back then...
But I also had a Teac/Tascam 44 1/2 reel to reel 4 track that I feel like an idiot fer selling real cheap. ( computers and tube pre-amps were going to serve all my needs I thought )
Other than what you see on my channel, I have no experience with orchestration at all, and only a little with composition. I took piano lessons when I was young, and continued to play the piano well into my adult life, and listened to lots of movie soundtracks and classical music growing up.
Why is Pro Tools "industry standard" again? Nobody I know who does audio engineering, recording, or composing uses it.
Maybe it is used often, but I guess I don't see what the fuss is about.

personally, I come from a Broadcasting background so over 18 years of being use to Avids and ProTools.
( still have an quadra 900 with original nubus Avid hardware )

For editing audio only, I think that only recently the competitors catch up, for example Reaper or Samplitude/Sequoia, but at that time, there were nothing that offered this kind of editing precision, it also had acceleration boards (DSP) that could handle many plugins in real time.
It have also full control of MIDI data, if you have different machines it's handy.
But now, with all the instruments that are software, Pro Tools (which only reads RTAS, TDM and AAX plugins) is a dying dinosaur, I think it's the heaviest DAW around, for electronic music is not very recommended.
In the end it's all hype, the pros uses it, so it must be awesome, with all the alternatives, Pro Tools, it's the last one I would use, followed by Logic.
I've been messing with a procedural music generator called cgMusic. Maybe it's cheating but I have a problem where I can come up with good riffs but not whole songs, this thing gives me a jumping off point.
The end result of a few days of tinkering is a song for my Metroidvania game, Astrovania. The initial idea was what if a Metroidvania actually mashed up the genres of it's namesakes rather than just using the mechanics, so gothic horror in space. (it's just a concept game, I don't know if I'll ever make it)
Got a 20% off coupon code from guitar center. On purchases over $45.
Since it expires on the tenth of June in less than 2 days and I am not going to be making any major purchases...
I figured I'd offer it to the fine music makers here at polycount.
1rst one to message me with their e-mail addy and I'll forward it today.
It's been a while, but I started a new song. Sorry for the cutoff at the end, it's not finished. I really love orchestral music, my long-term goal is to make something digitally that sounds convincingly real. Wide Open World WIP03 - Makkon Soundcloud
I like your music. The instrumentation is competent. The sound is pleasing. I think your main melody is a little on the simple side though, and you might want to break up the repetition not just by way of using different instruments but also some more melodic, harmonic or rhythmic contrast. Then again, the piece might be intended this way (game soundtrack?). Nice sounding samples, which ones did you use?
@kneedeepinthedoomed Thanks. The track is intended to be rather consistent, but I agree that I needed to spend more time in making alternate melodies and chord structures. I'm a little rusty, I'll do better next time. This particular song used the kontakt sound libraries Albion I, Cinematic Strings 2, Truestrike, Embertone Chapman Trumpet, and Cinebrass. I composed everything in Studio One 2.

And I though I'm very original that I started diving lately into music
Nothing to show yet. Just started with Studio One like two weeks ago. Maybe next year, when I move from making comfortable to experimenting part of my music carrer.

A lot of this stuff is clear and sharp, are you guys mastering your own stuff? What are you using if you are?
Cheers
no need for the radio, I'll just tune into this thread instead!
Deathstick, in your case, I could imagine those in a puzzle game.

BTW guys, maybe i'm a bit late with this announcement, but there is a major composer competition still open for entries (DEADLINE: November 4th).
Check the link for the ISC 2014:

There are some big names among the Judges.
I'm participating with 2 songs in "Instrumental".
I have one of them in Spotify:

I'm sorry, youtube went and lowered the quality of that video by itself. That's right, Youtube, kick the poor indie guy.
It's a theme for my game. Orchestral stuff. Still trying to improve it. I have an old PC, so can't add an endless amount of tracks.
This particular song used the kontakt sound libraries Albion I, Cinematic Strings 2, Truestrike, Embertone Chapman Trumpet, and Cinebrass. I composed everything in Studio One 2.
and I made a theme song for Killingpeople cuz I'm a fanboy
