Everything should be pretty clear, as we put a lot of effort into streamlining the release. So go ahead,
download and try it out!
However, we do ask the following:
If, after this, you're still absolutely sure you can not find an answer to your question or solution for your problem, go ahead and ask us.
Oh and, do show us your awesome stuff created with the shader, we'd love to add it to the gallery or as a header image even!
Oh and if you'd like to follow:

this is great!
Yesssssssssssssssssssss
(Does this have anything similar to quality normals? or is that obsolete in later versions of max?)
We got you covered man: http://xoliulshader.com/help/scr/Qualified_Normals_Toggler.htm
Grats with the release guys!!
Going to give it a try right away.
Awesome, Thanks a bunch! Loved 1.6, can't wait to give this a spin tomorrow.
awesome. cant wait to re-render my folio pieces.
So I read the help and then ran max as administrator snd installed using the Run Script function in max. The shader seemed to have installed fine. I loaded it to one of my empty slots and applied it to a model I am working on. I try to use a preset or load a texture into one of the slots I get an error. A seemingly different error depending on what I try to do.
Here is a picture of the errors. (The top image is when I try to load an image into the diffuse slot - The bottom image is when I try to 'Apply Preset Without Light Creation')
I was getting a different error when I tried to 'Create your save onmi lightscene' that I can't seem to reproduce now. It said something about referencing a deleted object.
And this last image is what happens to the material UI after I try to load something in to the diffuse slot.
- I am using max 2012 64-bit (Made sure to get all Hotfixes and updates)
- I made sure that my video drivers are up-to-date
I don't know if any or all of this is relevant but I tried supplying as much information as I could, sorry if it is to much or not in the right place. (Edited for spelling errors)
the file that is says is missing, is in the directory. my netframework is fine apparently when i tried to reinstall.
Nice dude. Loved your other shaders.. will defiantly try this out
Thought i'd write down what i did to fix my problem to help the next guy out.
So my problem was what some other people are getting, Error: Could not install.
Like Dismembered wrote the solution to this may be to run Max in administrator mode.
To accomplish this hold down CTRL and SHIFT and then click the 3dsmax exe.
Once i had it opened up in administrator mode i ran into another problem which was that i couldn't drag drop the mzp file into the viewport the way it is shown in the install guide.
You can solve this problem by unzipping the mzp file, make a new folder then go to run script on the MAX script (top left) and then run the mzpinstall.ms file from the folder you just created.
Once you run it the installer should pop up and you should be able to install it correctly.
Hopefully this can be of help to someone
Again thanks to Laurens and Robbert for this shader system, i'll gladly donate and help you guys continue developing awesome shaders.
The dotnet issues are tied to it in a way, but we're not exactly sure yet what causes them, as only very few people experience this. Basically its telling you it can't create the thumbnails. I would suggest to check if it works in admin mode...
The csc.exe error almost certainly is a dotnet installation issue. Must say I've never seen this before.
By the way, how does the shadows from the shader interact with the built in shadow from the viewport ?
For some reason it only happens with a few models... Any ideas?
Maxscript errors please report to us! Tell us how to reproduce them! We want to get rid of all of these.
Shadows should update normally?
And the shadows the shader uses are the built shadows. That's why they can be a bit tricky sometimes, Autodesk has left some problems with them.
Oh and people, like I said, the install problem is detailed in the help too.
Default settings? Or are you using shadows? Soft shadows can do that sometimes, it's Autodesk's fault. Try switching to Hard and see if that fixes it.
Again, the help tells you to be wary of soft shadows.
EDIT: Found something else. If you work on a file on some computer and then open it on another one where 3ds Max was installed in a different path, the script can't find any of the bitmaps used for the shader UI like the placeholder images etc.
You need to create a new Xoliul shader in the material editor to make it work.
Thanks!
First of all, congrats for this great release. Good job here.
And this is my issues :
Downloading : ok
Installing : ok
but this is what I've got when I try to load the shader :
So, did I do something wrong? I've tried to reinstall it, but still the same errors.
@ Joebount : Laurens is making some changes to the frontpage. You can download the tool here - http://xoliulshader.com/download
One question : when I install the shader, should I wait for the install screen to disappear, or should I clic on the "Exit" button when the "XoliulShaderUI is installed in '$Scripts' success" appears?
-do not have Nitrous disabled...
-Do not have the two Xoliulshader_2.0 fx files in the maps/fx directory
Both of these things are covered in detail in the help!
edit: i don't get the website problem, I fixed it 3 hours ago i thought ? The coming soon page isn't even on the server anymore...
Did some more messing around with it over lunch, does wonders at polishing up unfinished turds
Thank you. I'm not running on max2012, so it was not about Nitrous. But you're right windows didn't paste the 2 .fx files in the fx directory. Now it works fine
