Buckster: I wholeheartedly agree on the pants' volumes from the front, and that's one of the main areas I mentioned that needed some more luvin'.
Remmers: Bedankt!
I have been contemplating the idea of a staff actually... In fact, it would complement the entire idea of Kung Lao as the Monkey King, but I'm thinking it might take away focus from his hat. But this calls for experimenting!
Either way, the staff idea made me all giddy; so here's a quick lunchtime sketch. I was thinking an extending and contracting staff like in the legend.
End parts made of gold with ornamental bits all the way and the shaft that effectively extend in parts of engraved wood (most likely bamboo).
really digging the monkey king theme maph. excellent block in as well. cant wait to see some sculpting on this guy. i do think some symmetricalness would help though. the monkey faces on his shoulders and knees are a bit redundant. looking forward to seeing more
Just started sculpting after setting up the most important base meshes, so nothing to show just yet, hopefully soon though.
BetelGeist: How d'you mean "symmetricalness"? The dude's pretty symmetrical right now... The monkey masks on the shoulders might be a tad too much yes, but I'll see how they turn out when sculpting.
Yeah, I've been thinking about ways to make him more asymmetrical. I could give him the obligatory sash but you know... I'll play around with the concept some more.
Maybe I could have a bunch of small ropes and beads running from the right side of his chest all the way to the left side on his back, with a bunch of small chinese charms hanging on them.
Also, I was planning on give the shoulder monkey masks a different facial expression. Angry vs happy or something, dunno.
And I also need some place for him to put his staff away...
I don't know the original char, cause I'm not fan of MK. But your model is looking great, no doubt. Great silhouette. And thank you for visiting my thread!
Started sculpting and slowly soldiering on... Most of this stuff is just first pass and standins. Gonna start adding the hard surfaced stuff when the main volumes are in place.
I probably overdid it with the cloth though... And yes, he has monkey-like ears.
I like the monkey ears! And good job on cloth already really looking forward to updates but this one is already in my reference for cloth. Really have to work on it myself, practice practice practice.
sweet wrinkles man, are you going to keep the sculpt mirrored? you can probably get away with unique wrinkles on each size considering our texture allowance.
Awesome work mate, I really like the folding you've got going, ace.
I would push the arms forward a tad and maybe make 'em a teeeeemy bit shorter, might just be my taste though.
You are really kicking it, thank you for the inspiration!
Cheers for the nice comments guys! Much appreciated!
AKAperly: actually, none of the cloth is symmetrical, but I can see how you ended up thinking that. The previous WIP shot didn't really do it justice.
Buckster: You reckon? I think the arms are pretty good looking, just needs a lot more work anatomy-wise. But I'll check it out how it looks with shorter arms.
Either way, 1am over here, and I'm dead tired. Just spent the entire evening modeling that chest piece... Gawd I'm slow when it comes to hard surface!
Dustin:
1. Base meshes for monkeymasks, similar to the ones on the knees. But never mind that! I'm changing them to something mucho cooler, should be in the next update (tonight if I'm feeling lucky).
2. Indeed!
3. Yes. This head is pretty rough, hardly gave it any thought to be honest (I know, bad!). I like the previously mentioned suggestions of giving him some monkey like features. But it all needs some tender luvvin' anyway. Something I plan on doing once I finish up the shoulder armor I have planned.
Either way, I want to try and capture the kung lao look of MK2 on his face, something that is pretty much lacking right now. Heck, I don't even like the face he's got right now!
4. Let's agree to disagree on that one.
I love the style you're going with this one. One of my favorite entry so far. I'm looking forward to seeing what'll come up with the shoulder pad. I've got nothing to crit so far, except maybe the folds which need maybe some work to make it believable.
Keep it up !
I am really digging the puffy cloths man. I am also loving the tight fitting wrappings around his forearms and calves. The chest piece is awesome....ahhhh all of it is just freaking ace man. I have been watching your guy from the start and I have loved every update. Keen to see some more.
Duncan: Cheers mate! Loving both your Dom War and Brawl entry as well!
Seth: Thanks man!
The matcaps I'm using are Undoz's Mudbox materials. Best matcaps ever imho, great for sculpting and rendering. I used to use Ralph Stumpff's Grey Resin a lot, but these are a whole lot better imho.

Update: Been feeling sick the past few days, so progress has been hella slow. But I need to get this shit modelled out by the end of this weekend, so I get about 4-5 weeks for texturing/rigging/posing, something I really need to work on.
Next up, finishing up his face, starting with the hair, adding the belt and leg armor bits, etc... Gonna make the shoulder monkeys asymmetrical as well. Like a different expression or color scheme on the left one or something.
Also, his armor needs a lot more stress and wear, but I'll save that for in the final stage.
Everything is really believable! The clothing folds, the different pieces of armor... it's all coming together really well! I can only hope his trusty hat will be equally inspired. Can't wait to see him textured.
Great work man. My only concern is still being able to identify the character as Kung Lao. Maybe when you throw the hat in there it'll be automatic. Great job!

I'll look into the monkey face, Ravenslayer.
Still plowing through it all.

onelunglewis: Yeah, good point! I'll fix that.
could I be an arse and ask what matcap you use for your presentation shots....it looks yummy to sculpt with.

I'm absolutely in love with the details. Those shoulders are especially sweet.
Keep it up.
