Cheers guys! I'm going to explore 1 & 3 some more.
Story wise, I wanted to insert an event in his biography that would explain his tranformation into the Monkey King.
So I was thinking that on his journeys he came across the mountain that imprisoned the Monkey King. The glorious ape thought Kung Lao could set him free and he offered to help him on his quest to kick Goro in the royal Shokan balls.
Kung Lao agreed, but only to set the Monkey King free after Goro was defeated. So the monkey man gave Kung Lao one of his magic hairs and he told him to swallow it. Ba-da-bing! Instant Monkey powah including a tail!
Or something down those lines.
Either way, here are some more tryouts and a couple of face paint ideas.
Epic dude, I like 1 mainly because it reads clearer - not sure about the paint yet - hard to tell at this early stage - but its going to be sick i know it !
Thumbs are looking nice. I personally think I would keep the facepaint on him minimal, maybe just as an accent. Having a full face covered might take away from the "Kung Lao" feel. Maybe something on half his face? or covering 1 eye or something?
Cheers for the suggestions guys! Mucho appreciated!
Hazardous: Yeah, I know it's early for face paints and all that shizz, but I tend to block trying to work out body details. It's a thing I have.
And cheers! Now get cracking on your Chun Li already, ya slacker!
CJE: Good idea! I'll play around a bit with that. But do you think a full face paint would truly take the Kung Lao feel away? I always felt it was his iconic hat that defined him as a character. But you make a valid point none the less.
seven: Awesome idea, as stated above, I'll try that out!
Anyway, 1 got the most votes and I personally feel more comfortable doing that one as well, although I will take some elements from 2 in there as well. I'm quite fond of the arms and greaves of 2. Time for a mash-up!

I guess I would have to see it in action to be sure, it was just my first reaction. If you think you can make it work, go for it!
CJE: For my composition shot I was gonna do a pose where Kung Lao is tossing his hat about a bit, 'cuz that's his thang! So you'd be able to see his face in full glory.
Jacque: Cheers for the images! In fact, I already started incorporating monkey masks in the design during my lunch break! The tail from 3 was pretty much a given imho. Much more interesting then a bland monotone one.
Really cool idea man. I was wondering where your Dom War thread was.... and then I realised it turned into a Polycount Brawl thread . Great work and good luck man.
Duncan: Yeah, Brawl sounded more interesting then Dom War to be honest.
gaganjain: Yes, the face paint is part of the plan.
'nother update. Pretty happy with the concept so far; knowing myself I'll probably change a couple of things (especially the waist area) when I'm modelling, but it's handy to have this sort of direction to fall back on.
I do wonder if the feathers detract from the monkey theme; however, I really like what they do for his silhouette and they look cool. I don't know, just a thought.
kool concept
Your nail down armor and those plate around his knee.Only thing those shoulder feather don't get alone with whole character ,bcoz there already cloth pieces around his leg and hand...
His face and that look is killer maph..
Nice idea with Monkey king mix. Have a look on the Monkey gg character "Enslaved" game, he had really nice and interesting stylized proportions. They have a 3d model view on the official site.
Thanks guys.
As far as the feathers go, they are actually an integral part of the story of Sun Wukong. After defeating the dragons of the four seas in battle, he forced them to give him a golden chainmail and a phoenix feather cap. But seeing he'll be tossing that hat about it, I though about putting the feathers on his shoulders. Works for me, but I'll probably experiment with having the feathers on his hat as well.
FirstKeeper: Yeah, I checked him out; his proportions are neat and they did an excellent job with the hair and the face paint.
Right, did the blockout today. Not sure what I'm going to do with the back, as it need some more luvin'. But I think the proportions are pretty much set.
Is it supposed to be that he actually has a monkey tail? or is it more of a decorative costume sort of thing kind of like King in the Tekken series? I ask because it's looking a bit stuck on at the moment, and honestly I'm not sure you really need it.
Archanex: I kinda like the tail because of the whole monkey thing and it makes for a nice silhouette imho. Agreed it looks pasted on, but hopefully I can fix that when I get started on the high poly goodieness.

Number 1's got my personal vote, needs more stringy bits though.
I vote for 1 and 3.
I dig 3 with pants and lower from number 1. Good luck, mate!
I like 1 and 6
GL! Waiting for updates

Edit: for those that care, some info about the legend of the Monkey King. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Wukong
Looking forward to seeing more! Seeing the Monkey King makes me wish I chose SonSon from MVC2, lol.

I prefer the overall shape of the lines on Face 2 because it looks most like a monkey, but you should push it WAAAAAY more.
There might be elements you can grab from asian monkey masks:

Are going paint face ? like you showed in face paint ideas image

make it happen!
That's what I did. Bit of a hack job, but: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2759490/brawl_logo.psd
Looks fine scaled down!

looking forward to more!
make him taller like firebert said, he is a little on the stubby side
keep going
Hope this is better.
Edit: Now that I look at it, some parts may need some more lurv, but I'll reserve that for the highpoly pass.
It's not really a Kung Lao thing but maybe he needs a (monkey) staff
