You guys should hit up Catalyst Labs, they currently hold the rights, and seeing as how the company was turned over to the artists (from my understanding) about fall 2009-ish? (can't remember heh), they'd probably be super stoaked to spot you guys some reference material from their book arts.
So uh...anybody wanna do one of these battles with(or should I say against) me?
I was just thinking I'd like such a mini competition as well and I'd love to compete with you, though I think you are a bit above me in skill.
PS: I'm going to go for Gav on this one, because his name is the first in the alphabet and I think his DomWar entry was pleasantly unique and characterful. And Hazardous, shame on you for being such a one trick pony.

I'd be interested in doing this. Some sort of rules or guidelines would be mighty helpful, though. I think if people are going to keep discussing this, it should probably be moved to a thread of its own.

Awesome guys, feel free to keep discussing here or bust open your own thread - can't wait to see what you come up with. For that reason though, I'd like to keep all of our WIPs here (the 4 of us) just so that our group doesn't get mixed up with others and all of that. The thread might get bloated, but I'd like everyone to see the 4 progress simultaneously and rag on the ones falling behind Plus, the four of us would probably be commenting on each other's work...so rather than visit 4 threads, we'll just visit the one.
So, as I've said before, I'm not a great concept artist but wanted to scribble down some ideas I had for my character. I generally "make things up as I go" and feed off of my own momentum to try out new ideas and explore different options - which means a lot of the details aren't even thought out yet and will probably be made on the fly. A general, LOOSE idea that I'm currently going with is:
-Making Beefheart very broad and top heavy.
-Dreadlocks hairstyle, probably with some colourful ties or fabric twisted into the hair.
-Classic Ork style face and complextion.
-Fancy goggles, could be night vision or something like that, sitting on his forehead, over a bandana.
-Long sleeveless pirate captain jacket with an ill fitting vest and undershirt underneath. Most likely stained and missing buttons. I'm thinking of also having a logo on the back like a Hells Angels cutter showing Beefheart's crew emblem.
-Studded leather codpiece.
-Striped pants
-Padded chaps with a holstered side arm. Thinking this weapon would be similar to a bolter / short explosive round shootign gun. Like Beefheart, slow but packs a punch.
-Bandolier of explosive rounds looped through an epaulette.
-Similar boots but different shinguards / kneepads.
-Bracer on the right arm that could also have a secondary function as a place for "Crackers" to sit.
-Hook hand, but still not sure at all how to tackle that or make it interesting. I'd like to do more than just your classic Captain Hook style attachment and would like to justify having cybernetics there. Maybe something similar to Omega Red's ability? Maybe a grappling hook?
Definitely open to ideas / suggestions. Thanks again everyone for dropping in.
I had some friends who were really into shadowrun, they even ran a larp of it. With you guys being such talented artists I'm really looking forward to seeing how this turns out!

My concept skills suck balls! Went through about 5 sketches until I found a direction I was happy to go with, will develop a bit more..
The blade that shes holding in her hand will be able to be attached as a bayonette ( havent really sketched it yet... )
The gun has 2 firing modes, the extended barrel acts like a mini particle accelerator turning a normal projectile into a light speed velocity impact. Kind of like a rail gun of sorts. Flipping that part back in half just behind the tubes exposes a second firing method, which is similar to a sawn off shotgun. Her arm is visible, and there is a trigger mechanism in there but havent really cleaned up the concept enough to show it yet!
Might mess with her proportions a bit more... see how it goes!
Swiz: Cheers man! And, thanks for taking the initiative to post up that thread. Would be really cool to see other groups break off and do their own thing, though I'm not sure if that's what you intended, I just though it'd be cool if different people paired up - maybe even picked their own topics (SR might not appeal to all, i guess) and rolled with their own thread.
Haz: Wicked! She's looking dangerous so far - and should fit nicely in the palm of my guy's hand
but Troy, you know i love your girls but you are too much in the comfort zone with them, do a dude for christ sake, some guy in your portfolio would mix it up quite nicely and i'm sure you'll do great as well!
Slipgate: Yah, I'm thinking "everything" in that budget - Does that sound fair?
Yeah, don't get me wrong, 20k is still alot even for character+mount, but something must be sacrificed if I want to make, for example, a bike with round wheels, heh. Probably the face or boobs detalization. Anyway, I haven't really started yet, just exploring the opportunities.
some more sketching tonight, did a few more guns and clothes variants.. kinda feelin this one a bit more. way more scifi to it....but still not happy with the gun, probably another couple hours sketching to find the Gspot!
Shes going to have a little tech / backpack on like my noria reference from sevencore.... Need to loosen up and go nuts on it i think...
