Respectfully disagree with Kitteh, airsoft should only be a last resort for form detail you have no other reference for, they are not "99.9%" accurate. I know this is all bullshit gun nerd stuff but where I used to not spot airsoft, now all airsoft, even the high end stuff, always looks fake.
i don't like disagreeing with you, but surely you know that statement is a little extreme. it shouldn't be your primary reference (why use fake when real can easily be found?) but saying they all look fake is straight up false. the shapes are all there, and the original designers of the airsoft products are in the market of making things as realistic as possible, so i would assume that they must have put some effort into it.
airsoft designers tend to only change extremely minor things so they can fit the mechanism in. for example, when tokyo marui designed the electric M4, they had to widen the pistol grip by not even a centimeter to fit the motor in. it's been years since the original marui M4 design, and other brands like VFC have corrected differences like this by now anyway, so the only guns that have these minor shape differences are less expensive ones that are near direct copies of the original marui design. other than tiny adjustments like that, obviously the magazine and the working mechanisms will be different, but you have to be an idiot to not realize that...
...but then again, people are idiots, so maybe it's a fair statement?
The material reads especially, even on the high end airsoft, are still no substitution for the original article. Generally speaking the fidelity won't be missed, no, but as for me I have enough trouble getting detail right copying from proper reference--why spend so much time trying to nail a material exactly when your reference isn't quite the right material.
i completely agree about the materials though, since airsoft guns are made for cost efficiency rather than pure durability, but that's not to say that there are no airsoft guns with faithfully recreated materials. go check out the manufacturers VFC, inokatsu, and real sword, which all pride themselves on using the same construction methods as the real deal. hell, real sword even sources their bodies straight from norinco.
with all that said, i think the issue isn't with airsoft products, but rather trying to pinpoint what is and isn't airsoft in a quick google search. it's not hard if you look at the image url (is it from an airsoft site?) or the page it's on (does it say anything about it being airsoft?) but to someone new at observational skills, i can see the difficulty, but i don't think it's a fair statement to say "never use airsoft as reference."
just be glad we aren't using those "realistic" paintball guns as reference! :poly124:
@Pixelherder - bloody fantastic! Love those. Checking out your cghub thread, that's really incredible to see the animated GIFs of the WIP painting. Really inspiring.

Ya its a hatch shader but I don't use any post processing effects, I hand drew all the lines and use lerps to control their visiblity. I use r for the basic details that are seen at full brightness, g for the first layer of shading and b for the second.
heres my texture
hmmm looking at that picture, I think my normals are flipped on the shirt?
Finally got around to 'finishing' that kabal concept:
Very nice dude, I dig the WoW-style re-design. I was also looking at your CGhub folio recently, some really nice stuff you got, I may take a crack at doing one of them in 3D.
So, I'm new to this forum and also to gaming modeling. I was trying to make a very low poly character. It is clear that my inspiration came from the ninjas on Mortal Kombat. This is a screenshot from the viewport and this model was made on blender and the texture has the size of 1k and was made in photoshop. Hope u all enjoy.
very nice mezz, i wish more companies would continue to do good 2d animation, i tend to enjoy it more than 3d, but i guess 3d is cheaper and takes less time overall huh...
her reaching for the gun is still funky :P
It is probably in the way the arm is extended, the grab comes forth from bending her total body over and keeping the arm still in an angle.
I'm still working on this guy, still blocking out the bits and pieces before throwing them into Sculptris again for stuff like dents and possible scratches and a little smoothing on some edges. Still a long ways to go but I'm liking where it's going with the angular Mountain Goat theme I'm trying for.
Like Amsterdam said, get more references, it's very thin and a lot of shapes are off.
I don't think you have the profile for the grip at all. It should be more rounded on the front, and looks like it tapers a bit in the back. The thumb rest is more of a pipe shape.
Hi guys I'm back was doing some more promotion for Twentieth Century Fox so got round to making changes last night. Hope this is better, the last gun was way too thin before I know.
:Softened the edges on the grip
:Completely scrapped the old slide and made a new one
:removed the thumb grip (I will get round to it the marines at yesterday's event had an airsoft one so I took some snaps
Here are some views of the model and some snaps of yesterday's event :poly124:
Whoops the mag is coming through the model :poly124:
jeezuz Nick ! man i love your stuff. always such sweet shapes. ha ha maybe your industrial tech skills could provide that big guy a ride on leaf blower ?
Haha yeah, a leafblowing/landscaping vehicle would be pretty neat. Or even just a suped-up weed whacker/trimmer thing. I love all those cool silhouetted guys you're cranking out by the way!

Some classic spacemarine for starters followed by some empire greatsword for desert.
YUM
That stuff looks awesome! Is it all a post-process material?
Haha, I've moved onto Adventure Time now after finishing The Regular Show.
This comes to mind...

looking ace Rayph, i'm getting a real WOWish feel on the design but i think it would work great both in handpainted 3d and more realistic 3d.
small value study from earlier today

Just slowly working my way up the arm!
alright - calling this done
As for me, finally finished this animation I worked way too long on:

Next step: Redoing this same animation in the THIRD DIMENSION (dundundunnn) using the 3DSMax Biped.

well done mezz!

Also tested out basic renders in Max.

WTF? why the checker underneath?
any help would be appreciated
a diffuse and a normal. only that.
edit: the asphalt is a texture on a cube bsp, if that might help.
hmm soon,
will redo the handles, no worries.

other sketch from the weekend :
Josh_singh - Well, well, well. Lovely heads!
jramauri - Really like the proportions and the goofiness of his expression.
I'm thinking of making a buddy for my leafblower guy. Quick sculpt and paintover to see if it's worth continuing:
Some secondary characters for my Race For The Globe thingy:
Cheers,
Nick.
Still need to make the shell on this bad boy. Then I can start the low poly.
