Dado Almeida, Ravenslayer: Yeah, I tough that she looked similar with Kat when I was modeling, but it wasn't my direct intention. I think it's because they have similar features and style.
Working on some planet textures. The game engine is circa 2004, so we can't do anything fancy like EVE Online has done with their awesome planets. Clouds don't move, even. Lots of nasty DXT compression on the clouds, but it won't be facing the mission waypoint node in the final version, so it'll be better.
I actually made everything in this pic, including the starfields and Columbia.
I think that it would look better without normal map on the planet tbh. It would make sense, the planet would look generally flat unless its some really dramatic camera/sun angle like this one
Great stuff, Fletcher. Wish you hadn't mirrored him straight down the front though, maybe moving the seam a bit off to the side instead so the very middle has some uniqueness going on.
Finally getting back to some personal work now that I've settled in, easing in with some concepting.
Great silhouettes. Makes me want to play Mech Warrior.
So any tips on making this more feminine? and are the loops ok? some areas I wasn't really sure about, I have quite a few poles in there now. but then again, I don't know what i'll be using this for, maybe sculpt or maybe just leave it as is.
ps: i stole almighty_gir's foto reference to work on this :poly128:. (if it's not okay please tell me, but it looked like you got it from somewhere like 3d.sk or something)
pps: this is the first time I modeled such a high poly ear .
Hopefully if I can get past the normal map seam issues I'm currently faced with (I think plagued with would be a more fitting word since it's much less pleasant). I'm hoping to have this guy finished and hopefully rigged by the end of this week if I can work around those seam issues.
He currently weighs in at 5046 tris, I had him at 4999 at one point but he desperately needed more geometry in parts of his head/face, and a bit around his shoulders. I sort of set a budget for him, I didn't want him past 5000 tris originally but I'll settle for 46 extra tris. Oh, and the reference picture isn't going to be followed exactly, but the stitches will be in there for sure.
I assure you guys he won't look like Mickey Mouse when I'm done with him, hahaha. It's those damn ears. I really like them though, so I'd like to keep them there. Here's what I got so far.
Japhir: its super ancient, Painter3d, from MetaCreations. Its not projection like we know today, just straight up painting on the mesh. I used it as a way to view 3d models on my Mac, since i didnt have any 3d software, or the selection of 3d sofware for Mac os9 was very slim (and i couldnt figureout Lightwave). Its probably one of the most stable and easy to use ones - but has a few quirks and problems (such as not having projection painting, and odd ways of handling strokes across seams). They discontinued it when Corel bought MetaCreations I dont know if i still have the installer, even if i did OSx doesn't support Classic MacOS applications... so I'd have to break out my old G3 tower hahaha.
Re Painter3D : I have the PC installer somewhere, I can try to dig it out. The PC version seems nowhere near as good as the mac one tho - window size is limited to RAM, and the app (just like older painter6/7 releases) thinks you only have 256mb or something. The Painter patch/hack to go around that might work on it tho. Ill check it out...
Its funny to think that 3DSMax is catching up with that kind of workflow only ... this year hehe.
In terms of simplicity and ease of use I think Mudbox is the closest now (can do 3D paint, and export a flat screenshot to photoshop too)
Zac I LOVE that rendered thumbnail on the top right. Fantastic readability! Care to elaborate on the steps? Gonna try making a design just the same tonight. Inspiring!!!
Some may have seen this in the Technical Talk section. Its a simple singleplayer space RTS demo. It currently has 3 types of ships you can build, fighter with blasters, fighter with beam weapon, and 1 frigate with torpedoes.
Pior: Always makes the sexiest ladies!
Japhir: Sorry bud but...less than sexy. If you're planning on making her "hires" as you've said, how about showing us a subdivided shot? The sharp corners arent helping too much with her femininity at the moment.
Also: Zac wicked awesome thumbnails. You've gotta timelapse another of those for us!
I'm REALLY regretting not bringing my tablet with me to Istanbul....its kinda sucky here and I'd love to spend all the downtime I've got doing art.
Pior: Hey, thanks! Nothing fancy really. I started by poking around with the silhouette until I felt like it was establishing not only proportions but a sense of perspective. Then I locked transparent pixels and filled it with a darkish medium tone and started blocking in volumes. Used a mostly-sharp round brush for that, and I tend to use lighter tones to rough out new surfaces and dark tones for refinement. Then at the end I switched to a low-opacity large soft brush for a little burn and dodge to reinforce the overall lighting. I like to drop a Smart Sharpen in the process of saving out the JPG too.
Scooby: Thanks man! I'll give it a shot when I next work on them.
Great work always going on in here! Not much recent stuff to show. I'm working on a little project of my own, but I want to get a bunch of work done before I show it. Here are some studies I've been doing to keep things ticking over, trying to work on texture and colour a little more:
awesome job
thus you modelled it completely after your airsoftgun as the others just said, and forgot to change either the bullets in your clip or the brand name:thumbup:
Hello, Genero knife action here. I'm looking for some advice on how to handle these cuts; feedback is greatly appreciated.
I am trying to make the spine of the knife to retain the square shape in the first rung without the pinching so my normal map reads clean or does that matter?

this pinching nonesense is killing me softly. I want to make the spine of the knife to have this square shape sans the pinch:

Had a lot of fun with the profile, now need to try and do the same on the front view ... And ears are too high still ...
Quickly prepainted in Mud2011 (Diffuse values, Gloss and Spec)

Other than that it looks cool.

Fletcher: Get outta here! That's going straight in the awesome3Dshit folder.
Zackf: Please paint the first one, that silhouette looks great!

went through some old files last night and found this old guy. While im not working on it actively still, i did recut the video
So good!!
looks great. I would just fix the rorschach at the belly.
@MoP
Great shapes. Gotta love them nipples
AWESOME.

Good times!
What kind of gun is that? It looks exotic.
...
or twice, depending on the caliber.
DKK, you only say that because you love her cookie like Nipples :poly131:
Edit, Sorry for double posting.
Snipergen: Thanks man, in progress!
Here's an update, switched to designing with lines for easier revision:

I just wanted to throw an idea at you. What about implementing some sort of 3d grid. Kind of like so,
but of course better looking - really faint lines or something.
I don't know, just a random idea that came to mind while playing your demo
Like I said though, great progress, looking forward to more!!
Scooby: Thanks man! I'll give it a shot when I next work on them.
Heres what it looks like with the rest of the scene.

Your flippin it up!
Crazy ass stuff as always Racer!

Here is some girly alien. I'm actually pretty new to this Zed Brush.
