Hello everyone.
I am entering this contest solo:) My goal is to do EVERYTHING in zbrush...except the final composite. So...yes that means base meshes.
EDIT! I have since changed my mind...i will be doing most base meshes in 3dsmax
I am going to try to document as much of my technique as possible with tutorials that I will post on my site.
www.cgartist.tv
So...here is my basic idea for " End Game "
2 opposing factions ( not sure who or what they are ). One faction very vehicle based. The other faction will be fortress based. The idea is very Mad Max inspired. Both sides will be on the verge of destruction. Nuclear blasts will be going on in the background for both teams...signaling the end for each.
Here is the start of my concept stage. I am trying to frame my first screenshot. Forground is destroyed city with vehicles driving through it towards the fortress. In the background the imposing fortress sits blasting away...but even farther back...a nuclear explosion ripping through everything.
Good luck everyone. Go Game Wizards! Hopefully one of our teams can win this year again!

thats a sweet jump you got there
Yep...going solo.
Whose on your team? jay and kelvin? link me to your thread!
yah...gonna put a bunch of sweet jumps:)
TeriyakiStyle: Maybe...I love a challenge. I really want to do a TON of assets. Prove how fast zbrush can be. Case in point...my test below...1 hour to model and texture.
IT IS CRAP! and dosen't look like an actual car looks. This was just a test to see if my theory worked. Going to try to do some vehicles in it for real now and stick closer to the ref.
teriykistyle: Yes ZBRUSH! that is one of my biggest reasons for doing this challenge. I want do EVERYTHING zbrush..base meshes to. Even unwrap. I am going to use PUV for everything. I think it will be easier for my students to just get good at zbrush in the 3 years they are at school. I am head of the Art Insitute of Los Angeles.
Maltuna: Are you the great Micheal Altuna???
Divi: Hopefully today!
So this is my first car...totally done in zbrush. It went quite quickly using my method.
I unfortunately had to eyeball the concept. Zbrush 3.5 image plane plugin is not supported yet. So having a blue print in the background was not possible.
Hopefully I will have it painted by tonight.
Care to share your Zbrush sculpting method? Or is it a *secret*? lol.
I will be posting up movies of my process...just as soon as my technique is nailed down.
Ruben: yah...I have done tons of vehicles...but never a REAL car...like an existing car. I always just hated the idea of doing cause i know there are guys out there that dedicate there lives to it. I knew mine would just be sucky. But that is why I wanted to challenge myself to do some vehicles using zbrush.
Here is the latest update.
I ran into a rather critical bug though:( My HD geometry render has all this crazy noise in it. Some artifiact of using HD. I am hoping in the switch to R2 of 3.5 it will go away.
Anyone else run into it?
This is Cory Davis in case you don't recognize SN.
I'm about to join this thing soon too. Will be fun competing against the master.
In case you want to use image planes in the future- there's actually a way to set up image planes in zbrush 3.5/ I'm not sure if I remember all the details exactly. You take a cube and delete everything but two sides (say the front and back), separate those two as tools and set them up so that they're aligned in the center, one rotated 90 degrees. Applying the texture was the tricky part. I think I had to project it onto the uvs? I remember I had to divide my planes quite a bit (smoothing off) to get the textures to show up properly.
Organized: Finally someone who appreciates the craziness of that statement. Using zbrush is the only way i would want to do it. Thanks for the tip on image plane in zbrush. Will try it out!
Here is a bit more of fleshed out concept for the forground. Broke out the pencil and paper last night:)
Can't wait for the movies, Nick. Your movies were always extremely helpful.. I was trying to learn the retopo thing in zbrush the other day, but I got pretty lost.
I think everything looks great... and for all the years I've known you... I didn't know you draw. haha
Snefer: I actually agree with you. Today I switched back over to doing base meshes in 3dsmax. I was just having to tough of time doing little things. So YES...i am going to use 3dsmax for my bases...was just having to many hickups. I think it can be done but the speed is there like max...at least for me. I am sure some wiz can do it.
I guess i should edit my first post so people don't get confused.
Oreo: LOL...yes i draw. Retopo in zbrush is pretty nice.Try watching the movies on zbrush.com
So here is a wagon I made for me scene. You can see it in my concept in front of the toy store. I did it in about 45 mintutes...start to finish. It honestly only took me about 30 minutes to do it...the real bitch is compiling maps and getting it to look nice in 3dsmax. THe 30 minutes was spent getting all the painting and textured sculpting done.
Recorded a movie...will be posting it up:) on www.CGartist.tv
Well I figured it would be a good intro tutorial to my technique.
And...in the rules i beleive there is no object count restrictions...so i am going to get alot of mileage out of this baby:)
Split the video up?
Veoh...i am uploading them now;)
Here is a piece of paper for ground:)
I will tone down the spec. I usually don't worry about spec till i start putting the scene together
Adam: that is the max viewport. I just do a print screen on it. I will fix it once I get it into unreal. Or 3dsmax...not sure what i will use yet.
Crazyfingers. First off...love your post. Love the anchor. yah...i guess i could make it magazine...will just try to tone down spec. Thanks for advice.
In the meantime here are vids for my brick and wagon. Tutorials for how i did them:) Let me know what you think. Hopefully I don't fart in the middle of one of them
Brick:)

U competing? I wanna see ur stuff fool
Idk, since its Max Im guessin its because of the lighting strength and not the spec itself.
To Nick: Yea dat newspaper sure does look good. Damn I guess u love Zbrush
Here is about hour and half of work. Still don't have diffuse and normals generated. Will also need to grime them up some when I get back to my work computer. Using crappy laptop at home so I am very limited. Sticking to small stuff.
Used nothing but zbrush for base meshes. Used the new zspheres 2 for the tricycle:) was actually really surprised with the result.
If anyone is wondering why i am doing toys...well in my concept I have a blown out toy store in foreground.
turpedo: yah...monitor cracks are lame. I debated about going and making good alpha to sculpt them or using zbrush crappy standard cracks....laziness won out cause the monitor will be so small.
