Adam is a night person. While the rest of us are sleeping, he works. He has one part time job as a projectionist. See, a movie doesn't come all on one big reel. It comes on a few. So someone has to be there to switch the projectors at the exact moment that one reel ends and the next one begins. If you look for it, you can see these little dots come into the upper right-hand corner of the screen....

Anyone got their team set up yet? Myself and a friend from work are teaming up to rock the contest this year. Since we both wear them, we figured a great team name would be:
As the contest start draws closer, I realise more and more that I won't be able to keep out of it no matter how much coursework I'll have, so whatever I said a few days ago isn't relevant anymore. :P
Dunno about teams. I think it depends on what the theme is this year round. Last year, one could still manage alone, but if they want to put more emphasis on concept artists then I am not sure if it's as managable for one man.
What I am not sure about is what engine I'll use - if I participate of course.
The Source fanboi in me, though weak and quiet, is still alive. Thus I am thinking of doing a mad and hopeless entry as a tribute to Source.
On the other hand, I got UT3 a few days ago, and I've always wanted to experiment in it. Haven't had the time to do so, though.

Just a word of warning: The only lightmaps you'll see in Source are ones on brushes and displacements. All props are vertex lit and, therefore, prone to being ugly as hell unless you cheat in a hundred different ways. It'd be wiser to use something like Unreal because you can easily have sexy lightmaps on props... along with all the benefits of the material editor.
Source is also a royal bitch to work with and you can't use brushes anyway, so whatever.
I'm probably going to enter, but might have to either fly solo or join a group just for support (don't really know anyone though!) - if I pick up a job, deal with a move and have to bail then the impact would be minimal..
Some lovely screenies posted here. Makes me want to make more art

I am going to talk dirty to my mesh work.
Make love to my lighting.
And rape my textures. When they say 'No, don't do that'. I will respond with a slow & quiet 'Shh'.

your probably going to get a triangle count limit. I'm not really sure if it's possible to show the triangle count in source right now. I don't think brushes aren't allowed though, as long as you can show how much triangles they take up .
I'm fairly certain there's a way to show all rendered triangles.
Yep and I'm pretty sure you can count them. But you'll have to count several different ways since there are different types.
Another problem you run into is that brushes get divided up a few different ways. What could be two large tris in the editor could end up being 12, 24, 2000 tris after its compiled.
Surfa: last year it was "anything goes" on the rendering side, and I have a hard time believing they wont allow different styles or real-time shaders in a real-time art contest :P If you render it in cryengine 2 for example you will have SSAO by default, don't think they will force you to switch it off, that would be wierd :P

I mean, can you imagine pitching the idea to your mates to actually film a series of posturing dry-humping adventures with a fucking ottoman, then putting it on YouTube?
Yay, aesir, looks like tommorrow we'll see the news. I'm still pretty sure I'm out though, took too long and lost my partner, plus all my excitement is back in september.
I feel you a bit murdoc, but sometimes the trick is to just jump in and start some art. Excitement can build over time, think about why you ended up wanting to do the contest in the first place and build it back up.

Mmm. Yes.
Man I'm excited now.
your drugs.. can I haz them?
lol sarcasm meter, crushed.
I know that perfectly well.
But brushes are not allwed? wat?
That said, no idea if they're allowed or not.
Also models are lame all brush based entry here I come.
Edit: Also on the question front are we allowed to use custom shaders in the final entry stuff like SSAO or Cel-Shading etc..

Yay! looks like not having a girlfriend is a benefit for once.
DS Res? I'm going to own you bitches.
just make 2 really big alpha'd triangles and put 2 different images on them.

Seriously, who does that shit?

Wrong. Just....wrong.
Well that doesn't make any sense. If it started, what are you waiting for? :poly124:
Texture humping tutorial link fixed
I'm thinking it will take the description to get me going again, if I can get some ideas of it I'll probably do something small.
