Hey guy's here is an update to where I am at, well i am a little further but wanted to show some changes to the highpoly and the movie I rendered out if anyone was interested. I have the lowpoly done, and baked out and will be getting sheets here later today as I am trying to figure out color for him. Along with a pose, and what engine I want to render him in...sooo many choieces and decisions yet to make:P
Gav: Thanks for the feedback man, really appreciate it coming from you and awsome piece on yours as well
55joe: I wanted to push the door more, and after the competition I plan on embedding the door into his body, like he is the keeper of the souls, just ran out of time.
Xaltar: Hey man, thanks and I hope I can finish this guy out well.
Asmuel: Cool, glad that fixed the scale issue, Hahah I feel bad for them if they are without, but don't want him to be in porn:P
Woogity: Hey thanks! Yah I am trying to figure that out now.
Vahl: Hope this is what you were thinking more along the lines, I beefed up the door to help his balance, along with making it more imposing.
Mojo: Hahah good!
Akacg: Will do, and thanks for keeping an eye on this!
Coldkodiak: Hahah,, we will see.... I am stuck on the color ideas for him, and so far no luck on people tossing me ideas...my son wants to do a color for me....but hes 13 months so not sure if I trust it!:P Haha
Hey Jox, thanks for the reply as it helped in my thought process on the color for him. Here is where I think I will leave it, and will get to starting on the texturing for him, so any further feedback is always apprecaited!
Thats one bad ass color sketch Spark! I can't wait to see it on the model . If I had any kind of crit it would have to be that the top part of the flame kinda kills the feeling of the image a little bit. And I only say that because this looks so much better than just a color sketch, with a proper flame it could stand on its own as a great character illustration. But that can be taken care of later. Keep up the awesome work.
Very nice update. The weight, balance, and proportions of the character feel great now, which is something that can be so hard to achieve with the style of legs you're using. I also really like your color sketch - it reminds me of Diablo's art style. conte's blue/white version could also work well, but I guess it depends on how much you want to push the undead angle.
Hey guy's, glad to hear you are liking this direction and wanted to post a closer version that I see on my cintiq ( the one I posted feels to desaturated on other monitors ) Thanks again for all the comments, and I will be posting the lowpolly today.

Color Change:
AimBiz: Thanks for the comments, and I hope!
Nrek: K noted on the flame, once I figure out more of the type i want I will update the final sketch that I turn in.
Conte: Thanks my friend, I dig the blue sketch, though I think I want to keep it more on the warms this year, as I tend to go towards the cools. Preciate the input and help though:)
AdamLewis: Good to hear, as I was fighting alot of that during this war. Going non dead, though I agree that Conte's color sketch would be cool as well.
Rasmus: Thanks man, preciate you checking out my work.
Penrod: Thanks for that, yeah the door needed to change, though I will visit the highpoly for more tweaks after to push it even more.
Foreverrending: Will do friend, thanks for the input!
Belltann: Hahah, glad you like the details on the muscles, though I think you aren't giving yourself enough credit.
Slum: Yeah, ,I had some fun on this guy so I might break out the painting more.
one thing bothers me, the bottom of the door he is lugging around, seems like its missing a sort of 'step' (or at least the wear of one broken off) because right now it kind of looks like a random outline to the door instead of something it was built into, it may just be the back view though.
i'm curious, did you paint over the model? either way i love this sketch!
your color sketches are phenomenal. If it turns out anywhere near to what you painted, then holy crap! its going be sweet! Looking forward to seeing this finished! Very inspirational to see!
awesome colors. cant wait to see more. I kinda like contes tarantula version, some extra colors might be cool. kinda monitor lizard ish, or maybe war paint. dunno.
maybe instead of the ballz you could do the dinosaur "hump". if you know what I mean. just an idea, doesnt really matter.
Alright, I wanted to post up the lowpoly baked version of this guy. There are a few things I need to tweak on him, but will do that when I get him into his final pose. He came in at 10,000 polys, though I plan on reworking a few of that number around after the pose as well. Thanks for all the comments guy's, as that has helped me alot in thinking about this year's piece.

Lopoly:
JFletcher: Hey, noted on the bottom of the doorway, I tried reworking some things to make the door more imposing, but didn't really think enough about it. I plan on fixing that after the war, I had a 3d shot of my character that I had as an overlay when I buildt up my painting, it is in the painting some at an overlay of 25%.
Rollin: Hahah, I will try man, I will try!
Mikezoo: Hope I do the painting justice, and glad you liked the color.
NuclearWarrior: Glad to hear it, and hopefully I make it.
Asmuel: Hahah I will see, yeah I am debating about bringing some more colors on the back, so we will see.
Blaizer: Yah, I can't tell who is seeing what, as monitors can play so much into color. But I won't be going to saturated, somewhere inbetween them.
great model, incredibly badass. Only comment I have on the color scheme is that his face is kind of getting lost. The viewers eyes go straight down to his body where there is more saturation and higher contrast in the shapes, which is a shame, cause his face is well designed. I would consider splashing an accent color somewhere on the face or bringing out the blue in the horns a little more. Gorgeous work, very impressed!
great job man, very well done, you know its good when you dont see any poly edges in your model. i agree, rwakstars paintover is nice, but a tad heavy on the blacks.
i have one very important comment
FINISHHHHHH WOOOOOOOOOOOOO
r
The cast is lookin' pretty good Spark. Can't wait to see the unwrap and texture process. I think a cool tone for the skin will contrast his "hot" nature pretty well.
Just wanted to show where I was at with this guy, before I headed home tonight. Have the pose somewhat figured out and am about 50% done with the diffuse and almost done with the base. Alot of this is wip but if you have any comments and critiques, please do not hesitate to let me know:)
Looks pretty freaking sexy so far Spark. I really like the pose, it adds a lot to the character. But The combo of this pose and the camera angle really makes things hard to distinguish on him. That Right hand just seems to cover up so much of his body. Maybe dropping the hand a bit or raising the camera angle could help with the readability of it. Keep it up .
Delicious work man! My advice would be maybe render it in a 3d package, im not sure maomset toolbag has omnis in it but a 3 point light setup would bring out the volumes out of this awesome sculpt. We need to see some spec on those black spike/legs coming from his back.
For the beauty screen, you could do shot a shot of the portal activated and crazy stuff flying out the door on his back. Right now im not sure what hes doing with his hand, I could look like the green fire is coming from there, maybe just a different angle would correct that.
Best wishes for the last steps, this beast is Godly. Killer work.
The colours look hot, but pose is losing it a bit for me.
If you made your mesh completely a self illuminated flat colour, it would be difficult to tell from the silhouette what limb was what.
I'd highly suggest asking an animator to coach you through nailing the balance and weight shift in the character. It really dosen't look like the hind legs can hold that character upright like that, especially with all that additional mass he's carrying on his back.
I love that camera angle though, but I really loved all that work you did on the neck/chest area. I agree with Nrek, move the hand to stop obscuring that part. It's one of the best parts of your model.
Imo a standing pose would be much better with his arms up like he's about to cast a spell or something, giving a feeling of power. Would show off all the fine parts on him as well.
If you heven't done any certain settings in marmoset or something I'd suggest amplifying your normalmap since it doesn't show very well right now.
Good luck! It will still be most exciting to see what's coming next.
Anoter day gone, and a bit more progress on this piece. I am cleaning up the diffuse and tweaking a few things here and there, along with finishing the base that he will be on. I have one render within Marmoset, and 2 others that is from Max though not as good as I want the lighting on them yet ( rendering isn't somethign I understand ) Hope you like it, and thanks for the comments, they really help.

Sa74n: Yeah, the low turned out better than I was hoping for, so I hope the texture can sustain the detail.
Konstruct: Haha, had to learn how to use every poly when doign RTS games...alpha for the win!
Woogity: Yeah the tounges create the fire and control the magic. Thanks!
StefanH: Glad to hear I am winning you over:)
Shilbert: Thanks friend:) And going with that direction, just changing a few things.
AimBiz: Will do!
Meshiah: Hahah I will try, soooo close I think I will make it.
Mr Masri: I tempted a cooler paint, but wanted to go warmer this year as I fall back on that alot.

Xaltar: Hahah, nice description:P
Nrek: Camera angle is something I have to play with for sure, and try to get the hand out of the face area. Thanks for the inout.
Rory_M: Updated shots have the final pedastal
Wizo: I wish I knew how to render better, as everytime I try I seem to fail. Spec map is still in the works, and the door will have something I hope coming from it.
Jox: I was hoping the door would be the counter balance, though I will take a look at the pose more when the texture work is complete. And I will try to emphazise the neck region more as well.
Aimbiz: I was planning on trying something more to that direction for the construcion shots, and have this as the bueaty. I will try doubling my normals to help in marmoset to push them, or try another shader
Mrrogers: Heh, it is under 10,000 tris...thanks for the concern and post. I sometimes just say polys to both:)
right now it sorta looks like hes holding an invisible basketball. you could try it slight more palm up, and the fingers slightly more curled. or you could try it pointing.
you may want to screw around with perspecitve settings if you are going to do an upshot like the top one to help convey the scale. also with the torso at that angle the sexy details there are lost, so you might want to think about tweaking it, though that will be hard if you want to keep the pose.
first shot, IMO has the best colors, but dude, work on your specmap as you go, you'll get better results, faster, it really screams for a good specmap !!

I'd go for a really bright reptilian green or red, with a subtle reptilian pattern on the back (like a skake, or gecko).
Then a more blatantly obvious spotted pattern along the back and arms (where the sun would hit it/hair would grow).
Then for the areas the sun wouldnt hit (more tender areas), make it a pale yellow, with gross blueish-teal veins, and liver spots).
Then then then... do something to really make the door stand out. Some kind of lighter cooler Complimentary colour!
(i'd do a paintover, but god i'm still struggling with my diffuse).
The hooves look kickass!
ohhh, another thing you could really play around with, is giving him some maori style tattoos.

i love how the lowpoly model doesnt obviously look like game art. the definition of details and shapes is just right
can't wait to see the textured version

my favorite entry in the competition HANDS DOWN.Everything is perfect.
MOAR CLOSeUPS PLIZ!

I love how put the skeleton in the final base, the scale of this sob really makes him demonish as hell.

the skeleton is a nice touch.
