as soon as i saw the word "demon" I knew you would enter. Damn fine thumbnails you have so far. I can't believe you are already in zbrush! pace yourself...for our sake
Nice little touch there with the horns coming out of his eyes! ha! Really nice! I really like all thumbnails tho, 44, 54 and 60 were my favs.
Interesting how you craft out different heads to play around with the design. Now, couple of questions. Are you using zpheres? Or did you make a base mesh? Also, what brushes doe you usually use?
Hey guy's, wow alot of people entering this year! Going to be intense as hell, here are a few more concepts that I have done ( a friend showed me a trick combining thumbs together to see what you come up with, helps explore your ideas more ) AlthoughI had a few that I thought had a shot, I decided to go with some of the direction that I found doing the zbrush studies. I will be having the horns coming out of the eye sockets, as I think it adds a touch to him that pushes him closer to evil. He will be a Demon Lord that is stopping any of those trying to escape hell, so I will have him in a scene that will show more of the story. Hope you like the direction, and any further crits and coments are always apprecaited.

Conte: Thanks, and yours is coming along great btw.
Jackwhat: Yah, I will need to make sure that he looks good from all angles.
Diwan:Hehe, yeah to many people are saying so, so I will try some more variations.
`AustiN: Thankyou for the kind words, I will try!
Oglu: Glad you liked them:)
[MILES]: Thanks, I think I have decided to go more with this direction, as 42 was to close to what I did last year.
MDSchee: Thanks, the 3d heads were like 15 minutes each, just using zspheres to figure things out.
Knucklebear: Haha thanks Knuckle, I still feel I need to move faster, as time goes by to quick in these competitions.
Xaltar: I waas thinking of more fleshy teeth like spider mandibles for the bottom row, havent figured out in detail yet if that would work.
Fightpunch: Will play around with that more for sure, loving your concept Fight! Keep up the great work.
Morte: Thankyou:)
Vahl: Hahah good to hear you like them my friend.
Indian_Boy: Thanks man, hope you like the piece as I go along
Sir Gimp: Thanks, yeah changes him up a bit.
Killingpeople: Thanks KP, preciate you stopping by, now where is your entry!, I hope you are doing it this year.
Monkeyboy_Garth: Preciate it!

Red_Republik: Hey. good to see you on here man, and yeah had to enter when I heard that, felt like I would be kicking myself if I didn't. Thanks for the kind words, coming from you that means alot, and I need to get an early head start, so I don't die at the end:) Join our side Jeff, as were going to take it this year:)
Snefer: Haha, bone eyes FTW for sure!
Raul: Thanks for the comments Raul, I used zspheres to get the idea down and see what it would look like in 3d, I was just using the basic standard and clay brush for those.
Hell yes! Those skull tentacles were one of my favorite parts of your DW3 piece, definitely fun to see them return as horn caps. Really cool round of silhouettes there, I think I like 81/84 best. Some badass options among your pencil sketches also, I'm leaning towards the first thumb of the pencil section, as well as the one near the bottom left. As for your sculpts, those are great, especially like the way the eyes are covered in the 2nd one.. although I have to agree the jaw line looks a bit generic in that one. Awesome work man, can't wait to see more!
Agred on 81, very intersting shape, I think that with the shoulder arms and dangling bodies form 86 could work well together, or even have them hanging to the back instead of the sides.
Those skull horns are a must. I would try to stay away from horse/goatish legs, I'm trying to do the same myself, they've been done so much. The ones you drew at the bottom of the last sheet aren't bad though.
Hope you dont mind i threw a few of my favourite bits from your concepts together, if you were considering going with the puppet theme you could consider having a much larger version similar in proportion to the puppet being controlled.
Keep up the great work
I have to say even though this was not in your list of concepts - this is something you should do - especially after I saw your last years entry.....you rock!!!
haha, bret at it again! #84's head gear silhouette is rad. the top 3 heads sketches under the silhouettes are great too, the first one is my fav, might bring the skull parts down more though, so they aren't so parallel with the head. rockin stuff man.
Ok, well I thought I would show some of what I did over the Massive Black demo, where I got a chance to work on this some ( although I lost a good amount of work...zbrush file corruption:( ) But hopefully you guy's like the direction, or if you have any ideas I would love to hear them. Thanks again for checking out my work, and taking the time to give comments!

Mongrelman: 81 would have been what I would have gone with, it was close!

Spacemonkey: Tim, thanks man I appreciate that, and loving your piece as well, really glad you are doing it again this year.
Muppetman: Hahah yeah machines were sooo close:P Here is some more sculpts, so let me know what you think!
Not realy feeling that head color though; realize its probably an early conceptualization, but the colors aren't working to the shapes and forms of it very well, just feels like some random blobs (which it very well may be and im just a buttface).
- the skulls ontop of the horns.. i duno, something more sharp and agressive would suit him better
- the body feels really cylindrical and boring to be honost
it might be because of the long torso, or overall proportions, it doesnt match with head i think.. or it doesnt show that much agressive energy like the head does. bigger shoulder area? beef up the upperlegs?
- the colors dont add something for my feeling, they rather take something away, i dont know why.
i agree with rens -- maybe flip the skull / spines around so the tailbone as at the front instead of the skull? maybe use some sort of real vibrant accent color or something on the head so there is a focal point? Super badass ... he's totally a relative of DW3's.
Shit thats a nice head bust. Think the body will work well when you put the gear on him. Can agree with rensand r4ptur3 that the skulls seems missplaced. Maybe incorperate the spine design into the horn its laying on? or maybe add something off this into the horns ( http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Tyranids/Malenthrope/mal2.jpg ). The texturing works but it will hide so much of that lovley sculpting. Maybe do a more even tone? Just my 2 pennys worth.
Hey man got some cool stuff going here! I do have a few things that kind of bother me though. Some of the proportions are odd. If feels like his legs would have trouble supporting his body due to them being to short or his upper body being too big. Also the pose is not really helping right now. Looking at the way the two characters a positioned it feels like the fight could go anyway. It would be cool to have the main guy be taller like he is beating down the worm creature. Another thing that I noticed is if this guy the bones on his horns really don't flow with the design. This my be because you haven't integrated them in but if they are going to be armor it doesn't make a whole lot of since putting armor on horns. Other then that you have some really cool things working for you.
Wow, this thread is incredible, i love how you work through your ideas. The current sculpt looks astounding, but i agree with the others the spine/skulls aren't needed, but I'd love to know how they're made :P, they're beautifully done.
Dang man I think that the horns out of the eye thing really worked out. The pose is also very interesting man. I like it. I cant wait to see it all come together.
Brett! U need to learn how to model first n tey again next year!....lol jk
Wow man! I wish I had been at ur demo. That stuff looks insane!
Tho I got some questions for ya. Maybe I'm an idiot. Or maybe I'm too tired.that I missed th y of the previous But what the heck is that cobra like creature n ur demon doing? They look like they r practicing some kind of kinky hellish tango or somethin. That thing looks really interesting! Tho the poses...I dunoo they need more work.
I really like what u did with the head! I'm also diggin the body is all really neat stuff. Tho seems like the body needs more. I know u still have things to add. Maybe that's what it is. It looks naked still. Which brings me to my next point. Since ue demon is pennisless u should add a set of arms or hands that cpver that area. Just a suggestion. That's all.
hey brett. i was in the middle of typing out a detailed critique, and then i saw Foreverendering's paintover, and it basically says it all. You have some great stuff to work with, now it is just time to tweak proportions before moving forward with more detail. rock on!
Hey Brett, I think you definitely have some interesting elements in the head. (very Doom-like ;)I agree with Jeremy and really like the paintover he did. I think you may have jumped into the detailing too quickly without nailing down a solid silhouette. Also, it might help if you model this guy in a relaxed pose where the feet aren't pointed perfectly straight ahead, similar to what Jeremy illustrated. It will help make him feel heavier. Don't make the mistake I made and sculpt all kinds of detail that you will just cover up with armor and gear. (I wasted so much time doing that last time.) Plan it out a bit more in your sketches and get all your low poly stuff done first. That's all I got. Hope that helps, mayn.
Your ideas are really cool, but maybe the detail is getting more love than the overall shape. Just need to maybe push and pull some proportions. Great stuff though. Looking forward to the update.
Hey Brett, That head is the winner. If you can get the same kind of awesomeness out of the body this would be golden.
I have to agree with Jeremy and Muppet man etc. The tertiary details are beautiful but the primary forms and proportions could use work (in the body).
I think the chest might look better if its stretched vertically, because your eyes settle on the upper set of pecs when looking at the head, which are small and make his body seem a bit feeble.
No worries if you disagree with my advice, just trying to help.
ok, so im gonna just sit over your shoulder some more...but "online" . hehe. awesome getting to watch you work this weekend. im starting up a new model at work on monday so i get to try and decifer all of my notes and see if i cant put them to good use.
i was hoping to hang out with you guys more on the last day but i got swept up into a hackysack circle and lost track of everything :P
After seeing that the direction I was going wasn't that well recepted:) I went back to the drawing board and worked on the concepts a bit more. I kept the head which I think was in a good direction, and did a few thoughts on fleshing out the body to match more towards the head. Here are the new concepts, and as always, any crits and comments are always apprecaited.

Looks cool! So much detail and still very readable. That hoop around his neck would make a great greentooth pelt. Have you thought about the colors for this guy?
