Like I promised, here's another update. I've been working on the background colors and the face. I haven't got a clue how to name my general yet though. Some of the entries are so menacing for me. lol. I really like Snowflys work and I think the pose of Loch's painting looks cool.
Thanks for the comments everyone. I went back to brush up some features
and already stared on the color piece. Hopefully I'll get the final piece done soon. :P
yunsama: Why is there glass sticking through her head? She doesn't look very leader like. Very child like honestly except for the large breast sticking out.
sheesh coldkodiak, thanks for that post! i'm really glad you're posting on these boards.
and peppi, good to see your entry finally. thanks for the brushes!
here's an update, a late game attempt at salvaging the composition, but i dunno...it feels like a lost cause.
no paint yet at this point, just push/pull via liquify. i have a lot of readjusting to do...
Gonna try to wrap up the characters soon so I can work on the BG, frame, and color balancing.
I think my biggest problem is that most of my work has been black and white, and mostly line-based. So taking it further to color and form is still a little alien to me. But that's why I jumped on into it on this mini-comp. I'm determined to get my skills up.
GCMP: You work really incrementally. You should sit yourself down, and knock out as much as possible as quickly as possible as you can when you're designing your character. Make variations on different layers, and don't feel constrained about keeping things clean, just... feel your way through it,
snow: Don't be afraid to go in with a hard brush and really start defining stuff. Just pick one of those standard photoshop hard edged brushes or something like it, turn the opacity jitter to be controlled by pen pressure (other dynamics) and really define shapes and edges.

forgive me if its not cool to paint over.
It's really coming along though, very much the coolness.
xysdf: so much potential for classic cool. You need to finish.
wicked-j: I suggest trying to block in the rest of the body before applying clothing or decorations. It's easier to drape things that way. Keep going !
Not much to say on mine. Doing both 3d and 2d is a bit crazy, but thankfully I have lots of freetime.
paint this tomorrow. Getting down to the line, eek! (the cat).
Some really awesome work in here, big fan of how Xysdf's is coming along, love your style. I'm also diggin Doc_Robs, i love the stylisation, cant wait to see what you do with the grenades ;p, snowfly and Peppi, those are looking amazing too.
Wells, I've been lurking for a long time around all the communities, and this year I wanna take part in the dominance war, since I lurk around here the most, I'll be joining PC, and cuz i love the place, its taught me so much
anyhows, here's the wips of my general, when I heard "Green and black" I couldn't get the image of Sharpe out of my head, but i've spiced it up a little, this my first concept in Corel painter, normally I use photoshop, but I really wanted a painting feel to this, it ended up feeling a bit characaturish though ;p, not my usual style
before you go crazy in changes, know that there's nothing really wrong with your original composition, imo it works well. Has a melancholy sadist feel to it. You've probably just been staring at it too long.
-is doing something pretty damn cool with the straight on composition himself. You should instead look at lighting solutions, and FX solutions to really push the painting and sell it.
But it is your call, and if you feel you're trying to do something different, well then you do what you must.
Ok put in a lot of time, re proportioned and repainted the head and hair, as well as modified the overall proportions. Moved the sword arm around a bit but I'm still not terribly happy with it. Grounded the painting a bit more with the background and started adding some detail back in. I'm actually starting to think I'll finish it... whee!
Eventide - This is starting to come along. The arm position is better, but I feel you may not be happy with it because, for what is supposed to be a strong pose, the arm seems unenthusiastic. The left arm looks better because it is confidently away from the body, looking strong. I know it's a bit late to change it now, but try to pose what you want yourself, and see where your arm naturally goes. (Hint: Think 'strong!' in your head)
Ok, so it is a female. I wasn't sure until now because, except for the face, everything looks masculine. Unless you really want to go for the androgenous look, try adding some feminine touches, or maybe give the armour a bit of a curve? Once again, I realize this is a little late to change a lot... Oh, and the eye whites are too bright. Add a mid-grey tone shading to them.
Otherwise, keep it up! And also, I highly suggest referencing some real armour for finishing details.
Snowfly - Amazing! I love how it's coming out. But I wonder if the piece would look stronger if he was facing the other direction from his pet? Just the feeling I get.
doc_rob - Really cool, love the melting look!
coldkodiak - This looks soooo cool. I love the concept, love her look, love the killer teddy bear army, love it! Can't wait to see it with colours.
xysdf - That face reflection is totally selling the piece. And I really love the pose. Hmm, I wonder if you could get a reflection of someone in there? Maybe the 'artist', or someone looking... fearful?
NuclearTes - Very fun and cute piece. It's a nice contrast to a lot of other stuff here For a name, I'm thinking something really fantasy-like, and with lots of weird letters like 'y' and 'x' and such :P
funshark - Nice piece, every time I see it I think of the judges in Final Fantasy 12. Looking good, can't wait to see more.
Oooook, and now my update. Sorta.
Did some work on the hair, ropes, and clothing.
At this point... I really kinda hate the piece. The only thing keeping me at all motivated to finish this damn thing is because I was set on getting it done to enter the mini-competition with. But I'm struggling to finish it... and not sure if I even want to anymore...
The ONLY thing I like about her now are the eyes. Which is a good spot to like, but unfortunately not quite enough.
If someone can suggest something to sorta 're-motivate' me to get her done, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise... dunno how much further I'll go.

Thanks again for the suggestions Mezz. I suppose I could have explained that I was going for a "Joan of Arc" type feel, though maybe I'll see about unandrogenizing her a bit more... every once in a while I get on a psuedo realism kick and shun the more skimpy sexy armor for something more functional. That's one lovely lady you've got going there by the way
awesome entries, guys!
snowfly, i really like yours one, i think you could use mix of your variants- just place newhead of your general to old pic, i think should work.
Lucas, that painting is really good, also i like the bombs under the eagle's wings.
wicked-j: I suggest trying to block in the rest of the body before applying clothing or decorations. It's easier to drape things that way. Keep going !
coldkodiak: You're right. Sometimes I just want to get going and start drawing, so I end up adding clothes and drapery first, it really burns out valuable time. It's a habit I'm slowly suffocating. Die habit DIEEEEEE! Thanks!
Ok, here's another update. I know the update is sloppy and unbearable to look at but I needed to just throw out an over all idea of my background and pose. I should have done this a couple days ago... My mistake. So before I get slapped with a shit load of complaints about my sloppy sketch just know it's a quick idea and I have every intention to fix it 150%
Arm/hand positions, chest armor, drapery and background will be changed... Neck area needs tweaking as well.

Ok, Joan of Arc, I get it And by more feminine, I didn't mean more scantily clad! She can be just as covered as she is now, but bring a curve in at the wasit, and some engraved details into the armour ("flowery", perhaps?) and it will read more as a female.
And I'm just noticing now, the flag behind her is a bit plain... why not try giving it a big smily greentooth?
Hey Doc_Rob, don't you have to include your name, contact and generals name etc. in the final before you send it in? I didn't see it in your final post.
thanks coldkodiak, mezz, and shotgun especially. your crits/paintovers were all spot on. some fine tuning left to do, but it feels like the worst is over!
After accidentally saving a small sized file over a large one, and a lot of repair to the pixelated mess... here's my latest WIP, reversed to rest my eyes and check for issues. Looks like I will need to do a little plastic surgery to make the front teeth align with the molars.
Alright here's another update with two different sizes. I wanted to go with a full body shot but I think it'll be a better idea to do a half body pose. At this point in time since the days are running down and I haven't started to paint yet, going with a half shot will save time and give me better definition and chances to submit a final.
HOLY F*$@ COLD KODIAK!!
that shit is titts,, speaking of which is on of those bears getting down on one? and it also looks like another one has a pair for eyes :P

today i wanted to see some color on the general and played a bit with composition, still lots to do, color is not my best friend by now...
I got inspired to start something myself. Got some silly ideas down, I think I'm gonna continue with the hot fat lady.

xysdf - awesome design. I love the helmet.
coldkodiak - cauliflower ear, but the lighting isn't so hot. Yours is looking great, it's really dynamic.
Great lighting work, as I said before. =]
Keep it coming. Looking forward to see how it turns out. =O

just a quickie, see if I can knock it out in time...
update?
Rens, it's heading down a much stronger path now. kill it!
snow. you kick ass. make me happy.
That's really sweet, I'm glad you went in the direction you did.
Restarted my undead dude, not too hot yet, needs more cool!
