ah I see what you mean Rens and Nrek, I will draw on overlay of some raw anatomy to figure out what I can do as I think you guys pushed it a little too far and made him skinny when I want him to look fairly solid.
Hey Ged I like what you have done your character but I agree with Rens that there are just some things about his proportions that are strange. He seems to be very wide in comparison to his head, and he also dosn't seem to have a neck. I tried to do a basic paint over to maybe show you a slightly altered body structure. I squased the body inwards a bit. raised and enlarged the head, added some neck, and lowered the shoulder pad on the left to break the silhouet from merging with the collar. Hope this helps a bit.
All you've done is make him look younger, not good for a generals portrait.
ok, tossed his "raven" clasps on his cloak, did some noodling and color adjusting. think im good for the night. toss up some comments, love to hear what people think. where it should go, what it needs, how it makes them feel before they go to sleep.
i agree with hawken on that piece, the character looks way too young to be a general now. before he had some beef behind him, now he looks kind of scrawny and green. think of all the wars he has been through, grizzle him up a little. that and the sword, lower it down a bit, seems awkward to grab that. make the handle more ornate, this is the sword that commands an army, it is most likely something that is passed down with great legacy, or earned, make that sword one of the symbols of why people listen to him on the battlefield
Ok, just like I said, I was more or less starting this one over--same idea, new file. Right now I am muuuuuch happier with this ol' gal. Still needs a ton or work still, of course.
HOWEVER, right now, I can't help but feel something seems a little lacking. Like there's some kind of detail that she should have, or something needs to be added.
I don't know what, and maybe it's just I need to get more solid parts going on, but any ideas would be helpful. Please, bring on more C & C!
P.S. Lots of great stuff in here, keep it up all!!
Keep painting new layers on it, it has too much space between strokes that makes it look weird. use some big strokes at 45% and try to clean it up. Maybe some harder edges under the hat. Just keep going, its alot better!
maybe change the hat a bit, the left side looks heavy.
and try to use the liquify tool to make some anatomical corrections here and there.
man this is looking awesome. some super stuff sketched by all!
wanted to get a few quick ones in to get the creative juices going. looking forward to this! fight the good fight! fight for the gray and green!
1. a thick and toothy worm type general witch a dashing hat.
2. a battle scarred insectoid general with some sort of vapor addiction
3. a centipede type general with a nice set of antennae
I like the third design of Jouste very much. I think it's a very nice alien. I made an alien female war general as a practise, because it's not a very strong area of mine. I really like Richkids painting to.
I heard about the DW contest at my workplace and decided to give it a go. I haven't been drawing for ages, so don't expect too much from me ^^. Let's get cracking then.
So here's the sketch of my War General 'Balmung'
I based her design on a ditched character I had in my sketchbook ages ago, time for a comeback I say!
I'd really appreciate it if you guys can give me feedback and comments on my general! Until next time then! Thank you all!
hey max, that looks like it coudl be a really cool piece. very brutal kind of post apocalyptic looking so far. my only crit at this stage is...is that his arm across his chest? if so you might want to strike that pose in the mirror and do some studies. but, if it is just a dope strap than that is pretty gnarly looking.
jouste- hahah, i love the little hat and hairy arms in the first rancor guy. the third one though is SWEET. at first i wasnt all that sold, then i saw the little arms going down his chest and i think that could really sell the character. awesome line up of choices there
jouste--all three very cool, but I think I'm most partial to the second one. Because of that vapor-addiction Haha, good fun!
Thanks Rens, I'll give all that a try! That hat for some reason keeps giving me issues... I kept looking at my reference for it, even overlaying it right on--and yet someting about it still bugs me. But I'll try to work that out :P
I can use the liquify tool, but for what sort of anatomy? Which parts are sticking out as 'wrong'?
Hello everyone,
there are my first sketches.
I first thought of a warrior sitting on his huge head opponent's. But now he is just sitting on... whatever, waiting more from me .
But i'm still searching... heading toward some samourai spirit.
Draw in a skull, with lines going down the middle and at eye level ect.
Create a grid that goes around that skullshape and see where you're nose is at, how the eyes stand compared to those lines.
I had the same problems some steps ago. The shapes are there, but they are not in line.
Use the liquify tool, and move those pieces around, not by 5 pixels, but realy move, and see wich way you want to go. After that, you start doing it with more care so it doesnt get all blurry and weird.
Start with the nose, take the left nostral in the picture, and make it smaller. the middle piece is bend to the left, the highlight ontop of the nose makes it look like its realy misshaped.
Play around with just those couple elements and see that if you move things just a little, it gains a totaly different look.
also the V shape in the upperlip, almost looks like the lip is cut in. See if you can make those shapes a bit rounder, specialy for a bigger woman round looks are good :P
For the hat issue, take a look at how the contrast is in the reference. The hat you have right now is pretty much one color. adding those darks and lights gives it alot more feeling. All those things can really mess with your mind. While the outlines are good, the way its rendered can make it feel totaly wrong!
richkid - ghostfaced killer gets better and better with every post good job on the scar
jouste - neat stuff! i'm liking 3.
ged - maybe give the face rendering some more attention. i feel overall it's too loose for a portrait. my first impressions are his eyes are too contrasty, and the scowl looks like it's falling when actual scowls are more of pushing the mouth/jaw upwards.
just cleaning up my main forms, gonna think about extra costuming bits and bobs next.
Crap, I had to go to Payson, AZ this weekend so I'm behind schedule. I'm still competing in this though. Here's a start just to get going. Apologies if my rough concept is an eye sore at the moment. Hopefully in the next 1 or 2 days I'll be caught up with the rest of you.
Ged - here's my go at liquify with your last update
mostly just trying to zero in on his overall form, as the details don't feel like they're sitting on any underlying structure.
also beefed him up like a general, scaled down the head just a tad. hope it didn't stray too far from the feeling you wanted to get across.
another thing i touched up was the overall composition. i felt he was leaning backwards a little and pushing himself backwards with his extended leg. also i bumped down the contrast outside the bust/face area to bring the focus back to his face.
my paintover's wonky but i hope it helps...
also i would try to bring up the lighter blue in the BG to frame his head instead of torso.
i do like your color choice and lighting scheme though, it's very imposing without looking too contrived. i demand to know, why is he flying game artisan's colors??
Heres an update. I redid the pose and am trying to walrus's painting technique, let me know how it is looking. The energy cloud is definitley a work in progress, it looked way cooler in my head haha.
oh man, loch, thats sick. that has a really cool mood, kind of creepy with the mask
snowfly, oh man, each post gets cooler and cooler with that thing. really solid piece
wicked, that is a really fun head shape. the face looks a little more mopey than stoic though. he is a general, make him proud or angry. you are on polycount...make him angry. cant wait for an update on him
well keen, if you are staying with your bro, wanna meet up tomorrow at the gypsy den for a little portrait painting session? i dont know if either of you have a laptop. i need to do a lot of pencil work for class, so if you dont you could use mine while i doodle on paper.
Hi everybody, I'm new around here, but I want to give this challenge a go. I've used photoshop plenty but never to paint any of my drawings, so any tips, critiques, help etc. is more than welcome. Here is the base sketch I whipped up.
Wip 1 from me. Decided for a scene with a wider scope since the final submission res is gonna be huge anyway. Designs not final, but layout is pretty much where I'm heading. Might include background units to give the general's victory pose more meaning.
Magic sugar if you are going to do a scene like this I would suggest using an upshot and making the fallen mech be the foreground the legs of the generals mech leading the eye up to him. This will bring focus to your peice and make it easier to spot the general:)
Ooook, no update from me today. Let's just say... not my most artistic day. I hope to have an update for tomorrow though.
Instead I will just bother people with my comments
MagicSugar - I agree with Loch, a more dynamic angle would really do a lot for this image. Very cool idea otherwise
Eventide - Not a lot of time to pick up photoshop painting (we've got about a week now left, right?) But here's the first steps: Work in lots of layers, and use different brush opacities.
As for the drawing, looks cool so far. Make sure to get good reference for armour. Also, foreshortening looks awkward at the best of times. Avoid weird front on angles whenever possible. Basically, find a better position for his (I think it's a 'his'?) right arm. Try moving it above his head or to the side.
Loch - Really like how she's looking, very cool concept
Snowfly - That's looking so amazing. Can't wait to see the final result.
@rens- hear hear! blow harder on that shell and get those guys going in on this! (understandable if they are super busy :{)
@snowfly- love the composition great stuff. @magicsugar-loch has got a good suggestion for your piece. i'd second maybe checking out another perspective.
so i took some feedback from all you wicked poly counters and just started mashing my 3 ideas together. i came to the conclusion that a general addicted to a vapor of some kind was a good idea. so i made it a blood vapor to make it an even better idea, then i made it the blood of his enemies to make it an awesome idea.
so here is finneadius the high war general, taking a well deserved load off. a sketchy pass to get some ideas and a bit of color together and play around with some atmosphere.
Loch, i think the 3rd img is way to dark, maybe somewhat between 2 and 3, or just the lighting from 2.
Keen, best advice might be to stay away from lines. use big strokes, and keep it hard, the softer brushes you use, the blurrier it looks.
ru4it, its realy weak, i can hardly see the lines. Try to keep it clean, sketch very light, and draw good lines over it. drawing a mouth with just lines will mostly turn out very weird looking.
keep the grid in mind, see if everything is in line, the center of his nose looks weird compared to the center of the hat, suit, keep those things in mind. Also his skull goes right into the hat.
Jouste! i really dig the character, but it doesnt look .. its weird. the object he is holding doesnt suit him, or atleast can be improved. But what really bugs me, is the legs, they look awfuly weird
Top part of the img looks hot! but the lower part doesnt live up to the same qualit
waiting to see what you come up with!

of course the logo hasnt been pu ton yet but im working on it.
I hate you.

This is my first competition on the international level, I'd really appreciate all the comments and help I can get to make my work better.
I've got the idea for my War General from the Japanese folklore monster (that I think everyone recognise) "Nine-tailed Fox".
Let me know what you think! Thank you!

Its all in the details
pior? killingpeople? gauss? all you other sexy men.. Blowing magic seashell wissle!
jesse, you got a little white on ya.
I'm playing catch-up, some ideas for faces.
Hey I would say make the Raven clasps a tad smaller. Right now they are pretty large. Don't shrink them by too much but maybe 75-85 %.
no way, if anything the raven's should be bigger. and real. you should have actual ravens holding your clasp. with blood red eyes.
epic.

I'm down!
So......I'm brand new to painting. Anyone have any advice as to how I should approach digital painting? Anything will help, thanks.

C&C r welcome
Sorry about the quality of the pic i had to take it with my phone
