Ged - here's my go at liquify with your last update
i do like your color choice and lighting scheme though, it's very imposing without looking too contrived. i demand to know, why is he flying game artisan's colors??
sssshhh hes undercover! lol ...actually I just didnt think green would be right for him.
Hey thanks snowfly those are all good points. I will see what I can do later, I was trying to go for a slightly lanky emotionally scarred general which isnt really what people probably want and I can see your paintover is probably more what people would want to see in this comp. I like the way you gave him some more beefyness. One thing I found a little to different is that on your paintover hes looking to the left but on mine I wanted it to look like he was looking straight at the viewer with cold emotionless eyes.
I figured i'd do the opposite of the character i'm doing for 3d. Melted some ideas from the various chars i drafted.
You guys are all looking good. Still waiting for an update from xysdf though
snow> kicking ass
yunsama> nine tails in one of my favs. Keep going!
funshark> You're on to something there. Check your alignment though, the face place is a little off.
"oh what...has she got a monsterbaby on her head?"
yes. It's her bad side.
some additional inspiration from delirium from SandMan btw. Forgot to mention that. Probably not that apparent, but I figured worth mentioning in case anyone wonders.
Wow, I almost missed this mini challenge. Decided to come 'home' to the forum where my obsession with game art started years and years ago. Some great stuff going on in here!
*snip*
Eventide - Not a lot of time to pick up photoshop painting (we've got about a week now left, right?) But here's the first steps: Work in lots of layers, and use different brush opacities.
As for the drawing, looks cool so far. Make sure to get good reference for armour. Also, foreshortening looks awkward at the best of times. Avoid weird front on angles whenever possible. Basically, find a better position for his (I think it's a 'his'?) right arm. Try moving it above his head or to the side.
*snip*
Keep fighting the good fight everyone!!
Thanks for the pointers Mezz. I'll try different arm positions in a little bit. I'm hoping that some of my texturing and design experience will translate into a base ability to paint pictures, but if not I'll just not submit this and use it as a learning experience... and I tend to learn best under presure :P
Thanks for the feedback Loch.
Started ideation for the General. I want to show battle scars but since he won't be in a close up in my scene or he'll be in tight perspective I decided to give him a prosthetic/cyborg arm. Like he lost his original limb from a previous war or something.
Center figure is what I'm thinking of for costume.
Mechs right and left, just some quick concepts. I'm thinking more of silhouettes at this point.
Hey Rens, it's looking good, but you should know that the highlight on the eye is making it weird. That highlight will always match the angle of the light that is pointing at it, and it looks like the lighting is pretty much face foward, not an an angle towards the bottom left.
Also remember that the eye is an orb, it should have its own (very subtle) shading.
hey dudes, got some start up juices flowing. one is just a picture of an actual general i googled for warm up the second is my actual idea, lets see if i stick with it
wicked, that is a really fun head shape. the face looks a little more mopey than stoic though. he is a general, make him proud or angry. you are on polycount...make him angry. cant wait for an update on him
Richkid: Yea I have intentions to do that already. My process is basic. I usually whip out a simplified version of what I would consider horrible design, it gives me the drive to perfect it cause I can't stand anything I would consider amateur (especially when it's me designing it). I promise he will be very angry:poly127: about life by the time I'm done with him.
Here's an update of my Generals head... Crits please!
Hi, I did an alteration and want to know your opinion which you like better, the one I posted above or this one. This one I actually did first then did the one above. Now I'm leaning back on this one, but would love some input. Thanks!

Zatoichi: I would say if your going to go with this one to either take away or add to the horn in the middle of his dome there, its really distracting and takes my attention away from everything else. The cigar adds a nice touch but I would add a uniform or war armor for his role as General. I still have yet to do this, but that's what I'm going to get to tonight.
Here's my entry for now, put 1/2 and hour aside tonight, been working long hours lately so it's been hard but I wan't to be a part of this plus it's a great learning experience.
This guy is called 'Turbine', the idea is he's wearing a backpack with kerosine, the turbine is located in his stomach, he feeds on enemies by sucking them in through the sharp blades and also can use reverse thrust to move around really quickly. Will include the polycount logo in the centre of the turbine when it's fleshed out a bit more.
Until completion gentlemen, all your base are yours:)
Trying to hustle through this to get caught up. Here's a new update. I changed his face a bit and started on his uniform. I have a lot of ideas in my head right now so it'll be interesting to see how he changes in the next couple days.
Lowered the horizon. Thought of a hostile survivor (will think of uniform design later). Dark mass behind represents the troops - I'm still figuring out a design for them. Taller shapes represent ruins - I'll see if I'll have time to actually detail those out for the final.
Re-posed the General. Mech designs still being worked on.
Magic sugar I really like this idea! I think if you angle your shot this way you will have a more dynamic picture and be able to focus more on the general and less on painting background elements. I did a quick paintover to illustrate. Hope this helps:)

Thanks for the critique. I removed the horn and thought, "Eureka, why don't I put an even MORE disturbing thing... like Polycount's own smiley!"
Thanks Cold, thats just the slap in the face i needed. I think its from when i started, i changed alot of things, and the light aswell. Will work on the eyes and make some big changes.
GCMP - Sounds cool but shouldn't you focus on look and design rather then what he does and background info? I mean its a War General portrait. Someone that looks importand and in control and not a game character with a specific talent skill or functionality.
Just my 2 cents
I will be starting on my design tomorrow, since tonight is TF2 night :P scout FTW!
@yunsama: I think your war general looks a bit like an enchanted anime female. Maybe her expression could look a bit more foxy. I'm curious how your design will look when you add some colors.
@namuro: I love your stitched on polyblob eye patch. I do think the neck area looks a tad too long/ stretched.
@DemonPrincess: I'm not going to enter the main contest. I'm a bit too rusty for that at the moment, but I really like the mini contest. I think I'll submit an update tomorrow. I'm also working on that fairy texture again. Progress is slow, because I'm still experimenting with the design.
OH SNAP!! peppi out of nowhere bringing the gnar. that sir...is neat
doc- you make me happy. you should put soot on his face with the eyes left clean like he just took off those goggles. would bring together the goggles bird and wings badge and make a nice little story. maybe this was right after some sweet dog fight.
snowfly- that creature is gross and should be killed with fire. the piece is sweet though.
im getting off work soon, maybe i will have some time tonight to work on the ghostface

Cool I won't and this IS war!
Bit more rough done, doing mostly facial stuff now...
Some really awesome work in here, big fan of how Xysdf's is coming along, love your style. I'm also diggin Doc_Robs, i love the stylisation, cant wait to see what you do with the grenades ;p, snowfly and Peppi, those are looking amazing too.
Wells, I've been lurking for a long time around all the communities, and this year I wanna take part in the dominance war, since I lurk around here the most, I'll be joining PC, and cuz i love the place, its taught me so much
anyhows, here's the wips of my general, when I heard "Green and black" I couldn't get the image of Sharpe out of my head, but i've spiced it up a little, this my first concept in Corel painter, normally I use photoshop, but I really wanted a painting feel to this, it ended up feeling a bit characaturish though ;p, not my usual style
Lol omg what have I gotten myself into. I'm hoping I'll be able to muster enough time to finish because I have a long ways to go, and my first try is taking me a while. To everyone else, awesome stuff!
I'm starting to wonder where I'm going with this exactly, but I'm going to see him through. I really need more practice painting in photoshop, and REALLY need to work more in color.
As always, any help, comments, etc. would be wonderful.
Beluosus> Please accept this paintover with explanation. Painting is a huge process to learn, mainly because you have to get a feel for what works artistically, but the process itself isn't byzantine at all.
You need to set and compose a scene before you do anything. You do this with lighting, and blocking in set pieces. Whenver you see someone working in a super rough black and white scene, this is what they are doing.
When you are done composing, you block in your shapes, and try to get a silhouette of everything. If you're working with line art, you've already hopefully got the silhouette down.
You then set materials and undertones, which basically I just call the layer of paint that describes basic colors, and what things are made of. You have to think about what things are made of at this point. If its flesh, your undertone is going to be whatever color the muscle and blood is + the light's color.
Last thing once everything is described, you render the surface/paint everything. Add shinyness/sfx Casted shadows and stuff last (or where ever it is need upon where it is layered in the picture).
This is just a process that I find works most of the time. I've seen people ( and myself) work forwards and backwards through this, and with photoshop you can . But these seem like the basic steps most people work from. Hope it helps.
And this is going to be something you've probably heard a million times, but...
I really really really suggest looking at the real world for references on how to render things. The more you think through what you are doing, the more accurate you can get things on your first pass. References are your best friend.

The suit is just temp, still need to come up with a design.

also just some topical ref if you're interested.

Today's work was mostly on her face. I've blended it more realistically and am pretty happy with it. I added an extra layer to throw on some wrinkles.
The only other thing I touched from the last update is her hat: I tried to solidify the form so it looks a little less... weird.
C&C welcome as always.
Othwerise, looking good everyone Can't wait to see people's finished work!

Thought I'd give this a quick bash, W.I.P!!!
Need to start cleaning this guy up...there's way too much going on, and not enough focus. And as usual, monitor calibration problems.
Peppi - hotness
