Hey. Awesome thread! registered to say thanks and answer the question about keeping your inspirtation folder online.
that google chrome extension mentioned a few pages back is now adware
so in order of oldest method first.
1. drop box. keep your inspiration folder in your drop box. it will always be available online.
2. copy ( https://copy.com?r=XAcktm ) just like drop box. but you get 20gb free, and 5gb if you follow a referal or refer someone. without any limits. so if you register through that link, will be awesome for me ).
3. Picasa - it has a sync folder option. Which is nice, coz now all my photos appear in the default gallery of all android devices im logged into. And it looks nice.
4. Pinterest.com This is my new method. Im still not sure about it. Awesome thing is that when you save an image (pin) you can see who else pinned it and what boards it was pinned on. And sometimes find A LOT of amazing stuff. Disadvantages: can result in being a massive time suck. Also no offline access
Hope this helps someone. Im going back to going through the rest of this thread now )
I dont know if time management has been brought up but I use the Pomodoro technique to be more productive and focused.
there's many apps for this but this is the one I use: http://www.teamviz.com/
And heads up to people with Mac, the OSX version of Crazybump has been in beta forever and it never expired so it's basically free and works great (but has a bug you'll definitely notice). http://crazybump.com/mac/
I think the deb forgot about it.
Don´t know if this has been posted before.
Clover is a plugin for windows explorer that let´s you use the tab and bookmarks to explore your HDD as if you were using Chrome or Firefox. Love it!
I've been using Pureref for viewing my references. You drag and drop images from your computer or the web and its window will stay on top. You can rotate, flip, resize and organize your refs http://www.pureref.com/
Not sure if anyone's mentioned it, but for showing off work, I use Verold if I want to show more than a render. It's a WebGL platform for embedding and sharing your 3D work onto the web. I know there's a way you can embed to here on Polycount, but I haven't figured it out yet.

There is this amazing picture viewer http://www.nyam.pe.kr/blog/entry/Imagine
I've been using it for years and love it so much.
It's free, lightweight, extremely fast, customizable and supports many formats. Can't remember a single crash. IMO much better than ACDsee, XnView, FastStone etc. It really is a shame it's not that popular.
Only minor drawbacks are default white background, and also default hotkeys could be more convenient. But you can change this whatever you wish.
Holy Cow... so many cool things.
These hadn't been talked about extensively but for those of you wanting to hand paint tileables www.krita.org is great.
There's an option to tile the texture in the window and it will follow the stroke all the way to the other side.
Also I saw an FX Editor - there is also PopcornFX
I haven't tried it but looks awesome. It links up with Unity and Substance Painter.
A great app to take screenshot, huge time saver when you have to make feedback, or do some image tutorial
it's so simple to use, you can just click and drag to take screenshot of any area on your screen, quickly add stuff like arrow, text, frames and it also has pen tool.
"Download them all" is a great add on for firefox. It automates the image downloading process. I use it for downloading reference images, cg textures, making a large queue of other inspiring artists' images for cool desktop backgrounds. It's really amazing.
Hi, I would like to share with you a hotkey managing application I've designed.
LiteKeys is a hotkey manager for Windows operating systems designed to assign hotkeys for multiple keyboards connected to the computer.
The original purpose of the LiteKeys is to improve ergonomics while working with graphics tablet. It allows you to connect an additional keyboard, which you can place at a comfortable spot, and use its keys as shortcuts.
However the LiteKeys can enhance your workflow even when you are not using the tablet. You can use the extra keyboard to assign hotkeys for tasks that you perform repeatedly. You can see the various actions that you can assign to keys with the LiteKeys below in the Features list.
Features
Allows multiple keyboards to be recognized and used to trigger the hotkeys
Hotkeys can be defined for specific applications
Various actions can be assigned to the individual hotkeys (listed with examples how it can be used)
Simulate keystrokes (you can have a single key act as any keys combination to activate a keyboard shortcut)
Paste predefined text (can be used to reproduce the email signature, code blocks, etc.)
Paste text copied on the fly (this virtually allows you to have multiple clipboard slots for text)
Execute file (you can start some application, or run a script)
Setting through graphical user interface (no scripting or coding of any kind is needed)
Completely free, open source, without any advertising
Does anybody knows of a good tool to make my way quicker to specific folders?
I mean, I guess a lot of us has that problem... You edit a texture in photoshop, thgen you have to import it in Unity, then in substance, then bake another in Xnormal, then tweak something on the model in max and then in zbrush, and back to xnormal... and on each step, in each open (or import) explorer you had to go to -> My stuff -> dropbox -> personal files -> game1 -> unity project -> assets - > textures -> metal_pack...
I usually keep an explorer folder open on the folder I use the most, and then copy the path on the top bar, and paste it in the file name on the browser window on the soft I want to open something... but is there anything easier than that??
Thank you!!

One more vote for Clover. Though loads of my co-workers swear by Total Commander and similar applications. For me clover works just fine. I have favourites on top that I change once in a while depending on my needs (some stuff obviously stays). And tabs make it so much better.
Wanted to provide a alternative to clover.
I used clover before, but for me it sometimes got slow and crashed, so I now I use this which works better for me.

Interesting as I use QTTBar at work and Clover at home. For me Clover has crashed once I think, but QTTBar seems a bit weaker. I set up some favourites on top and it "forgot" them after couple restarts. Maybe it was just me or I messed it up.
One vote for QTTabbar here, after I install Clover, explorer.exe has crashed, so I tried QTTabbar, at first it seems janky, but actually it's fully customizable, you can just turn off all the little annoying feature and use the tabs. And one thing I love about it is it has the name filter.

Clover adds Google chrome tabs to file explorer, so you can have tabs on multiple folders, bookmarks, and everything.

Linux - as a desktop it's faster than Windows when I use a light desktop environment like Xfce, very snappy and responsive.
Bash shell - great for quick scripts (part of every Linux distro)
ImageMagick - for manipulating many images quickly (convertion, watermarking, resizing, etc)

I've also posted a separate thread for the app, so you can discuss it there (I would appreciate any feedback): LiteKeys thread
I also use it for storing ideas, adding ref material and pics when I come across them.

Yeah, it's a shame.
Directfolders somewhat works, but I found that to be janky as well.
