I use to know all the good ones but it's been years since I've needed them.
I use Avast, but have been considering switching to Comodo - not that I've had any problems with Avast, but Comodo looks a little bit more robust in terms of customization.

I use AntiVir at home and Kaspersky at work. Kaspersky is not free, but two weeks ago I saw it for less than 20 on the shelves. Seems like a reasonable price.
Anyone know of a good Ultramon equivalent? I could really use it at work but I don't want to fork over another £30 just for another liscence to use it here.
I couldnt find a decent one either. Well I guess it depends on what features you need specifically, theres a free version of DisplayFusion (http://www.binaryfortress.com/displayfusion/compare/) that has multi-wallpaper options and a hotkey to move the windows to the other monitor... but its missing the multi-taskbar
I recently googled for one too and ended up downloading Avast. You'll find 100s of positive comments about most of them, its hard to find a "best". AVG, Avast and Antivir seem to be the most discussed though, but of course that is no indication of them being the "best"
The free version doesn't run 24-7 in your systray but I prefer it that way. I'm not a fan of anti-virus programs running in memory. Is that too risky? FireFox + NoScript is all I've ever needed to protect myself IMO. If something does feel wrong I just do a quick scan with Malwarebytes. I'll run it every couple of months.

I'm not a fan either. But a few days ago my hard drive died for no apparent reason. I didnt lose much data though because I backup everything on other hard drives and internet storage sites, but still, the point is, shit happens and it can happen to you.
I don't really know for a fact that anti viruses work, whether they can prevent something from happening. But lets say the chances of it preventing some kind of attack was 0.01%, I still think its worth it. Just like backing up your stuff in case of that 0.01% chance of your hard drive dying.
my first post here. My commonly used free apps. cheerz:) mesh lab for decimation and some retopology options (in case I am not inthe mood of painting topology in zbrush. XNormal for most baking stuff. MemStatus in case your system is too bizy and ctrl+alt+delete is not working to show you how much memory is in use also tells you about your RAM and VGA memory usage both at the same time. just 10 kb in size. I love it Belarc Advisor the best clear infact nude picture of your system. I love it Filezilla for my ftp TimeLeft I found it the best and most efficient utility for time management stuff. also I use its sticky notes sometimes. Tree size a great tool to look at the sizes of your virtual drives, sub folders, in a single click.. I love it.
I have checking some of the applications mentioned by some users and I think its a great thread..

In case this hasn't been posted before --- this is GOLD!
TerraCopy - http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php
This completely, automatically replaces windows copy-paste process with a fully configurable one. No app needed to launch, no nothing, it just replaces it quietly, ctrl-c / ctrl-v.
Also check out other apps from this guy, REALLY good stuff.
Folder Size
Lightweight folder size tracking. Folder Size visually displays the size of each folder in the form of a bar graph click a folder bar and it will drill down and show sizes of folders within. (like tree size but more intuitive and lightweight)
Super
a video converter, that eats and puts out everything!
if you don't find the download go where else i.e. here the homesite is complicated
i found it useful to create flv's out of my avis, to place video tutorials on area.autodesk.com
Alright, here's a real longshot, but is there software out there that I can install that would use other computers on my network to increase this computers performance? I know Backburner does renders, but I'm talking about viewport speeds in Max and Zbrush. I think this would be cloud computing, so probably not. It's still pretty new.
Suggestions for a open source video editing suite? Tried a few thus far and haven't found one that clicks. I like Corels Editing Suite, but Im too cheap to buy it for the little use it would actually get (that and it crashed easily).

This one is good for completely unistalling progs. Even the registry changes they made when installing get undone. Advanced Uninstaller Pro
And this is for running a prog in isolation. It essentially creates a temporary virtual machine so you can run your browser in it and not worry about anything infecting your system, since it just gets written to a virtual machine that you can delete. Sandboxie
This is pretty handy. Basically lists a shitload of pretty common stuff you'd install on a new machine (browser, messenger, disk utilities, etc), which you check off and download a hands-off installer for. Cuts down on a lot of the hunting and downloading, and it's even better for installing stuff on a relative's computer when they're almost completely computer illiterate (just did this for my mum)
This is a reverse image search engine. It's useful for finding the source, or other versions of, an image you already have. Might be helpful for finding out who to credit on unlabeled concept art and that sort of thing. http://www.tineye.com

Unfortunately this is actually not the source of this Captain America
Determined to find something that worked I continued searching....
Tested about 10 more images from various 3d and concept artist portfolios and none of them worked either.
So conclusion; this tool is not yet good enough to find the creator of an image, especially for game art or concept art. In fact its easier to use google to find the original artists.
Mmm, yeah. Just tried a few myself and I see what you mean. Not valuable at all yet. I'd been using it to check if profile pictures of people who try to add me on social networking sites are spammers or not, and it worked a little better for that, so I thought it would be of use for this stuff too. But yeah, nope. Posted too soon.
Since Launchy has not been updated for ages now, I've been searching for an alternative and stumbled upon Blaze. It's not skinnable yet, but has a bunch of features Launchy doesn't.
Alex Feinman's iso recorder - http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm
right click .iso, 'Copy to Disc', 1 click dialogue to start burning. Perfect for bootable CDs and sensitive installs, this works where nero/etc. fail
Folder Menu - "You can quickly jump to your favorite folders in explorer, open/save dialog or command prompt...and more. You can also launch your favorite folders, files or urls."
I love this tool! You can customize your desktop with "apps". For example a box where a textfile is shown and updated when it is changed. I love to use that for logfiles of the games i work on. So i can run the game and see instantly when there are reported error in the log.
Nice one! If used properly this could beat the crap out of my Win7 Gadgets.
Do you happeb to know if it runs under Win7x64? The site isn't clear about that...
Hide unused formats in open/save dialogs! For those who --like me-- find the overwhelming amount of never-used filetypes in max and Photoshop to be a bit of a pain.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is probably my favorite. It finds and fixes anything I've ever thrown at it.

Both are free, both are almost effortless.

I found the previous release of Notepad++ to be pretty crashy (like, at least once a day if you were unlucky).
However since I got the latest version, it seems fine. No crashes yet!
