this is looking so fucking sweet man , loving the colors , altho in the concept it was a tad more greenish etc, right now he comes more Aztecish to me , but both are cool so
vahl, vahl.. my man...
please... that straw pattern on the hat.. it's killin me man. Everything else is overall ok; nice skin tones, cool concept, etc... but that straw pattern just screams to me!!! I know you can use alpha stamps, or whatever.. but i think it just looks tiley and unrealistic.
good luck
I don't mean to say that the piece is bad, in fact, I like it. But let's say, if this were my own, I'd spend a bit more time fixing that straw pattern. The reason why I say it 'screams' at me is because it's very easy to see how you made it... instead of seeing a straw pattern, I see a tiling texture with some bump. Know what I mean? Everything else is organic enough to be believable, but the straw to me seems the only one thing that to me breaks the illusion of reality and gives way to artificiality.
Now, the photograph shows the straws inter-tangle very nicely, the depth is very clear and there's also a very natural progression to how straw patterns are made, they usually converge toward the center in a very specific way. More specifically, I think the straw strands in your pattern all have the same 'height', and no shape... you don't really see them overlap between each other. A bit of manual tweaking there could do the trick.
It's really just a small thing that I think could improve the impact of your character.
Now, if most people don't mind, I don't see why you should even bother fixing it... I'm the lone voice here... but definetely in the spirit of giving ideas that could make it improve!
Now, some beautiful Aztec poetry for all of us to enjoy!!!
"ALL THE EARTH IS A GRAVE"
All the earth is a grave and nothing escapes it, nothing is so perfect
that it does not descend to its tomb. Rivers, rivulets, fountains and
waters flow, but never return to their joyful beginnings; anxiously
they hasten on the vast realms of the rain god. As they widen their
banks, they also fashion the sad urn of their burial.
Filled are the bowels of the earth with pestilential dust once flesh and bone, once animate bodies of man who sat upon thrones, decided cases, presided in council, commanded armies, conquered provinces, possessed treasure, destroyed temples, exulted in their pride, majesty, fortune, praise and power. Vanished are these glories, just as the fearful smoke vanishes that belches forth from the infernal fires of Popocatepetl. Nothing recalls them but the written page.
This is one of my favorite entries. It looks fresh and original and the execution is spot on.
The only little thing that bothers me are his teeth/fangs. They look very painted on because they don't seem to be modelled at all in the lowpoly. It's especially apparant on the left side of the last render; the fang looks very flat and oddly bended.
Renaud, Mongrelman, Brome, Target_Renegade, Mathorne, Jaco, Ksan, Levus, Foreverending, kakikukeko, Rooster, Vassago, Struve, Slosh, Rollin, |Xnenon|, Martinipants, dur23, Firecracker197 : thank you guys , that's really a great motivation push
Rick :thanks dude, nope no SSS, but there's a slight ramp shader that may help a little, the lighting helps too
GoSsS : thanks, this is rendered in realtime, like last year, I'm using 8monkeylab's awesome engine.
Miguelito : thanks a lot as I said I'm using 8monkey's engine, like last year, except that I know it a bit better now, I just use the built in shader and one of the lighting presets coming with it
Johny : thanks my friend, I'll probably play with postfx to get the same feel the concept had in the end, you know like me what marmoset is capable of on that regard
Josh : rice hat ftw indeed loved your entry man, my definite favorite on GA
MM : thanks yep that's more or less inspired from that (well the hanging parchments) watched ninja scroll one night and there you go, Dom also pointed out some more information about those in one of the previous pages .
Corrosion : I tried to break the pattern with more color variation and more work in the spec, hope that helps not making your eyes bleed.
dUb : fixed thanks for the reminder
Stimpack : thanks dude, hopefully, the final pose/render/lighting will fix this.
ok, now some pic action, the lighting is a bit stronger there, I didn't change the skintones since I love them, so if people don't like, I can still go back to my previous lighting setup
Looks awesome Vahl, the reason I asked about sword of doom, is a. it's a awesome movie and b. your character reminds me of the main character in the film. Keep it up man.
looks amazing! last update was major improvement, especially on the book and the robes. looking forward to the finished piece! (and i wonder how your alpha map is going to look too )
Fantastic my friend, really amazed at how you took this guy through the processes, learned quite a few things along the way. Great piece to be proud of.
I absolutely love the winning pose. The pages flying around are a fantastic touch and really push the idea of the Polynomicon. You pushed yourself with this and I think it really shows.
If I were to suggest one thing it'd be to light the crystals up and give him some subtle blue undertones.

whew!!!
The hat is perfect, the model this far is superb. His toes are a bit pointy but I doubt anyone will ever get to see them this close again.
I say keep everything you have and keep going.
Don't post again until we've some specular to see!

also, now with specular and additional bumpmap.
this alpha stuff is working realy well!
came out fucking awesome...patterns are really nice.
im not too sure about the purple on the book though.
JFletcher : thanks man, it's gone now
Impressive work, the texturing is really amazing..
I dont know if its just the lighting or what, but I prefered the two previous pictures when you had some emerald green somewhere im the model.. I think it goes very nicely with your skin tones..
here in the metal:http://wip.global-illusions.com/Domwar3/Grimoire_TextureWip02.JPG
or here on the robe:http://wip.global-illusions.com/Domwar3/Grimoire_Marmoset.jpg
still kickass tho
Stunning work, vahl.

Fucking awesome!
Win.
The skin looks a tiny bit too plasticy/shiny for my taste.
It looked a lot more flesh-like in this version: http://wip.global-illusions.com/Domwar3/Grimoire_Marmoset.jpg , it even looked like it had SSS
But maybe you're going for a more alien/fantasy look?
I love all that very small details, seems you put every pixel in good use.
anyways, here are the submitted pictures :
I really like the spellbook pages flying around him
Congrats on finishing this up

I thought I already saw the best entries, and then "bam" another one.
Would not want to be a judge in this contest.
Like the desaturated look of the tatoo makes him look really old.
good luck (not that you'll need it!)
