I see your point, but I'm gonna make the most unbelievably badass planet-smashing baby-stomping character I can, regardless of the skill level of my competitors. They will all die at the hands of whatever kind of crazy motherfucker I decide to make, whether or not they're on a team.
Teams, no teams, whatever. Lets kick some non-polycount asses into the next 14 dimensions of painful, hellish defeat.
If you're not going green, you're going down.

God, I just wanna punch something. Lets get this show on the road!
Are the entries judged more heavily on the final aesthetics than technical aspects? Because I see some of the past entrants modeled their character in a pose or don't worry about deformations or the design restricting the characters movement.
Is it more like making a game-resolution figure than something that could animate and deform well in a game?

I personally know I'm nowhere near as good as half the guys entering this comp. But knowing I gave it my best and managed to finish my entry is all the reward I'd really need (and all I'm really aiming for).
[/ QUOTE ] That's not all you get, I leaned heaps each year and they really pushed my character art forward. I'm looking forward to what Indian Boy (and a bunch of other self proclaimed newbies) churns out this year, I'll be shocked if it doesn't put his entry last year to shame. As much as he can be annoying, he learned a ton and I'm pretty sure the DOMWar last year gave him a big boost.
Although is ego strokingly nice to hear myself maury and jay referred to as a dream team, both maury and I were sitting discussing the fact that neither of us have
done anything other than UT/Gears for about 4 years.
I'm looking at the comp as a way of finding out if I can still do something other than make very decorative lego bits
based of anothers concept!
I know I can model fairly well but I haven't made a texture in years so I will have to relearn how that works now and
I've not made any character art since UC2, other than a statue in UT3.
I'm looking forward to seeing if I have any decent ideas of my own still because its been so long since I dared to try.

HELL YEAYA!
ill fix up the annoyingness, i swear .
but yea, thats the reason i'm joining: to improve! and then get to a level where i stand a chance to win [and to improve, i aim to win, so its the 'same thing' at the core].
Ror: would love to see entries from all the PC epic crew, yourself especially. while initially resistant to the way this year's war is going to be conducted, i think it'll give more opportunity for good showcases and competition, not less...
hawkprey better kick some asses in the concept art category, i want a good fight
I'm sure we can find reasons to delay this thing to November, but let's just stick with a date. Having a job I need some kind of foresight so I can schedule my time so I can actually compete in this thing, perhaps take a week off work to really get a chance to get started.
I don't think 3 weeks to prepare for the war is too much to ask for.

Neither is an intelligible topic, but we didn't get that last year. But, I shouldn't bash. . . Dom War is what it is, and it is an excellent contest put together selflessly for our enjoyment. It's hard to sound self-righteous when nitpicking Dom War when the whole thing is awesome, free, and for the good of the community.
But it isn't really free, is it. We might not pay to compete in it, but we're investing a huge amount of valuable time which makes it bigger, and better every year. Fred lays down the foundation, which is a lot of hard work, but ultimately it's our commonly invested time that makes DW as awesome as it is.
yeah your time...please don't forget that Fred paid for all the prizes last year.
Organizing that stuff takes more time than us pushing verts and is way less fun, so no, Fred made the war awesome, we just enjoyed it.
here here, any niggles people may have fade into insignificance when you consider how hard it must be to get the whole ball rolling and put it all together. Hell my entry didn't even get submitted in the end but I didn't really care. Its the uniting of polycount to smush the other guys that makes it worthwhile, and Fred makes it all possible
I don't see it being about the prizes, though. I'd compete even if it was just for the glory, and for the learning experience. Hell, if I'd win something like a Wii, 360, PS3, or any other console, I'd rather Fred give it to Child's Play instead of sending it to me. (If against all odds I do win something like this, you can hold me to it.)
I don't know if I come off as an ungrateful jerk, or something, but I do value my time, and no matter how many hours Fred put into this, it would all be for nothing if we didn't put our time into it. It's one of those symbiotic things. Oh, and to make me an even easier target: I'll most likely be competing for GameArtisans

My previous snarkiness was uncalled for. DomWar is a free opportunity for groups of game developers to have fun. Participate if you like, skip it if you don't.
those who want to enter bad enough will MAKE time.
and forum regulars knew this was going to happen at this time of the year. has been the same month for the past 2 years. and there was an announcement 6 months ago that an announcement would be be made in December about the war. this thread was started 2 weeks ago, you've had time to prepare.
but let's not de-rail this thread any further...
good luck everyone! i know i will see some amazing work from you!
Looking forward to it. Dunno if I'll have much time this year with my kid due in the next few weeks (I'm gonna be a dad ) but I'll certaily give it a good go. Too much fun to miss out on.
aesir, vermilion, I wasn't trying to pick a fight or something, but in hindsight I think I was coming off as a bit passive aggressive, and I apologise to anyone whom I might have ruined the mood for in this thread.
Yeah, congrats Xaltar:) My child is due within the next month and a half so I as well will be really busy. Ensemble is also going into crunch for a month ( just found this out the other day ), along with my 2 classes that I teach at the Art Institute of Dallas I am not sure I can pull in for the war this year. But going to try my best, if not I will be on the sidelines cheering the Green and Black on.
