Did this in 3-4hrs tonight. Maybe finish it up and model him out, not sure. I know he's kinda generic, but I wanted a very obviously post-apocolyptic character.
I think the colours are too overly saturated.. they need to be dulled down a bit and I think the background is fighting too much with the figures, possibly make it darker to recess it a bit. I also think this would benefit from a strong lightsource, the shading is a bit non descript.
Its an interesting idea it be cool to see them side by side.

oops.. was so tired last night...
yeah im darkening up the background. mostly done on the female and started on the male. so slow working around the interior bits.
Its up higher than the left one, and unless her head is tilted to the side (which would be evident in the rest of the features)or she's Shannon Dougherty then that might be the cause of the wonkiness
lol neither of them its supposed to be kate beckinsale .. I think .. with me its wierd I can hit the likeness of a person I know dead on .. but when it comes to pics of celebrity it goes awol..
Well I didn't really think it looked like Shannon Dougherty...its just that she is outrageously asymmetrical. Which is probably why almost every picture of her face she has her head tilted
my beef actually checking what ryder really looked like (not my warped imagination) shes not as shexy as your image [image]my beef actually checking what ryder really looked like (not my warped imagination) shes not as shexy as your image
I think the flatness is due to lack of contrast. Both value contrast and temperature contrast. When you are outside the ambient light is bluish, so your skin is going to pick up that color, so the highlights are going to have a cool tinge, where as the shadows are going to be warm. Also think of it this way, the highlight is really just a specular reflection diffused by the tiny bumps in our skin. So what is it going to mostly reflect outside? The Sky! YAY I get a cookie...no? oh alright...anyway, I did a little paint over here if ya don't mind to illustrate what I'm talking about. Also I used a levels adustment layer to bump up the value contrast and saturation a wee bit.
Thanks, Cthogua, it's appreciated : ) ! I knew that shadow should be more saturated than highlight, but never had any idea of how much - I used far too little contrast, it seems now.
Makkon: despite your slight antipathy for that sketch, it reveals a really inspiring confidence with line and form. reminds me of how much more time i need to spend drawing cloth/normal clothing... all my characters have worn form-fitting garments or rigid armor for far too long
Some stuff I sketched while waiting for my girlfiends car to get fixed. The one with the building is a study of some Alan Lee work from "The Art of Return of the King"
regarding the two paintings i posted: over this weekend the AC unit in the art building broke and we had torrential rain all weekend(you may have heard about KY's weather on the news). well, the dehumidifier in the building stope working and the AC died so all weekend it was pumping warm moist air into the building. quite a bit of condensation. walls were wet to touch, stairwell was a death trap, elevator died. it was 25 degrees warmer inside than out and sitting around 90%+ humidity inside.
my paintings are now warped to shit.
thanks to the prof constantly having students buy cheap stretchers/frames at the university bookstore instead of teaching us how to make our own, btw.
the canvas is stretched tight as a drum. i twisted one back to shape to see if cross braces would help.. the frame started splintering when i did so. mine werent teh only ones. a few others are warped, only one worse and several paper pieces through the building are wrinkled and stuff has fallen off the walls.
luckily my new large canvas was in an office and did not get anywhere near the same amount of humidity. so it's all fine.
Wanted to work on my 2d skills a bit mainly to up my texturing ability. Been working on this guy for the last couple days, no ref used but did consult the first few steps of a skin painting tutorial.

snemmy looking forward to seeing progress... I'd consider bringing the green to be closer to the rest of the palette in hue? maybe?
