I don't have an ipad+pencil yet but I was debating getting one. My big problem is that most of my sketchbooks get filled up with notes and words about whatever I'm working on with only 30-40% of the sketchbook being thumbnails. For anything beyond just ideation I end up using my laptop with intuos so it'd be nice to have a midway point. Just haven't really been sold yet and my experience with cintique has kind of brought up the fact that on a screen, drawing through my hand is frustrating. I'm interested in seeing where you take these man.
@Greg WestphalI hear you regarding note taking. My sketchbooks are much the same way, especially recently. Though maybe closer to 10-20% notes. I've found Trello to be an awesome little app to help organize thoughts and translate them into tasks/processes. The trick for me is that I've had to make it my homepage lest I lose track of my notes. Still, the act of physically writing something on paper seems to have some psychological magic to it.
Just as jealous as your brush strokes as ever. You finding it harder to do gradients or soft brush with Paintstorm? Was wondering if that was a conscience to work more graphically or a result of the medium.
@Greg Westphal Yeah, gradations are not too difficult with a soft brush, as the Pencil's sensitivity is pretty smooth. Though, I haven't found the PS style gradient tool... it's probably in there somewhere. I'm just not seeing it. As far as a more graphic style... Yeah, honestly I had JUST put down Sparth's Structura book when I picked up the iPad to sketch. His style certainly has some influence on my design sensibility. Lately, I have been trying to focus on strong shapes whether shadow or silhouette. That was the point of going black ink only during Inktober. So yes, and yes. It's partly a design/styl direction I've been working on, and it's partly the process.
Here's an idea I've had kicking around. What if Anakin's descent to the darkside were actually interesting? You know, like real hardship, real betrayals, moral dilemmas, injuries and sadness. What if his journey were gradual, 1000 wounds to get him there? I've stuffed the idea aside because.. well.. it's a franchise, and fan art makes me feel like I'm wasting my time on someone else's baby... but if nothing else, it's an exploration to see if I can communicate the impression, and test if my angle on the story holds any weight. (Procreate on iPad)
@Kay_x_Wil Thanks! The main thing I liked about the "normal" version is that the head on the left character seems to almost be giving a look to guy behind him.. and that gesture is completely lost on the other version. I suppose i could bash them together, but I changed the cape version to have more forward motion. Oh well, perhaps another day
@AnimatedStruggle thanks! Not all of these are done on iPad. I still have not customized brushes to my liking in Procreate. So I don't think I'll be putting Photoshop away anytime soon.
Loving this style!!! Do you mind if i use this gun toting sheriff to practice some simple animation? I'll credit you of course. Just trying to get better use to animating in Adobe Animate.
I'm sorry I don't have much constructive criticism to bring here, but I really wanted to drop by and say your style is just awesome. Its like shiving through my brain and eyes in a good way? I really really really like your brushstrokes and how you manage to use them so efficiently, this is phenomenal!
@Doodlok wow sounds painful! heh .. Thanks for the kind comments. For me, pursuing good stroke economy and the right textural feel has been a long road and rather elusive. I still feel this is an area that I want to continue to push.
@RyanB Thanks! No promises, but I'm hoping to flesh these out a bit more. Glad you like them

good stuff.
I played a bit tonight with Paintstorm. I'm still getting the hang of digital painting on iPad.

I like the scifi theme, but preferred some elements of the present-day theme. Whatevski
