Carty is finally submitted! It's Carty & Cartus actually, depending on what side of the map you're playing on. Fingers crossed that it gets accepted - give it a thumbs up if you like it!
alright, items ready! Prepping for a submission with all the presentation whatnots and doodlethings now... aiming to have it on the workshop tomorrow night.
My gods, those colors turned out much better in game than I thought they would! Have you considered ramping the self illum towards the brightest parts of his blades to give em some more oomph?
The emblem on his mask turned out great too. Nice job!
@ Vayne - Yeah, green was a bold choice, intentionally. It does have a glow on it so I can see it reading as neon, though the core idea was that it was magically imbued with a poisonous or toxic essence. Once we pair the lore with the items I think it might make more sense. He has some vials on his front and back too to help carry/explain the green-en-ing
@ Nikey - Sure, I'll post them as soon as I finish the submission
@ Saya - I have. One of the blades does this already, I'm going to touch up the Self Illum map of the others tonight. Good eye. I don't know how much it will change the daylight view but you'll be able to tell at night.
@ Spudnik - Yeah, this is something we went back and forth on. The plan is to tint it about 20% more towards teal, but it will still mainly be the same feel as it is now. If you see the vials, we're going a tad more towards that.
here's hoping the rest of the stuff goes smoothly tonight, this guy took a lot XD
AWESOME Work! Really inspired by your thread to start working on some sets for Dota 2! I just have to make sure to study up on what is required for their sets and how to make sure that the items animate correctly in game etc.
Thanks guys!! Got another one for you - Snaggletooth! We started this months ago but ran into some complications that we were luckily able to resolve. Glad to finally have it in.
Heya guys, two more! These were done in a partnership with Nexon to help promote Dota 2 in Korea. We had a ton of fun working with them and are very proud of how the two items came out.
What maps do you use as a base for the diffuse? From the gif I can tell that you get the usual AO over the base color and then maybe a cavity map, but what about the next one? Is it a bent normal, PRT-P/N or a normal map channel?
My usual workflow regarding that is typically baking color and normal from the HP like usual, then in PS I use nDo2 to grab an AO, Cavity, and 'Diffuse' (kinda like cavity but with more info), which I composite together. Lately I've been baking object space and using Handplane to generate the tangent normals. In the order you see them in the gif's first 4 frames it's: Flat color > AO multiply > Cav/Diff Overlay > 3dcoat first pass
I put the AO at like 50-60% depending on what looks right and then toss a hue/saturation on it so the AO isn't just greys and blacks which will typically steal some life from the texture. This is set to multiply, then I put both cavity and diffuse bakes over that, set to Overlay. I just eyeball what feels good opacity wise for these, and cut out some of the darks in the layer settings or by using a curve/levels. I want shadowed areas but sometimes these bakes can be a little too obvious/harsh.
After that I collapse then bring it into 3d coat for a texture pass, then finish up/polish more in PS. I hope that helped answer your question!

Thanks for the reply! Some great info there
Never tried the 'Diffuse' from nDo2, going to check it out later. Also never thought about giving the AO some color, should help a bit making things less boring.
@PopCorn - I'm hoping to take some video of my next item of the texture process, plus I can answer any specific questions you might have. Looking to at least have gif's if not full video for all future projects. We'll see how that actually goes hehe.
@Pior - Thank you! Glad you like it. Oroboros did a great job with the concept.

This is crazy, I had to share. Apparently Nexon made a statue based on my first Dota 2 set, Ancestor's Pride! I'm super flattered and excited to see it. I wonder how I can get one? This is so exciting.

bounch, this has to be the best thing iv seen in a while!
ahh, that's a good suggestion vlad. I was mainly sticking to the concept 100% (like my boring self usually does), but that's a good suggestion. I tried painting in a lip under the eyes to catch light but im not sure how well I did. Either way, here's an update of the sword I'm making based off cottonwings' concept!
gonna submit tomorrow and cross my fingers that valve adds particles to the tip. Thanks for looking!

I'm going to take screens of the sculpt/lp/textures sometime this week and post em up.
Thanks for looking guys! I really appreciate it.
@ncallow - that's awesome man! Really glad to hear it. Looking forward to seeing stuff you come up with
thought I would post up the sculpts in case people wanted to see:
Did you have trouble with the small cracks and lines showing up in-game? Seems like a lot of those would get blurred out.
Hope you guys dig it!

Yeah, I'd absolutely love a copy plus a translation of the vid haha, I'm so curious what he's saying! I still can't believe they actually used it. !!!
I want to make sure I'm still posting wips and stuff so here's one of the weapons the talented cottonwings allowed me to create
