That is perfect. I totally forgot about floatring objects. Yes, I will bake normal map with floating object instead of modeling it ;)

you cant use the ptex if youn are using LOD for your object... or if you are like to reuse a texture for different objects and so on...

If they are different objects in the same obj then yes. In the materials tab on the right side you can assign materials to different objects in the scene.

Combine your objects per UV set. If everything is on one set of UVs, combine them into a single object and export to DDO.

If all the chains are separate objects with their transforms preserved, you could do the 'replace objects' option in maya, under the modify menu.
