Well, mate, the solution I find is a bit convoluted, but may work: Use Blender and get the i/o .ase plugin here (http://www.katsbits.com/tools/). Pay attention to the version, blender is rather catchy about it. Once imported in Blender, export as .obj or .3ds. Hope this will help.
