Is there a way in max to use the actual opacity of an image (ie. areas where there is no paint) to work like a b&w alpha in the viewport? So paint = solid, no paint = see through. If not natively, maybe with a a 3rd party shader?

I never tried it before so I'm complete newb but how are you suppose to light scenes with IBL like you see in Marmoset? I've imported a cubemap/HDR image and put it in the skylight but now I get black showing up. I also built the lighting too.

Rea Image Converter is actually a great tool, I have just searched for Image Converter and have tried a few, but was not happy. ReaConverter works great without a lot of complex processes. I was able to use it straight away.
