3dsmax 2012 render settings: scanline renderer use cage global supersampler none catmull rom filter highpoly mesh - 550,314 tris low poly - 352 tris 1024x1024 resolution. took me around 30 min. Is that normal? last time i rmb it takes only 5-10min max.
I'm wondering if anyone knows how to bake information from a low poly character, with the normal mapping texture info in a lit scene, into a texture file? I'm toying with Surface Sampler, toying with the "Diffuse Map" and "Lit and Shaded Color Map" output settings and so far I'm getting black image files.

Yeah normals gets locked all the damn time on imports for maya. It seems like on fbx's as long as you check the "unlock normals" box while importing it will work ok.

It's not the software, it's definitely the user and how much practice you've had. You're going to be able to get decent results from any of these programs if you dedicate some time to learning about them. Not sure about your normal map. So when I go to bake my normals in substance painter, the bake captures my edges and details i wanted, although I get some weird edge artifacts on my flat surfaces on my model. The lines are where ive connected vertexes together on my low poly. Is this an issue with my low poly topology or something else?
