So i've seen a few tutorials and what not that for unwrapping their UV's in maya they installed a new toolbar for bonus tools which had an auto unwrap uv tool. I was removing excess edges and deleting verts. I clear my history in maya a lot, like every 20 minutes in the edit window. I never had this happen in maya 2009, I'm guessing it's a win7+maya 2012 issue Just save more I guess
Thats your typical Maya alpha sorting problem. If you're using Maya 8, theres a setting under "Shading" in the viewport menu called "Object Alpha Sorting", or something to that effect that will fix your problems. If you're using an earlier version of Maya you're pretty much stuck with it.
