I'd say Modo. The modeling tools in Maya aren't terrible, but they can't be compared to Modo. Especially the speed of it. Maya has a lot of community-made plugins, but Modo can do what many of the more popular ones add out of the box, especially the modeling ones. What performance in Legacy Default Render and Legacy High Quality Render? Maybe try changing from OpenGL to DirectX renderer for the viewport. Remember to restart Maya for this to take effect. You can find this in the Preferences under Display at the very bottom. -
Maya 2012 freezing on Open/Save/Import/Project windows
After I open Maya, and go to File > Open/Save/import/Project/etc., Maya brings up said window but the box is filled with white and Maya freezes up. I've tried deleting the prefs folder and running a repair install but neither had any effect. Do I need to completely uninstall Maya? -

Most retopo tools can also conform a pre-existing mesh to a hi-poly model, 3D-Coat does it anyways, you can even do it in Zbrush I think. Not sure about doing it directly in Maya though, Nex maybe? Haven't used it in a while. -
