I don't think that there is a possible solution. 64bit Max can simply handle larger scenes than 32bit Max. So the way that you're doing it - splitting to multiple scenes, rendering in passes and compositing, is probably the best method.

Looking to improve my portfolio as an Environment Artist but I haven't tried nature scenes. Is it considered lazy or a no-no for you to just grab trees, rocks, etc from SpeedTree or other library's for your scene? Or is that something that would be expected to make from scratch. Thanks!
I can’t find a way to create bones from a central point “master” to other points on scene without having to write in the code each of the points on scene and that way I feel that it’s not efficient, is there a more correct way to do it? thank you. here I show you an example of what I’m looking to automate.
If I've setup a scene in 3dsmax using a bunch of instanced objects is it possible to bake a lightmap for this scene in max to use in Unity? I'm thinking you cannot because the instanced geometry needs to be given unique uv space on the atlas, and that's not something you can do in max and translate to Unity? Has to be done…
