Okay: Yes it does apply to all 3D programs but No they don't all work the same way. The order of the transformations differ from software to software, as do the vector directions. E.g. Max is Z up, Maya is Y up, what do you expect to happen to a model with a value of Z when it's imported into Maya? As I mentioned earlier… -

Well if you use the Generated texture coordinates then "in Z" the X and Y value are the same (copied) from X/Y. That's the reason why you see this "greasings" at the sides.. You may have to elaborate this to get a more suited answer. -

Blender has Z up, Milkshape is Y up. I use what my app uses. And nowadays that's Z up. -

I think it's about the OpenGL Z axis in eye space (like in a pixel shader), the "front" axis, going into the screen, is considered -Z.
