Normally memory errors at render time are textures or shadow mapped shadows. Shadow Map is bitmap for that light, smaller maps are quicker and can be blurred but larger maps give better shadow detail. Depending on how big you've set the map size per light, it could eat up a ton of memory. If the lights are set to ray trace…
Ok, I've been fighitng this problem for a long time now and I've searched high and low for an answer. Maybe someone here can help. For some reason that is beyond me, Mental Ray apparently discards my UVs. Everything looks fine in the viewport and when I used scanline. But when I use Mental Ray, alot of my UVs get…
Is it possible to render a matte/shadow material on a ground plane in mental ray in order to catch AO shadows on a render? I know there is a matte/shadow/reflection mental ray material, but it doesn't behave the same as the scanline matte/shadow. It catches the AO shadows, but the ground plane is still visible. I'm sure…
Its all built into the Photometric lights. To get area lights scroll down to 'Shape/Area Shadows' and set the shape to anything but point. Also it can be nice to make the light visible to the renderer. Photometics can be used for both Bulbs or a sun but if your doing exterior rendering check out the mental ray sun and sky…

Hey, So I am attempting to add some lighting into my environment in the UDK and I am having problems. The problem I have is creating god rays to come through the roof windows. I placed a dominant light shaft in to try and it was only visible when I moved the camera in a specific spot. Any suggestions or help on to make…
Hi everyone, I need to render water with mental ray and really I have no experience with this. I can get pretty nice results with Maya software but I cant get anywhere with mental ray. I am using Maya 2011 and every tutorial I am finding uses Max and an "Ocean Lume"...is there anything similar to this that I should be…
Hey guys, I was wondering about the technical aspect and terms of sun/god rays. Looking them over in crysis 2 they look like they are special version of lensflare. Does anyone know if there is a technical term for god rays and how something like this is achieved? I'm not asking how to add them to a level - I know how to do…
So my issue is that the normal's aren't baking correctly because of the rays hitting a near by mesh I'm thinking. Well the solution would be to adjust the ray length which i did but that didn't help. Second solution would be to set "Match- by mesh name" which I also did and it fixed the problem but also caused another one.…
I have enabled dx 12 and ray tracing in project settings. And if I disable "cast ray trace shadows" the shadows are there. And the sky light doesn't change at all, no matter what I choose.
