Hello,
Since the new delay happened for Unearthly Challenge, I figure I would spend some time to pump out a couple of weapons before it starts.
Here is the concept that I painted. I wanted both the sword and shield to be part of the same set.

This is looking really good. Though compared to your concept the spike at the end of the hilt looks four sided rather than round, and the spheres on the guard look to small compared to the concept as well. But those concepts look amazing.
nice concepts btw will be keeping an eye on you to see what the final is like

s0id3 - Hey Ryan, thanks for the crit. Ya I was playing around with other shapes and I think I like the four sided one better. I also made the bolts a little bigger.

Here is where I am at with the zBrush model.
Can you point out what zig zag lines you are talking about? The indents in the actual handle guard are meant to be zig zag. The distance is also creating that pixelated look too. It looks fine up close.
The blade is battleworn, it is not meant to be perfectly smooth and clean.

OP -Zbrush model looks nice. Keep going.
I got the normals and ambient occlusion baked out. I still have a couple of things to tweak in the normals and ao, but here is a first pass.
whats the final texture size gonna be? arent these things like 128 in game?
One thing I loved in the concept that hasn't been carried so well over into the 3d is the awesome claws, the talons could use some love and be made much bigger and bolder. The rest of the sword is really chunky and these could be made to be much stronger in the overall design.

00Zero - I think I'm either going to do billboarded textures for the fire particles or just do a particle system altogether. I'm not too familiar with particles so I will probably go with the billboard. Yeah the WoW weapons are generally pretty low res.
Johnnysix - Thanks a bunch for the paint over, I appreciate it. The idea of the claws is to have them mounted along the sword so that it is served as holding the blade in.

Haha sorry I know the name is really generic. It was just a placeholder until I thought of something I liked. Can thread names even be changed by the OP?
I tried to render this in marmoset but every time I brought the mesh into the engine, it would look all distorted and messed up. I think the error has to deal with the export settings and having compression turned off but I couldn't exactly find the option to toggle it off. I ended up rendering this in UT3. If anyone has an answer for this marmoset problem I would love to hear it! I really want to try it out.

I'm going to try and get as much of the shield as I can before Unearthly starts. I'm still thinking about a name for the shield but I think I decided on the name "The Emerald Clash" for the set name.
could we see the mesh of the highpoly ?

snowinchina - Thankies. The highpoly is zbrushed up, I don't think the wires will do you much good. The highpoly should be in the middle of this thread somewhere.

Also... I would LOVE to see a quick tut on how you paint dem shapes man, you have a very sick style, and in my opinion, some of the nicest hand painted models I've seen in awhile (next to Fletcher's of course...jajaja).

Jasonlavoie - Thanks a bunch. I will try and put one together sometime soon. I'm not really sure how I would go about making a tutorial on it though, I am kind of everywhere when I texture. It would probably look like a huge mess lol.

Here is what I have so far for the shield. I am planning on having some sort of cool focus on the emerald in the center. Maybe some sort of cool stuff glowing within the cracks or gooey goodness leaking out. Hope you guys like it.

Here are the textures for the sword. I was planning on using the extra room on the top of the texture for effects but I ended up moving on to the shield, sorry!

No but seriously your portfolio is really good dude and the work you have there is excellent I can see why Blizzard are interested in you.
Lastly and very minor, you could have helped condense the textures a bit better by putting like textures on top of each other. Like the little spikes and the darker orange things. Hope that will help in the future!
