Blade and handle are actually the correct length in relation to the concept (which looks sweet btw)... it's the gurth of the objects and size of the middle part (i don't know my s-word anatomy)
This is looking really good. Though compared to your concept the spike at the end of the hilt looks four sided rather than round, and the spheres on the guard look to small compared to the concept as well. But those concepts look amazing.
Eric. - Thanks! I ended up making the blade a little longer in 3d because I wanted a nice difference in the balance between the handle and blade.
nfrrtycmplx - Haha I don't know my sword anatomy terms either.
s0id3 - Hey Ryan, thanks for the crit. Ya I was playing around with other shapes and I think I like the four sided one better. I also made the bolts a little bigger.
Here is a update of the model with the four sided spike and gilding.
There's a couple big scratches on the blade in the concept, some could be zbrushed but the bigger ones could definitely be part of the geometry if you're trying to get as close the concept as possible.
You're getting a lot of zig-zag lines on the guard. Also I think the big scratches the on the blade look cool, but all the minute small ones in my opinion make it look more like stone.
Can you point out what zig zag lines you are talking about? The indents in the actual handle guard are meant to be zig zag. The distance is also creating that pixelated look too. It looks fine up close.
The blade is battleworn, it is not meant to be perfectly smooth and clean.
Great style - really love the bold colours - makes me want to start painting warhammer figures again!
One thing I loved in the concept that hasn't been carried so well over into the 3d is the awesome claws, the talons could use some love and be made much bigger and bolder. The rest of the sword is really chunky and these could be made to be much stronger in the overall design.
Hello I'm back home now. Here is a shot of the wireframe as well as a quick doodle I did while I waited in the dreaded doctor's office waiting room. It is just a character wielded both the sword and the shield, I probably wont get around to painting and detailing it until after Unearthly.
Lizzard4000 - Thanks! Wires are up now.
Ahothandsandwich - Thank you very much .
00Zero - I think I'm either going to do billboarded textures for the fire particles or just do a particle system altogether. I'm not too familiar with particles so I will probably go with the billboard. Yeah the WoW weapons are generally pretty low res.
Johnnysix - Thanks a bunch for the paint over, I appreciate it. The idea of the claws is to have them mounted along the sword so that it is served as holding the blade in.
Achillesian, Orgoth02, Pussik, Autocon, Kaburan - Thanks for the support!
Jfletcher - Thanks dude, I've noticed your WoW themed style stuff in the 2009 work thread. Great stuff as well .
Looks awesome man! Only thing is that the small spheres may need some optimizing. They will get some glow map on them, right? Then you wont have to worry that much about the normal.
You need to be more creative with your thread names, almost missed this jewel due to lackluster name
Shits looking awesome!
Haha sorry I know the name is really generic. It was just a placeholder until I thought of something I liked. Can thread names even be changed by the OP?
I tried to render this in marmoset but every time I brought the mesh into the engine, it would look all distorted and messed up. I think the error has to deal with the export settings and having compression turned off but I couldn't exactly find the option to toggle it off. I ended up rendering this in UT3. If anyone has an answer for this marmoset problem I would love to hear it! I really want to try it out.
Emerald Stormbreaker
I'm going to try and get as much of the shield as I can before Unearthly starts. I'm still thinking about a name for the shield but I think I decided on the name "The Emerald Clash" for the set name.
s0id3 - Hey Ryan, I don't think I am going to do them anytime soon. Perhaps a little later.
snowinchina - Thankies. The highpoly is zbrushed up, I don't think the wires will do you much good. The highpoly should be in the middle of this thread somewhere.
eric. - Thanks a bunch Eric, glad you like it. Shield is in the works now
ahothandsandwich - Yeah the flames would of been really awesome to do I am going to have to research making a proper particle system sometime in the future.
Also... I would LOVE to see a quick tut on how you paint dem shapes man, you have a very sick style, and in my opinion, some of the nicest hand painted models I've seen in awhile (next to Fletcher's of course...jajaja).
JFletcher - Thanks Yup sure thing, they are below.
Jasonlavoie - Thanks a bunch. I will try and put one together sometime soon. I'm not really sure how I would go about making a tutorial on it though, I am kind of everywhere when I texture. It would probably look like a huge mess lol.
Eric. - Thanks buddy, appreciate the feedback .
Here is what I have so far for the shield. I am planning on having some sort of cool focus on the emerald in the center. Maybe some sort of cool stuff glowing within the cracks or gooey goodness leaking out. Hope you guys like it.
Lowpoly(382 Polygons)
Here are the textures for the sword. I was planning on using the extra room on the top of the texture for effects but I ended up moving on to the shield, sorry!
Hey looking really great! I love the style and I love your texture painting it looks great! The only crit I can give you is it seems that you have a bit of wasted space in your texture maps. To late now, but next time maybe try to have less unused texture space on your maps.
Lastly and very minor, you could have helped condense the textures a bit better by putting like textures on top of each other. Like the little spikes and the darker orange things. Hope that will help in the future!

Do you guys like this version better?
Here is where I am at with the zBrush model.

For example,
something about your shield really reminds me of this:
i think maybe the color scheme and length of it
OP -Zbrush model looks nice. Keep going.
I got the normals and ambient occlusion baked out. I still have a couple of things to tweak in the normals and ao, but here is a first pass.
whats the final texture size gonna be? arent these things like 128 in game?

Cant wait to see the shield

The metal...very cool..
Any chance we could see the texture?

No but seriously your portfolio is really good dude and the work you have there is excellent I can see why Blizzard are interested in you.
