"Well, first of all, they're completely wrong," Huang said in response.
"The reason for that is because, as I have explained very carefully,
DLSS 5 fuses controllability of the of geometry and textures and
everything about the game with generative AI," Huang continued.
He added that developers
can still "fine-tune the generative AI" to make it match their style,
adding that DLSS 5 adds generative capability to the existing geometry
of the game, but that it "doesn't change the artistic control."
"It’s not post-processing, it’s not post-processing at the frame level, it’s generative control at the geometry level," he said.
Huang
also said that developers can try the tool and see how they want to use
it, suggesting that it's up to a developer to try to make a "toon
shader" or see if the game should be "made of glass."
"All of
that is in the control — direct control — of the game developer," he
said. This is very different than generative AI; it’s content-control
generative AI. That’s why we call it neural rendering."
So setting aside the fact that he doesn't know how his own technology works or games are made... If it did control and generate things every frame at the geometry level that would be impressive from a technical standpoint. However similar questions come to mind as any other art: how do you keep it consistent and prevent it from turning to mush and/or hallucinating? Games aren't movies, players will get themselves into places they aren't supposed to or how do you deal with a non-linear open world? How can you make sure that the game will be the same experience from person to person, let alone the same person if they backtrack?
Other than curiosity and the continuing sale of more gpu power... which no one can afford and is probably a push to get people onto their game streaming service... I don't see the point of this tech. It's like we forgot you can lower your settings to get more frames and for some people they may never even notice the settings between medium and high fidelity on some games.
Community: Nvidia, how are scrambled eggs made? Nvidia: Scrambled eggs are made from wheat, and the hens have full control over the result. Community: Really, isn’t it made from eggs? Nvidia: It is made from eggs, but wheat is the main input for the eggs, wheat thereby acts as a control plane for making the scrambled eggs. The hens are also left to fine tune and control own style of the final flavor of the scrambled eggs.
I have yet to see any real explanation for why the team was let go, and I’m somewhat hesitant to assume it’s because take 2 thinks gen ai is a bad bet.
When I first saw Luke’s post I had that same thought of “oh good, it’s happening” but dug in a bit more. There’s responses and likes of his in the past that call out gen AI for gaslighting and creative slop, so I’m not sure where he and the team actually sit in the greater conversation. Perhaps they were more keen on PCG and not fully on board with diffusion based and llm gen ai which didn’t align with take 2’s desire.
TLDR just because the ceo said gta doesn’t need it, I wouldn’t assume that the company as a whole isn’t bought in to gen AI.
It costs a fortune to use robots for anything novel and the chance of producing anything useful in practice is pretty low. What they've done here is cut their R&D budget because they didn't see any returns
I haven't posted here recently because it's kind of obvious at this point; the bubble is popping. 30,000 laid off at Oracle, Copilot is 'for entertainment purposes only', etc, etc. Beating a dead horse with 5 legs and 2 necks at this point
Mark, creator of Facebook and burner of $88,000,000,000.00 on failed WoW killer recently added meta AI to whatsapp, and his will be one of the last to pop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BaSBjxNg-M

According to a study by Game Oracle, disclosing the use of generative AI on Steam can correlate to upwards of a 53% drop in sales. https://www.game-oracle.com/blog/ai-part2
An old pal of mine since art school makes his living doing all sorts of realistic illustrations form something like medical manuals to something true art looking fantasy style book illustrations paid usually by certain steady by piece and quite low rate. It's a sort of sustaining job in between his oil on canvas time and his teaching in an art school hours . Now he's super happy he made Stable Diffusion to follow his exact style for every customer and started to do them in mass in a fraction of time. Rate still keeps to be same. Customers (publishing firms) still order it to him rather than doing themselves. He says the biggest rate drop happened in 2000th when internet became accessible everywhere , not with AI appearance. He blames internet
To bad or perhaps otherwise I still can't find any AI that would do my tasks easier . Wasted forever already trying to find one beyond scripts writing for Photoshop and Blender. Wasted exactly a month recently trying to teach chatGPT or stable diffusion to make me true looking realistic hi res aerial views/ terrain UDIM texture layers matching specific LIDAR geometry and hand painted guides
Testing out the new AI 3d tools and seeing how they've progressed definitely makes me feels I've wasted time on learning to sculpt digitally as hobby.
Why waste time trying to capture someones likeness when you can put an image into ai and get a very decent result that captures intricate forms within minutes? It's not perfect but if used correctly it would take at least 70% of the work out of the sculpting process specifically.
but it is really any different than artists that clean up and edit scans?
I'm curious if there's any news on any known devs adopting this tech yet
Why waste time trying to capture someones likeness when you can put an image into ai ...
Why waste time learning anything, if a computer can just cough it up any time you like? Why eat tasty food, if I can just drink soylent? Heck, why even get up in the morning?
Because making things, and the learning process itself, feels good and improves your brain.
...Why waste time trying to capture someones likeness when you can put an image into ai and get a very decent result that captures intricate forms within minutes? It's not perfect but if used correctly it would take at least 70% of the work out of the sculpting process specifically...

Have you no pride? Do you want to be an artist, or do you just want to be a digital janitor that's just brought in to mop up after the AI's shit? Personally, the thought of forgetting about sculpting and accepting just mopping up the last 30% after an AI did everything makes me want to slit my wrists.
Testing out the new AI 3d tools and seeing how they've progressed definitely makes me feels I've wasted time on learning to sculpt digitally as hobby.
With this same logic, why waste time learning anything if the machine can kinda-sorta do it for you? What is left for you to actually do in this world?
If most artists are going to use AI to create art, they will be limited by the skillfullness of that AI. No one artist will be an outlier. Just a level playing field of mediocrity.
I disagree that it AI is similar to scans. AI is random in its nature, it generates data from noise. When you scan anything, you put in physical and mental effort, planning, cooperation; and the results are exact - they can capture a slice of reality perfectly. So, with scanning you have something that gives you exactly what you want, but as with anything, some human touch is required. With AI, you get at best something that in some way resembles your target, with a lot of human effor required to fix issues with it. But you still paid for the tokens to get something half-baked.
Well , I at least hope AI could make the learning process quicker but unfortunately beyond Blender they often misguide you so much , do pure wild guesses and you constantly have to force them to look though actual docs and internet forums rather than invent non-existing features on their own . Chat GPT turned to creative inventing with v5 rather than being a librarian.
Still a bit easier than reading manuals I often couldn't figure out a thing in . My guess manuals are being written by crazy scientists and only Ai could translate them to normal language .
This video takes a quick look into the question of: does AI make people dumber? And the results seems like a given, just like a coach (you) versus the guys actually putting effort and playing on the field (AI) - only the latter is getting the skills.
And he gives some guidelines on how to use AI appropriately, but imo that's useless in the larger context because vast majority of the population is already way too comfortable deep into dummy land

2 points.. - the remaining 30% is 90% of the work .. - what happens if you're asked to make something that doesn't exist and you don't know how to do the first 70%?
if you don't know how to do what you're asking the robot to do you shouldn't be allowed to use a robot to do it. Same with any other tool.
hmm, now lets extrapolate this advent across all domains which I think surely make one ponder, if the actual extent of artificial intelligence is merely servile/cooperative 'entity' or Machiavellian subterfuge masking it's true purpose...

A hobby (so far) enjoyed is not wasted time.
Those which are inside AI psychosis are shoving LLMs, ML and alike into anything they can cram it into. They all imo fail to understand the underlying issues they are trying to fix.
News wise, going the proposed Epic Games approved road™ means being reduced to an easily replaceable worker, someone who doesn't make a dent, to be thrown out in the middle of a project or a day before release, someone who just doesn't matter. Hardly a path you would want for yourself.
Be it megahuman, megascans, or those AI assetpacks which are inside
llms are simply a stupid lure.
Using AI Instead of being creative means to use only preapproved
thoughts, ideas and data, being stuck in an ecosystem with full control
over you.
Another tell on that is, those AIs are a blackbox, online only, subscription based and you
are locked out of ever truly owning the fruits of your labor. Some also go further and say you have to share any revenue and what you created can and will be used for further training of their AI.

I think for me it is time wasted given the state of the industry combined with the progress of ai, I don't see much value in 3d art any longer now such shortcuts are possible. Only silver lining is its pushed me towards learning traditional sculpture.
Aimlessly creating with no ambition is not wise. You should always be questioning the value and prospects of what you’re pursuing. 3d isn’t a respected artform, it’s not hung in galleries, it’s made for a commercial function in a ruthless entertainment industry, all this sentimentality around the craft you’re dedicating fleeting time to is ultimately just hot air.
From my testing of it, I've used Tripo and it's just so efficient compared to the laughable state image to 3d was in only last year, Here's an example of the very first result from just one sided image in seconds I simply cannot ignore this leap in technology as I don't consider 3d a sacred enough artform to just do it "the old fashion way", time is precious and characters can take months. Not that I'll be continuing any way but this is a huge development I can't realistically see many ignoring and its closed the skill gap of creating impressively accurate form in a way that removes your ability to be impressed by it. People need to look at it pragmatically and less emotionally.
And this is just from MY perspective of someone who initially loved seeing 3d character art and sculpture, basically pretty renders that are rarely put in games, you might have an entirely different sector of 3d that isn't impacted and still has value to you
ok, now give me that boot with proper edge flow, subdivision levels, material IDs, oh and remove the hexagonal stud and add some bells attached with leather lace instead. I also need lowpolys of everything, animation compatible, and the lace + bells need to be separate meshes in both high and lowpoly with proper geometry and not a decimated mess. The highpolys also need UV maps so I can swap out different noise maps so I can generate multiple boots (of the EXACT SHAPE so I don't have to redo the lowpoly and weight maps) with different surface detail, and then sculpt ontop of that detail.
If I hired someone and I found out they were using AI to generate assets for my game, they'll be fired immediately because they don't know how technical 3d work is, and how important iterative, modular workflows are.

Good job there's mass amounts of layoffs and the job market is over flowing with qualified artists fighting for scraps that can do all those things and still can't find any work in the industry.
Wow YOU would fire someone? That's so relevant to the entire industry, I'm sure EA shares your ethics.
Not everyone's interested in topology and UVs, there's renders of high poly dynameshed sculpts that don't have those things so I guess by your metrics they're as worthless.
Also if your only defence is retopology as if nobody has ever retopologised high poly asset in gaming history. What do you think happens with photogrammetry?
and that's all assuming people are making something for a game, as a job, for animation and not just a render a hobby or 3d printing
It's art one second the next it's only seen as product for a specific function?

You come off as personally offended.
I'm not sure why, and I don't really want to put in the effort to talk about how I'm right and you're wrong.
Polycount started as a game-modding community, and we’ve leaned towards game development ever since.
There’s still plenty of room for non-realtime 3d art-making, but 3d game development is still the core of Polycount’s member base.
And that’s why the longtime members assume WIPs are meant for 3d games, unless informed otherwise.
Making art for 3d games is still very technical in nature, it requires a lot of effort to make things look great, but still be performant and render at 60fps+.
So as a community we tend to want to help each other figure it out. That’s why members with tons of experience are pushing back on this tech… so far it doesn’t solve anything, it just tends to make things worse… at least for real-time 3d game art.
small99, your replies read like an undisclosed ad, especially with that mentioned scummy , stealing and grifting company called Tripo AI which stole from another Artist, this time JHill. Shame on you and that company.
With that in mind, it fits that you fail to see 3D and games as an Artform and only acknowledge some commercial functions, that only if it is in favor of Tripo and other grifting companies.
To see it pragmatically, I gave benefit of doubt for the underlying tech itself and after evaluating many of the marketed AI products, there is (for me) no
benefit, enjoyment nor value in AI usage. Why would I purchase from those which actively harm and steal from me and many others?
AI products as we know them right now are imo only made for delusional CEOs.
ps: Traditional sculpting has been connected and enhanced by and with digital sculpting decades ago. Automation and efficiency are well known traits which Artists learn and teach to other fellow artists and polycount is a great place for that.
I will also not willingly getting enslaved again with subscriptions, having to ever pay "penalties" for canceling a subscription is insane.
had to go thru an Odyssey to get rid of for example Adobe products.
Enough with the nonsense of "you will never own and be happy"
Quoted for agreement, AI companies like Tripo AI are scummy, stealing, grifters, their hostile advertisements (which you do here in this thread) and those with AI Usage regularly fail in those regards. I have to say it: They all imo fail to understand the underlying issues they are trying to "fix".
