This is going to be a closed discussion, meaning its just for the people in the room. I am hoping to use a lot of artwork you guys have posted here as great examples of users improving, techniques being developed, what-to-do/what-not-to-do and so on.

I will do my best to contact everyone who's art I'll be using in my slideshow (again, not for web) and I will credit the artist in the slideshow itself.

I'm just wondering if anyone would take issue with me using the artwork without permission due to me not being able to contact them, and so on.

I'm not being paid for this, nor is IGDA making any money. It's purely me blabbing about how awesome this place is and things I've learned in my career and I'd really like to show us off to the audience.

Thanks. But back to my question -- lets say I couldn't contact you buy you had some images you've created that are perfect examples of a point I am trying to make. Would you care I had used it?

I mean, you've posted them to a public forum and no money is being made, so I reckon its technically "okay". But morally, and because I love you guys, I'd feel bad knowing you had a problem with it.

Ps: Not YOU specifically, Rens. Just using you as an example :P

I'm pretty sure no one in here would mind if you show these images on a presentation, that's why us artists post our work here, for people to see it, so I don't think why anyone would be against it.

As long as it wasn't work made for a studio with the intent of making money then I don't see the problem

As long as you are not running around claiming to have invented the internet and give proper credit to people, I don't see too many people having a problem, I know I wouldn't. Most of the people who are miserly with their good ideas never post them for fear of them being "stolen" (and they never get improved on because of it). Personally I'd rather see those types move on and not post here so, if you get a chance please piss them off =P

If I can get it recorded, I will. I'm going to be talking a lot about a job interview at Valve I had a while ago and how that interview pretty much changed my outlook on my position in the industry in a very positive way. (It's also why I haven't shown a lot of personal projects lately.) I learned more in that 8 hours than I had in years.

I've *never* talked about it here, so there will definitely be some new thoughts coming out of me on that night.

I don't think anyone would mind. If you plan on showing it in the context of people improving their skills over time, then all it does is it gets their name out there. Hell, they might even end up a getting a gig because of that.

On a side note seeing how people develop over time had been even more inspirational to me than seeing all those "ninja" posts, where people drop something awesome and then disappear.

Btw Adam,

If you won't be able to get it recorded, could you at least put up the slides online? I guess that could be a great compromise.

Well, if I were to give a topical example: Throwing your name in the hat of an art test posted online, where you get the unbelievable advantage of seeing what every single one of your peers are doing with the art test, and essentially creating the same thing they are. No matter how well its made, you need to show you're a creative person and ultimate stand out from the pack.

Would be fantastic to have a vid. Or even some notes with photos. Or just notes. Or even stop motion clay reenactment with with a soap opera style voice over. I mean whatever as long as it tells the story!

I know I'm not a standout artist here, but my barrel thread was said to be inspirational on how a person can be dedicated to improving their skills and how well I took direction from others to make my art better. It at least points out how helpful polycount has been to even the least experienced artists.

I just want to echo what other people have been saying; if at all possible, get a recording, even if it's just audio. I'd love to hear whatever you have to say.

I'd also be interested in hearing about your interview experience with Valve. They seem to create a really unique working environment, so I'd love to know what sort of things you took away from an interview with them - especially considering how many applicants they probably have.
