American Black Ale (it's a style not a brand)
Here's a list of the top beers in said style: link

It's like a stout and an IPA had a baby, a truly manly beer that the US should be known for, not this light beer bullshit.

    Shock Top
    Okocim Stout
    Arrogant Bastard Ale
    Red Chair Northwest Pale Ale
    Smithwick's Irish Red
    Dos Equis
    Redhook ESB

I love a nice beer and food pairing, Dos Equis hits the spot with many Central/South American dishes, a Kirin Ichiban goes well with Asian dishes, an IPA or Stout goes great with meat and potatoes, etc etc.

actually I had some really good Japanese beer recently. gf picked it up from a jap dept store. The brewery is north of Tokyo so I dunno if they'll keep making any of this delicious stuff :(

The red labelled one is supposed to be made with potatoes. Quite yummy actually.

    Coedo beer:
    img_souvenirs09.jpg

If you happen to come to China, try Xinjiang dark beer and Yanjing beer (beijing area only). In Shanghai, just stick to Tsingtao or foreign stuff - stay away from anything Suntory branded :(

Living in San Diego, I went through a big Stone phase, but I'm pretty over it. Anything by Dogfish Head, Lost Abbey, or The Bruery is likely going to be good. I generally like hoppy beer or a gueuze when it's hot out, and a stout or porter when it's cold out.

Get over stone! how is that possible..

You tried Greenflash or Pizza Port ?(two far better than stone brews)

For those of you interested in beer start home brewing! its easy and fun

Ha! This beer is brewed in a small town I used to live like 3 miles from. Awesome! Gonna have to taste that one asap. 10.5 degrees, can't be bad!
Did you ever try out their other beers like Augustijn and Piraat?

I don't get why Newcastle Brown Ale is so popular, it's kinda meh. Bishops finger or Spitfire and the likes are better alternatives.

Actually. I agree. I've grown up with Newcastle brown, I think I was breast fed on it and its more common than water up here. But i'm proud of it and I'm glad its popular around the world. I think it is quite hard to find in Europe though.

This is what I buy for home consumption. Easy to drink and relatively cheap. Taste a lot nicer on tap though.

Gav: I wouldn't know. Gulden Draak and Piraat aren't that common in the general supermarkets around here. :) But I found a specialized beer/liquor store where I can hop in on the way back from work. I'll go pick up a couple of packs/bottles of each tonight!

Chimay rocks, also one of my favs. If you can get it, I suggest trying out Kwak. Pretty good one as well.

Well, just picked up a couple of Gulden Draak bottles and a few Piraat ones, and I have to say, they're definitely one of my new favorite beers!
Gulden Draak has this very alcoholic smell/taste, but the aftertaste is glorious! But to be honest, I like Piraat better! It's a lighter colored beer, with a somewhat weaker alcoholic taste/flavour but equally strong. And also, with a superb after taste! I'd definitely recommend trying it out when you can.

Can anyone recommend a good Scandinavian beer? I like Norwegian beers, but there's a lot to choose from. :)

Gulden Draak is indeed super tastey I got to try it at a local Belgium Cafe with a mussel pot and some pommes frites. Perfect combination.

Maph, the only Norwegian Beer I've had was called Nogne O and it was a Porter, delicious, decently priced too.

there's loads of Brooklyn Lager around here at the minute, which suits me just fine cos it's ace ... i think someone twigged to import it in kegs, and are probably totally coining it now. Like some years back when a local bloke realised no-one was importing Bernard (the czech pilsner) into the UK and got the monopoly, the bar he opened off the back of it is incredibly busy these days.

    as well as the brooklyn

    and the ultimate :

40% alcohol, and £40 a bottle. The bar that sells it here serves it in a little chalice.

sink the bismark's very surprising, really does taste of nothing but beer. Obviously tastes bloody strong, but definitely beer.

other than that (and to be honest it's really just for novelty value) not a fan of Brew Dog at all. All this 'well aren't we wacky' stuff reminds me strongly of twats in hats i'd like to punch.

    Ahh...Erdinger!

I spent a few months working and travelling around Germany with a stock taking company about 7 years ago. It was very much Work-Eat-GET DRUNK-Sleep-Repeat most days.

We started off buying crates of Warsteiner which I think was about £12 a crate. Then discovered Erdinger which was about £3.00 a crate! We got drunk alot more from then on.

But I have to say I actually preferred Erdinger over Warsteiner.

Lucky Germans and their cheap, but awesome beer. Here in UK it costs 5 times as much at least. Now the only thing is to find a local shop that sell some of the goodness because Tesco, Sainsburys etc rarely sell anything decent from USA or even continental Europe. Might shop online for some of these.

That beer list is awesome! I've had a couple on it because my old apartment was down the street from this dingy little deli that also happened to have one of the largest selections of Belgium imports in Philadelphia. I've had both the Satan Red and Gold, which rocked, and Brugge Tripel which knocked me off my ass at the time because I wasn't aware that the 22 oz bottle I drank in less than half an hour was like 9%. Though I will say I've had several of Lindemans listed and they all were average to underwhelming, especially the Framboise, I almost sent it back at the bar because it was kinda gross.

I'm super down that I will most likely no longer be living in Philly when Beer Week starts up. Just about every non-sports bar has special tastings and uncaskings. And usually some silly shit will go down at bars because of Pennsylvania's harsh liquor laws and a bar may try to get away with selling beer from an unlicensed cask that was given to them by a brewery.

For you weissbier lovers: I can really recommend Schneider Aventinus Weissbier. It's an extra strong darker version - very yummy! It's hard to find but recently I saw it here on a restaurant in shanghai (and I thought they don't export it!) so I had to order one right away.
If you're lucky and see this beer somewhere on the menu, give it a try!

...or come to Munich into the Schneider brewery restaurant and give it a try - they even use it for the sauces for the food there :)

Newcastle Beer festival finished now. Tried a about 8 beers on Friday night. Most of which I've forgotten now. Here's what I do remember.

Empire (brewery) Strikes Back: Not too bad 6/10
    Rooster's IPA ( I think it was) 8/10

Star of the show was this. Really nice tipple and obviously a deserving winner in 2004. Could have drank it all night. 10/10

i don't think sainsbury's even had a particularly good selection - and i had a pretty large one close by. i was rather pissed off with them when they got rid of some brand of french cider - criminals!
