Sorry that I haven't been around that much, was suddenly dragged into a hobby project making 2d pixel graphics. So been getting into animations with 32x32 and 64x64 pixel sprites. Fun stuff =D
Sellsword dudette. Left in "screenshots" of the workprogress, would love to see how you guys work!
So finally it´s done, and no there isn't any nice shading on it but hey, it´s a concept - the design is more important. And I really don't wanna spend more time on this one xD
- Working with lineart was, interesting, but i'm probably not gonna work that way again.
I'm actually guilty of not making anything worth showing today...
kinekun, nice stuff! Some advice: you should improve on your colors. Start by picking random areas on photos, and try guessing the color in PS. Don't use the pickwhip, just try to get it right and inspect what color you are looking at. When you think you got it right, or you can't seem to get it, pick the color and compare it with yours. Getting an understanding of colors is a great deal. Thing is you don't even realize this but your brain makes you see weird things. You have to train yourself to see the real colors instead of what you think you see. Ofentimes you don't even realize that in green light your hand is green (as you know that your hand is skin colored), or trees are blue in a winter setting. It's quite surprising when you start to get the hang of it. When you are comfortable with the colors on the computer you should also try to look at things during your day, and inspect the real color you see. Once you get into this, your drawings can increase drastically. At least that's what happened to me.
Aleon: Thanks for the advice! It's actually pretty close to what I am doing right now, but I should be using the drop tool in the end to check if I have been choosing the right colors or not. Been watching some videos and tutorials about color and the color relativity, it's very interesting!
aiconx: that character looks like he's aiming for the ghostbusters team =D
I really need to get up in the morning, the days just run away, haha. Gonna be away some time from now on, visiting my family, so uploads will be sparse. Anyhow, today... dude-els!
edit: In hindsight, hard to see what some dudes are doing. Either canvas is too small... or I need to change attitude and show clear outlines, haha
Dat thumbnails Erik! All of them look great. No4 is my favourite tho. Both the perspective, and the colors look sweet.
aiconx, I love the colors, and I must say your left hand sketches are getting pretty neat.
Same here, colors are great Twoflower. You might want to do perspective studies. The hardest part of environmental paintings IMO is getting good perspective and depth. Your 1st and 3rd pictures look great (love the atmosphere going on in the BG), but the 2nd one is quite off on the perspective.
So, this is what I was working in the last 2 days (Day 20-21):
This is for a personal project, just like the soldiers from previous post. I'm kind of making up a game and creating story/artwork stuff for training. As a sideproject I'll also create some 3D assets, and I might just even do a few prototype programs on the game mechanics.
In between developing an android game and hurting my hand (again) I haven't really gotten into any serious painting latley, but here is the latest.
Test and scrap doodles.
These im gonna do!
Day 155:
Kinda scrapped the others since I found them a bit boring. Also I need to paint more interior, man-made non organic design since its kinda my big weakness.
I also wanted to paint something I love to paint, so the "raider" pic contains both characters, awesome vehicles and rocky environments
Yeah i know did it completly without any perspective lines so it really is off. I just always feel so locked to the perspective lines and have a hard time just painting and coming up with stuff when i use them. So yeah should do some perspective studies to get over that
Man your colors is awesome again as usual Just gona post quick before bed so will check out your video tomorrow!
Twoflower, that picture looks awesome! I love that flower thing
erik, I like he 1st pic, not sure about the 2nd one. I feel like the interior lost the sketch's initial dynamism and strength. Maybe you should darken the background and add some more complex lighting, so you have stronger contrast.
Day 22, 23, 24 - Polished my soldiers a bit, and tried to do some kind of city. It's just too damn hard
Those last 2 are clearly just WIPs, I just can't seem to get trough the block-out stage. I feel like I don't know enough about how cities look to make the details... I'll probably do some studies tomorrow.
Yeah Aleon I too need to do more city refs. Nice soldiers and nice perspective.
Completely changed the picture and im still not really happy with it. Oh well, I dont wanna work on it anymore, atleast there are some interesting people in it.
This is the one I like more, see how I just cut away what I dont like? ;D
ah Missed your upload before i posted mine ^^
Like the mood in the image and i feel the cropped version is more interesting than the uncropped version. Think thats because it has a clear focus point
Theme: 5 smal concept pictures of a cave/tomb system - there should be atleast one picture showing a larger room/cave serving as a burial ground of some sort.
These pictures should focus on explanation and how the cave system looks and works, it should be possible for an art team or level design team to use these pictures as reference when building a level.
Your goal here is not to paint a pretty picture but to do 5 small, fast clean concepts that captures mood and the id
I like how the sketch turned out Erik, tho I like the non-cropped version more. Having the focus in the middle is kind of boring I'm not sure if I like the guy riding that vehicle. The scene looks nice, but I feel like the character looks too big in the 2nd and 3rd pics.
Great stuff twoflower! I really like the 1st of day 74. Beautiful colors. The second one has potential as well, I think the idea would deserve a re-draw. And maybe lighten up the city more so it does not blend too much into the background. Don't forget to look at ref.
Day 25 - A mech for warmup in the morning (quite happy with it, the legs are somewhat weird)
Developed the city a bit more (still not quite happy with it)
Some environment for the evening (not happy with it either )
Although the pictures are not that good I'm really enjoying making these recently. In the past few weeks I've chosen drawing over other activities such as games or reading. I'm definitely getting more practice...
Aleon: Im also starting to choose drawing instead doin other stuff just because im really starting to enjoy just sitting and drawing while listning to music. Feels good to pushing out more and more pieces aswell : )
1 hour speedpaints from ref. Damn i need to go trough some face tutorials really bad. Had no clue how to paint a face. Well will go trough some sinix face tutorials tomorrow
Replies
Aiconx your left handed sketches are getting alot better keep going on like that:)
Thanks koldt!
Trying to paint more things with background and character.
Elf in forest
Some colour on yesterday's left hand sketch
Day 18 - Environment scribblie
Sorry that I haven't been around that much, was suddenly dragged into a hobby project making 2d pixel graphics. So been getting into animations with 32x32 and 64x64 pixel sprites. Fun stuff =D
Sellsword dudette. Left in "screenshots" of the workprogress, would love to see how you guys work!
Nice stuff you guys! Great to see it all floating!
Been really busy with finishing a game project and going to partys and stuff so havent really been able to upload pics in a few days.
Also my stuff these last days have been kinda crappy coz of lack of time
Anyway, here is Day 149 - 151!
151
Gonna finish my sellsword latooor
Btw, wanna try my game? Heres a link! - https://rapidshare.com/files/1367643603/Red_Earth.7z
- Working with lineart was, interesting, but i'm probably not gonna work that way again.
Day 152 -
thanks guys!
Looks good everyone!
Awesome helmet Kine
Nice reflections on the metal there aleon
Like her look erik! Nice chestpiece
A quick sketch from an awesome ref and the usual left hand sketch
Theme: An Environment picture with lots of characters (no need for detail mind you!)
For example: A crowd in a marketplace, a space hangar/station with troops, wildlife in a strange jungle (like a herd or something)
whatever you can think of that have: A, a nice looking environment (this should be the most important) and B, some characters/creatures/entities.
Style: Use about four or so small thumbnails as a base (make them small!) and render the environments however you like!
Videos for inspiration:
Environment thumbnail and composition video:

This is a great one so I will post it here again!

Continuing with some environments studies. It's not something I do very often, so I decided to keep it basic for now. Tackling one problem at a time
Edit> Haha, couple of minutes too late! Gonna look closer on that challenge now!
Edit2> Cheers aicon! I kinda like the lady in colors you did with the left hand. Easy start, but seems like it could develop nicely
Hehe nice stuff dude.

This is kind of related, very cool tedtalk about colors and optical illusions

2 quick environment thumbs
Nice challenge! I really need to practice more environments
Sweet thumbs there Aleon, I like 1 the most
some thumbs to start of and a character sketch
Day 5:
Day 6:
Day 7:
Aleon: both look quite nice.
aiconx: 1 and 4.
Day 153:
Aicon: no. 4
erik: no 6 seems best suitable if you wanna have a lot of people in it. can be really cool overview thingie
Environ challenge gonna be a real challenge! Weakest area, haha! Though today, random faces
I like 3 and 6 erik
Tried out some more thumbs on the theme walkways, one for scholars and one for lovers
then some colour on yesterday's left hand sketch
I really need to get up in the morning, the days just run away, haha. Gonna be away some time from now on, visiting my family, so uploads will be sparse. Anyhow, today... dude-els!

still drawing but slacking on the uploading part
day 70
Likethat arena TF
Nice street erik
Those are graet practice kine

Erik: Like the sci-fi bar interior
day 71 WIP
looks great aleon, awesome lighting
Nice erik, that last one really pops
Going on vacation with the family, see you guys in a week!
day 72 finished
Forgot to post this yesterday.
Day 157:
erik, I like he 1st pic, not sure about the 2nd one. I feel like the interior lost the sketch's initial dynamism and strength. Maybe you should darken the background and add some more complex lighting, so you have stronger contrast.

Aleon: 2 small tutorialss that might help. Think the second city shot looks more interesting.

http://fox-orian.deviantart.com/art/Drawing-Cities-2-Academic-Perspective-303467630
Erik: agree with aleon, think the people in the interior are cool but the interior itself is kinda booring. Like the bike one much more now. it has a good story going on in it ^^
day 73
Like the mood in the image and i feel the cropped version is more interesting than the uncropped version. Think thats because it has a clear focus point
Really nice cave, cool light and composition.
The monster guy feels a bit uninspired, maybe looking at some animals (try bugs and anytging with horns) would give you some cool id

day 74
quiet happy with how the colors turned out on this one
And not so happy with how this one turned out
