I wish movies used fake or deleted content in trailers to mess with people.
It's incredibly spoilery. I turned off half-way through. Oh, and the paranormal activity 3 trailer contained footage none of which appeared in the actual movie itself.
I wish movies used fake or deleted content in trailers to mess with people.
early trailers quite often have scenes that end up being cut from the final film.
off the top of my head, the first Tim Burton Batman had a shot of bats helping a young homeless girl in an alley. The Devils Rejects had the 3 villains walking down a highway (box art). King Kong (remake) had Anne Darrow screaming on the shore, etc etc oh and some (insert Lucasfilm here) are even so sneaky they make the movie look good;)
Was really sceptical about watching the new trailer, glad it didn't give any more away, or only slightly. That music/sound is so good, eerie as. Really looking forward to it.
Everyone thought the same about Avengers, and yet it turned out the trailers had like 5% of the good stuff at most.
Also, the new trailer only shows stuff that's been implied in the previous ones already. We haven't seen nothing of the new creature(s) or any of the deaths (the crew is larger than the Nostromo's) or anything beyond like the first hour at most...
Scott knows that Alien's success was built on it's unpredictability and shock value. He'd be silly to spoil the same kind of stuff they have in this one.
OMG are you guys serious!!!! this is a prequel to alien!!!! I guess I'm one of the few that doesn't have a clue. I can't wait to see this film, that was before I found out that this is the prequel to alien... hell yessss!!!!
did that audio clip remind anybody else of Event Horizon?
It's only because the speech has been reversed and distorted in post.
If anyone's interested, some people cleaned and re-reversed it into the original versions, but that'd be quite spoilerish, even if some of it is heard in the trailers.
I'd say it's the difference between expensive, new Weyland Utani uniforms versus beaten up old mining gear. The designs aren't all that different once you get past the materials they're made from.
There's also the point that a few people brought up on that Gawker thread, that given the nature of space travel in the Alien universe with it's cryostasis and whatnot, there's nothing to say that the suits, ships and whatever else on the Nostromo aren't considerably older than what we're seeing in Prometheus. Do we know how many years apart these movies are supposed to be set?
Yes and no. I'm personally more inclined towards keeping your universe consistent, but then as Cameron has also stated, Promethus isn't really a prequel to Alien (more spiritually).
I would have have liked to see something closer to the old suits, but only because I think it's more interesting visually. But I'm certain that 2 minutes into the movie I'll have completely forgotten to notice anyway. The reasons listed by Jackblade are pretty damn good actually, Scott has mentioned before the whole aging mining ship vs state-of-the-art science vessel, but since they inhabit a universe were hyper-sleep is required for space travel, the Nostromo actually being an older ship/tech makes a lot of sense.
Also, we'll probably find that David is more advanced than Bishop
Both Bishop and Ash passed for human very easily, Ripley did not find out until Bishop hurt his hand, and Ash passing as human was a very big plot thing in alien, which they did not figure out until his head was popped off.
Also keep in mind that there are like 3 or 4 types of spacesuits in Prometheus. Look through the trailers carefully.
By the way these blue ones are based on research that was only started well after Alien. They follow the other approach to spacesuit construction, instead of pressurizing it with air it's skintight to allow more freedom of movement. It's quite likely to equip the Mars expeditions with such suits considering the higher gravity (about 2 times that of the Moon), winds and other stuff.

What? Of couse it's a direct prequel. It features the same alien ship that was in the first, and how it crashed, and features the same space jockey. Sure, the point of the film is different, but it is a direct prequel, no?
Constraining the design because of a 30+ years old movie is what I'd personally call silly...
I disagree with this arguement. The Alien films all have a very clear art direction. Which was influenced and defined by the technology available at the time of making.
The Aliens universe shouldn't change because our technology improves or our understanding of what will be available in the future is made more clear.
If they did another Bladerunner movie (prequel or sequel) would you expect them to improve the technology or art direction just because our ability to understand future trends has changed. I think not.
As for the suit. I agree that these could be scientific suits and the nostromo suits are cheaper heavy duty suits. But there is about 50 to 80 (as far as my quick research can tell) years difference between Prometheus and Alien. 50 year old Scientific Suits would be badly outdated and any mining gear would be far more advanced than even the most advanced 50 year old scientific equipment.
Prometheus is going to be awesome and I look forward to it, continuity be damned. But I would have absolutely love to see a CRT or 2 in this movie.
Sure, the point of the film is different, but it is a direct prequel, no?
It is indeed, not a direct prequel. Despite a great deal of obvious similarities and places where the plot would neatly tie together, from what I gather there are deliberate deviations that would render it very difficult to be an actual prequel.
We'll find out properly in a few weeks time, of course.

I think we may be very hyped with this film. With alien you don't see the monster until the very end, and you end saying huh?
Watching the new trailer i had the same feeling of playing Metroid
kinda spoiler-ish

Shame. All the other trailers and the website got me really excited and didn't give too much away.
I hate the new trend of trying to shoe horn as much content as possible into trailers. Really pisses me off.

Sounds pretty horrible, they better leave a warning beacon so that future barges know to stay away.
man that never works, you put up a flashing light and its the first thing people head for.
What a great movie that was. I hope this new one is as psychologically disturbing haha

I know this happens all the time in prequels but how does the suit design go from,

They should also only use 30cm CRT screens on the bridge, right?
