Great stuff. How have you gone about re-creating this though. I mean from a technical side of things with scale of the original level and replicating the textures?
If you check my youtube channel you can see my texture process.Scale wise I took the base character which was about 98 units, then judged that crash was about 2 crates tall by looking at the game. From there I just made an educated guess =P I'm off in a few areas but I will be fixing as I go to get it as close as possible.
I wasn't happy with the old edging so I modelled up a new one. Only the base colour is in at the moment and even that is missing in areas :P I will be putting some little bits of fallen rock and dirt around the edges as well to help it blend with the floor.
Thanks man they where really easy to make. I'm still working on the best way to do butterflies though =P I have come up with four separate ways I could do them so far.
Hey, I saw no one offered a critique on Crash, hope this isn't too late!
Right now, he is looking a little too fat and also not as "crazy" as reference shows. I think he is a little more tall and narrow. He is looking very friendly right now and I believe he is supposed to be looking a bit deranged. The eyebrows are a little too thick as well. The eyes seem a little too big, but I think it's because his head is too wide. Also, my ref (google image search "crash bandicoot") shows his eyes are distinctly green. Your nose might be a little short too.
That's all I have, this project is looking great so far, keep it up!
it's not to late at all! I don't seem to ever be able to get critique though I feel like I post enough stuff. :P thanks for the input. Originally he did have green irises and we tried to make him look a bit "Crazy", But he came out druggie murderer crazy instead of just whacky. I will attempt some re-proportioning at some point and post it back up here. Thanks very much
This project is awesome and Crash was my favourite game as a child. With that in mind I've done a paint-over crit for Crash. He's really off at the moment and it's spoiling an otherwise fantastic project.
I think he's currently suffering from non committal form in that he looks like he was just blobbed together. The most telling sign of this is the way the arms look like stuck on tubes.
Hopefully this image is understandable and I hope it helps!
My paint-over for the front facing one isn't great but you get the idea hopefully.
Also I apologise for the print screen but I can't currently upload images.
Focus on the shapes and really try and nail that silhouette. I used the low poly crash from the first game to make my point as they didn't have many triangles to work with. Therefore their design decisions regarding shape really show.
Anyways, I love this project, can't wait to see it finished!
This is really helpful thanks. You are definitely right on the arms and stuff I will add that to my list of changes. I will experiment with the other points on the model to see if it works. Some of the bits will be fixed in animation as well. The nose and the ears will be moved down and flop a bit. Thanks again for the paintover
Chrisradsby, thanks, I will keep working at it. I have been doing this on and off for so long all my old stuff now looks terrible. If I'm not careful I will be working on this until the end of time =P
I kinda feel like the whole object would need a second UV + Ao pass for the model itself to get some more depth in there.
As for the brick texture underneath, I quite like it but it kinda needs some more depth to it. If you try things out just be careful so that it doesn't get too noisy. It'll overtake the pattern you got on the front
Think you guys are right. I seperated the two elements which was a bad idea. I retexture and post when I get a chance. Doing the VG Remix so I might leave this for a bit.
Finally got the character in. He is still going to be changed after the recieved critique but I figured he would be a fine placeholder. All the gameplay stuff has been done in kismet becuase I don't know how to code :P
Also got a new character model for you guys to critique! As much critique as possible ASAP because I want to get the character crossed off the to-do list so I can bring in the animator.
God, this is looking so awesome, amazing progress you've made! My only crit right now is that a lot of your textures are looking a bit flat and lacking colour variation, but that's not really a big issue.

New Crash, Still a few tweaks but I'm happy over all

I tried to hide it with ivy but I would rather make the texture look better.

Good luck man, and great work!

Are you planning to create a whole level?
