Haha you guys with your awesome painterly skills.
I'll be relying on my Hp a ton for getting correct shading, form, and such in my textures...
I have the time though so what the hell
Backstory:
This guy is just a clone of a clone. magically created, but without magical powers of its own. So the magicians who created this literally bolted on a magical reactor of sorts that harnesses the power of an ancient relic. There are pipes that funnel power to the lower robotics as well as to the forearms for maximum magical dispersion
Ok here is the first "no clean up" pass at the game res mesh. Im sitting at 2898 there is a lot of places i could economize but they will have to wait till tomorrow.
This is my first sketches for this competition. Hope you like it.
I still don't know the class of this character, I guess I will define it later.
See ya !
Swizzle, I agree with Muzz. The head doesn't stand out as much as it should. Exaggerate it a bit more. Perhaps have its mood in contrast with the ogrethingy it's resting in as I guess most of the time the viewer will be looking at the faces so some kind of play going on between them would be nice.
Time for little o' me to step out of the shadows.. I've been browsing polycount for like a couple of years now, registered a while ago as well but never had much courage (or something? who knows) to post. The amount of skill around here is liek.. terrifying.
But anyway.. Polycount is mah flavor!
Assassin/rogue -type of characters have always seemed cool to me so heres today's result:
I'll probably continue in the evening and get some close-ups for the little stuff and wrapping up the concept (deco parts/details still a bit hazy) before moving on to modeling which is my weakest point. Hopefully there will be enough time.
Put some work into the armor, redesigned my weapon. The "colorful" things will all be alpha-mapped feathers. I still want to redesign the hair, add maybe a few more details and possibly smooth out a few things with my 500 remaining triangles. Thinking I could make the caps on the weapon more ornate. Let me know what you think.
I'm way behind on this. After some thumbnails these were my two favorite, anyone have anything to say about either one? Which one might be better? I'm gonna start modeling as soon as I can decide on one.
Hi Polycount!
Here is my Technomage. I'll make some effects for him, like energy shield and spells, and make something with his face, maybe replace it by mask
Kengkard: Sculpt is looking nice! I bet those details will really read well in the texture.
Firebat: Thanks a ton man! I love the silhouette of your character! Very demonic! One thing I can suggest though, is there seems to be a lot of loops going lengthwise down the arm (vertical). You should maybe consider making the arms more of a 5-sided cylinder down, and use those loops horizontally along the arm (so your polygons are more square), and will let you push more shapes along your silhouette.
StefanH AimBiZ Soda: Thanks Guys!
Doyen: cool silhouette. You definitely need to use those 500 triangles to smooth out the forms. Especially the arms and legs. (Also if need be, you can remove some of the wrinkle geometry in the cloth, and paint it into the texture.
Swizzle: Looking pretty good! Good topology, and nice form. Get onto the textures!
Murph: You are ridiculous! Can't wait to see more!
Papa_Austin: Looks interesting. I think there's a few too many high frequency details that are so sharp they're making me lose the form. One thing you should try doing is raise the self-illumination on your texture to 75-90%, because the vertex shading is interfering a lot with the lighting you're trying to paint in.
r4ptur3: That is absolutely Killer! So much attitude. The only minor crit I can make is that there's a bit of uneven polygon distribution happening. I've noticed areas such as the boots, and the bevels are quite dense, while there's could be a few more in larger areas like the hairs (or even giving some dimension to your alpha planes). Pretty minor, you seem to know what you're doing though. ^_^
shrew81: Ha ha! NIce! Looks like techno-dhalsim. I'm a bit worried about how this is going to bake down to 3000 triangles, but can't wait to see it!
Onelunglewis: Absolutely killer model. Very clean topology. This is one of my favorite entries so far!
IamTopper: DUDE! That is way too killer. Like something out of H.R.Giger.
CAPGUN: Very interesting shapes and silhouette. This could be a really cool entry! can't wait to see more.
OpethRockr55: Not a bad start. It's quite dense for such low polygons. You could almost ignore all recessive mo delling and let the texture handle it (which should free up quite a few more polygons to round out your silhouette).
ridley075: Pretty good start, but seems REALLY dense. Would like to see more.
ZacD: HA! That't's pretty cool! almost like something out of a dream! Keep going!
Quintalbor: Interesting concept.
edoran89: REALLY nice model. Very clean topology, and the bake turned out nice! The joints are going to need some optimizations though (to help with deformation): http://www.pig-brain.com/tut02/tut02_01.htm
slave_zero: Very cool! Cant wait to see some polygons!
Thought it was time I got another post in edgewise. Working on a proper turnaround for myself, planning to start and finish modeling this weekend, giving myself a week and a half for texturing, and half a week of leeway.
Probably going to thin the cannons more, and wreck his left shoulder.
So, this is my first post after watching the forum for a while
This is the concept for my entry.
I've started to block it out to day, but it's still rough but i will upload a picture of that tomorrow.
You are probably tired of the "space marines" by now...
but i gotta, do what i gotta do
C&C are very welcome
awesome model R4ptur3, I want to see a little more awesome sauce sprinkled on the sledge. The model is great, I love the character and the super sweet cock hair sprigs.
I'm a bit late to the party, really cool stuff so far guys!
Decided i'd make something a bit silly...
So uh...yeah, probably far too silly but whatever, just wanna have fun with the pre-war comp. I'll go super-serious-evil-death-creature/thing on the main comp.
@ JacqueChoi, snex and zacD: Thanks!
@ madamec: once I finish tightening up a few more of the symmetrical elements I think I might indeed chop one of the horns or introduce some asymmetry. And per your request this gif is the best I can do currently:
just some 3D concepting but my plan is to make a tech mage that dosent have any own powers but have built a machine that can squeese magic from other magicans artifacs that he have won in combat, stolen or found on the battlefield. He keeps them in books that are sealed with magic to keep the powers intact. The artifacts can be anything from a magican brain, a hand with a ring, wooden leg and so on.
.. so yhea, this is just a the start, see u soon again and good luck to u all..
JFletcher : Well, i already like your concept, i like the intention, i guess the 3D will be a good lesson too :]
Xyniph : I like your concept, I'm curious to see how you'll manage these kind of shapes with the polycount, it's a good challenge :]
Doyen : That's a great modelling, it's really nervous, impressive !
Firebat : Nice start, i like how you work this character, this 2D render style is really interesting ! Good luck !
murph : Your concept is just insane, i enjoy your 2d treatment men.... Respect.
r4ptur3 : Good modelling, the small paint-over are really cool, thats really under control :]
JacqueChoi : Your modeling is impressive and the texture painting is just great. The power of experience :] !
Great job every one that's really cool to see that some people still like the good old painted stuff!
I've started the 3D, i have a sort of trauma with the faces, it's a real weakness for me in 3D so i usually start it before the entire character is done in 3D with UV. It help me a bit to start it. Anyway if you ask yourself why the body is not finished...
Anyway that's it, thx for feedback and good luck everyone !
@JFletcher Dude! Brilliant! I love it, I unfortunately have only built 3 characters in my studies so far, so I have to go super evil creature serious thingy now and for the dom war for practice! haha
@Ithoual Brilliant texture work, I love the design too...really nice form.
Ok Poly peeps, I realise im the new guy here, so at the risk of being ignored for the WHOLE comp, my name is Sam. Im a second year student studying multimedia, 3D art. And this is my latest WIP before I go into modeling! Im in Denmark at the moment on exchange but I live in Melbourne Australia, at least until I graduate. Ok, so now we are friends!
Feed back is very VERY welcome...
The sharp looking thing is his weapon, if I have enough tris that is, something tells me I wont tho...I dont like his face, I know it looks like a million models that have come before but Im still learning to draw so its a bit tough...
@samhakem
Hi, Sam! I think this is good idea to intoduce yourself )))
I feel a little uncomfortable here too, because I have no feedbacks on my work and don't know is that ok or not )))
My name is Julia. I'm from Ukraine. I graduated Academy of Arts as a designer. During 2+ years I work as a freelance character artist.
I chose Polycount because I heard - it is friendly and fun place. And it gives an opportunity for professional growth. So any critique and feedbacks will be welcomed
Regarding your sketch, I think everything is ok so far, I personally would have changed the style of belt, because it is slightly different in design than the rest pieces
Its so nice to finally get some feedback and meet someone. Thank you! I chose Polycount cause I love the forum and really want to be a part of the team...
And yes, I see what you mean, the belts seem clean and dont fit very well! I will change them...
I absolutely love your sculpt so far, the hair looks insane. And the detail on the body and the form/anatomy, great. I still struggle with this sort of thing...hehe. I will be doing a lot of hard surface sculpting for this models AO/Diffuse so it should be good practice...
Keep it up ok? I cant wait to see your texture maps! Lets keep updating each other and have a great comp! :poly121:
Hey Everyone !
Here my concept for my Technomage !
She is one human TechnoMage but her spirit is controlled by a machine; she is as a doll in the hands of this one. She is conscious of the fact that she makes but does not control her body, that is why she seems crazy
There is already great works !!
Good luck everyone !
I'm joining pre-DomWar. These are the 1st round silhouettes for my 3d Character. I haven't worked out the fine details yet just the shape. I hope to start working with the model tonight. This is my 1st character in a while. I normally stick to environmnets.
@JacqueChio:
Thank you I'm glad you like it. Now its time to get some polygons together.
I felt I should do a concept for the backside of my entry because especially the antenna-lightning-things and the cape and the way those were connected to the armor should be absolutely clear before modeling.
So here we go with my finished concept. Although I'd love to further detailing, shading and coloring it I'll have to stop here and start modeling. I guess or at least I hope the concept will be enough for me to work with.
Depending on how much time will be left after finishing the model I'll maybe go back to the concept and some color variations.
Tomorrow I'll start blocking in shapes to se how eversthing translates into 3D.
Didn't get chance to do any work yesterday, finalized some stuff today. Here are his current wires and I rigged him in like ten minutes to strike a cool pose. Probably not the final pose.

JacqueChoi -- your texture painting skillz are awesome! can't wait to see moar.
Firebat -- love what you intend to do with the wings! Take care not to run out of texture space

This'll be the first days work:
Some great stuff here already.. I hope i'll finish in time.
@Onelung: the model reads really well, i see you are paying a lot of attention to the silhouette. Good stuff.
@JacqueChoi: great start on those textures.. And yeah thats gonna be 1024x1024 pixels of ownage.
@r4ptur3: i can see you're having fun with this! Oh but why didn't you keep those wonky legs from the sketches..
@Firebat: somehow im getting "ash dripping shadows" -vibes from those wings.. which is cool.
@Fallen_Angel: good start, keep working! would be nice to see some kind of a weapon or an offensive apparatus
@JFletcher: can't wait to see this finished!
@Ithoual: that is going to be kick-ass! amazing texturing
@Sirdelita: interesting silhouette, is that a dagger i see behind his back?
Going to start hand painting now, woo!
