I'm worried that having a mask like that would infringe on the features of the pyro. The canisters on a pyro's helmet are one of his/her key identifying features. I would work from 1 or 5.
Zipfinator:
That's a good point about the CS characters. I wouldn't want to get into that style.
pw pw pw:
I was actually worried about that as well. I'm really not sold on the idea of doing a respirator.
Norron:
Yeah, I want to do something in a style similar to that as opposed to something like this. While it certainly fits the character of the demoman, I just don't think it looks any good, so I've decided to go with something more stylized or just not like modern bomb disposal helmets.
I agree with pw pw pw about the respirators. While it may be cool to have them, I don't want him looking like a pyro. Unless a bolt of inspiration strikes, I don't think I'm going to use the respirator. I do like the face shield, though, so I've drawn up a few more concepts with face shields and goggles. #1 is actually #3 from the previous sheet.
As for the helmet my i'd pick 3 or 6, i like #2 too but you couldn't see the demoman's eyes, and if the player is using the eyelande you can't see his eye glowing more and more as he takes heads off.
Three or Six definitely. I don't like the shields that cover his face and having a giant shield like that over his forehead is going to be kind of awkward.
i like 2 and 3. the goggles are a nice twist on it.
the others look too modern for my taste. but only cause i associate certain realistic scenarios with them.
2 and 3 have a nice "handmade" inventive touch to them.
I think the facial shield would work just fine, I assume it's going to be transparent, after all.
Goggles (on the face) I'm not so sure about, the demoman has a fairly stretchy face. If you can make it look good without the facial flexing clipping into the goggles, then sure go for it, but if his cheeks push through them when he's grinning or something then I'd say the shield or goggles on the helmet is a safer idea.
I'd say a combo of 2 and 3. Have the goggles slanted and colored an opaque color, with one end on the helmet, and the other end down over his eyepatch.
BANG!:
I definitely want the demoman's eyes to be visible, so anything covering them will be transparent.
Zipfinator:
I'm going to experiment with face shields while I work out how I could make goggles seem more fitting for a demoman.
komfyrion:
I'm not even sure that's possible.
Contrails:
I'd thought about doing something like a flight helmet, but I can't see it working because I have limited space to work with since the demo has a big collar.
Svdl:
That's one very large concern with the goggles. I'd have to model them and check face poses out in the model viewer to know for sure how well they'd work, though.
Xenu's Paradox:
I'd thought about doing something Fatman related, but I dunno that it'd come across very well.
Hotdogbunker:
Goggles hanging from the neck would have to go in the miscellaneous slot, I think. I don't know much about attachments, though, so I'll look into it.
I threw a couple more concepts together. Can't say I'm a huge fan of any of them, but I'm leaning towards 5/6 or possibly even 4. I'm going to try to give the goggles a second chance. Dunno that they'll work, but I like the idea of goggles.
4/6 here. You probably want the face to be as visible as possible. As someone stated in another thread the face is the entire character's personality. Not to mention you want the Eyelanders glowing eye to be visible.
6. I think it'd look best if the visor is kept as close to the helmet as possible, and is as small as you can get it - if it's too big it'll just be kinda silly looking. A thick border on the visor would help get across the image of an EOD helmet, too.
Also wondering if something on the back of the helmet, like you had in the first batch of designs with the unnumbered boring one, would help make it look more interesting. The helmet itself may look pretty plain when the visor isn't visible, considering the straps will be covered by a huge collar.
Initially I wasn't a huge fan of the face shield idea and I was leaning more towards using some goggles instead. Now that I've thrown together some blockouts in 3D, I like the face shield better.
Here are some ideas I tried out. I'm probably going to run with some variation of #2.

would be cool.
3 is too much....

I am sure the demoman would not want to lose ANOTHER eye.
im thinking 2 or 3 (not all that keen on something covering the whole face) and 6 is way too plain as is

if you have the time, do these things as a tiny item

but overall it's just hard to imagine, since you always turn your silhouette into something fitting...

Or something completely different:
Good idea, I love that game and there should definitely be a fat man reference.
I like 4, but could you make a pair a goggles hang from the demoman's neck?
I definitely want the demoman's eyes to be visible, so anything covering them will be transparent.

I still like goggles, though.
So the demoman can have a misc item that is on his face not only chest...
I feel these face plates make him look too much like a riot police :S
Face should be open.
Total agreement.

Well, to me, all of the ones with the facescreens look like it, including 4.
This.
