Ok, looks like some people like one of my original sketches where the rocket is strapped onto the axe blade instead of being a part of the back of the axe head. So I made some comparison images. Let me know which you guys like as I'm still debating it for myself.
The rest of the axe is still WIP as I'm trying to nail down only the axe head right now.
Personally I prefer 2 (although I would have the rocker mirrored from 2A so it's on the left) and 3.
Three because It just looks that much more dangerous and unstable. The 'blast' would also play nicely with the curved place of the axe, allowing for a nice deep slice.
Two also works with the 'haphazard' approach, however I feel the axe would be better as a straight edge, or even an exadurated convex curve to play with the rocket better.

I just noticed that I forgot to flip the rocket to the proper side on II. Since the pyro holds the fire axe with the right side facing the player camera that's the direction all the elements like the rocket will face.
Do you mean the blade of the axe would be better straight?
I'm goign with that one now too. Scudz made the point that the pyro wouldn't construct something well like the engie would. He'd go and break out the elmer's glue then tape it down some more to be sure.
I don't like it's profile quite as much but I am mixing two visually distinct and disparate shapes. It's kind of hard to mash them together so that both are still recognizable so I had to compromise.
Quick update here. Rocket axe is nearly done. I am a horribly slow modeler so this took me way longer than it should have.
I'm going to replace the trigger with a (hopefully) better one and maybe fiddle with the wires a tad more. Then it's onto mesh cleanup, UVs, and textures.
Model is finished. I may cut it down a bit more if I can but it's sitting nicely at 4864 tris. Granted that's about 3000 more than the original fire axe but I'm willing to bet that mine is about 3x more awesome.
Comparison with the fire axe.
Please let me know if anything isn't really working, needs to be changed, offends your sensibilites, or whatever.
Next up will be UVs, AO, and the first pass at a texture. Plus more concepts of the flaregun.
Is it too late to suggest something completely over-elaborate, and therefore hilarious for the Flare Gun/Flarepistol?
Gentlemen, the Colt Defender: An eight-barrel shotgun loaded with 20-gauge 3-inch Magnum Shells.
Goofy-looking as all hell, and just the sort of thing I would imagine the Pyro to build. Stolen shotgun barrels from the countless dead and/or cremated?
To be clear: I was suggesting this for the appearance of the Flare Gun only. I didn't want to change the Shotgun, or the way the Flare Gun works in any way.
Incorporate the rocket into the blade of the ax, Pyro cut some of the metal out.
Like this- *snip*
If you take a look up the thread a ways you'll see I had a model similar to tht except with the rocket incorporated out of the back of the axe. It looked alright but the form of the rocket got lost in the axe and it was hard to tell what it was.

Thanks for the idea! I'm still rolling with the filched items plan but I may try to work a few extra barrels into some of the new concepts.
I know what you mean, but I wasn't thinking a weld, it would have part of the blade cut off and the entire rocket visible and bolted on. The tip of the rocket would be hitting people so it's plausible it might explode the 'dud'.
Ah I see what you're getting at now. Honestly I think I'm good with the model that I have now as I really spent too much time working on this one and need to move on. Plus the idea is the axe is rocket propelled for extra awesome and the rocket isn't intended to detonate at all.
I do like the idea of people exploding when I melee them but this weapon doesn't really fit that idea. Maybe I'll make something later for the normal TF2 contribute that implies that. Assuming you don't mind of course.
More flaregun concepts. Crits, comments, criticisms, and curses all welcome.
I had a hard time making the tank's gauge read on some of these. Preferably I want it to be visible in the v_model. I also think that mounting the tank in a way that it works as the foregrip is the best way to go. Unless enough people take a liking to the Hawaiian style mounting I've got going on in #2.
I like #1's basic silhouette shape (tank extends past barrel) + #2's wrapped/screwed handle and big barrel holes + #3's hammer +#4's gage and tank tube placement. I wouldn't mind having a big gage like in #1 and a small one like in #4.
How would you guys feel about the tank being slung somewhere next to the barrel instead of under it? More concept drawings by later tonight most likely.

I kinda like the look/function of #3, i can't quite tell how the gauge would work cause from the side silo it looks like it's inside the trigger area, but I think the overall shape works best. maybe with the "barrel hole-thingy's" from 2 though.

The gauge would be on one side of the hand guard. I think the better route is having the tank tangent to the barrel and off to the side.
Also, how do you guys feel about the sight on top?
Looking good. I like what you've done with the grip. I think the hand guard could be a little more interesting, though. Maybe make it thicker, or have it connect to the bottom of the grip?

Or maybe just give it a little bit more detail, I kinda like how its not connected to the actual handle
I'll try something out. I was planning to have it bolt to the clamshell near the hinge but modifying that sucker will be easy enough.
It's going to be fun attaching the dispenser tank to this though, I'm not entirely sure how well it's going to work. And if it doesn't for whatever reason, I'm not really sure what to do since the flaregun by itself doesn't fit my theme.
I may still decide to rotate the canister more, I'm not sure yet. That may not work though since the pyro needs something to grip on the front. Most of this is just blocked shapes so there will be more detail on the hose clamps and such.

I'll give it a try and see what it looks like though.
EDIT: Here it is with the rocket strapped to the top. I don't know about anyone else but I'm not really feeling it as much.

Already tried that. It doesn't really seem to work in my opinion.
Yep, the blade. Flat edged or whatever they're called.

it's somethin' not alot of folk have chosen to do
so it could work brilliantly
I don't know about brilliantly but it might make a more solid design. To Photoshop!

Err, alright?
//I can dream cant I?
1 and 3 look solid.
I can already tell that cleaning this one up will be fun. Courtesy of boolean operations.

P.S. Matt, I told you I would make something for this
