Does the pipe actually work in game? I'd imagine that you'd get some funky effects if it stays in place while the mouth forms all kinds of shapes, potentially clipping as well.
Ugh, why do there have to be so many incredible packs for the sniper?
This is very nice work Mr Scudz, it would be wonderful to see this make it into the game.

Is that big gear thing going to spin while it shoots? Great attention to detail nj! You know, one idea I have is that you could wrap the stock of the gun with rope for extra grip. Plus it might fit in with your nautical theme a tad better.
I agree with Luxy, looks like you took the original and added a second clip and a grenade launchers ironsights. If you go with the round clip on the top, make the bottom one into a handle or something. I love the top clip, don't lose it!
it does bare some similarities for sure, i stated when i first posted it that it was based on 3 specific reference's, but nobody was interested in what they were.
the proportions for the "body/trigger" area are ref'ed from the existing smg so that they'll fit the existing animations for how he holds and fire's the gun. the actual geometry for that area was initially based off an old Owen Gun wich is an australian smg from the 1930's, i cut off the butt to avoid clipping and replaced it with the little pin thing from the game smg. but ultimaetly found that it just looked kinda silly and the silouette i started with looked better. While the barrel and Drum magazine are from a Jefferies gun (scaled down dramatically). the magazine on the bottom is just a secondary handhold.
The main grip is going to whale bone, to match the pipe, and the rest of the texture will be mostly deep grey/blue with some greens and a textured strap around that lower magazine.
when I get home and have a bit more time to type I'll see if I can't re-explain the theme a little better. everyone seems to be getting caught up in the Captain Ahab part and forgetting that while he's definately the specific character reference, the theme is Industrial pirates...
one of my favorite packs, unfortunaly for one of my least favorite classes...
a quick thought about the harpoon gun:
you mentioned that it will be a replacement for both the huntsman (arrows) und the sniper rifle (eversthing else). i dislike such a mashup because valve made them distinct for a reason, e.g. the ability to fire the huntsman from the hip is countered by slower projectiles etc.
i would prefer the harpoon gun as a huntsman replacement, that means
- no zoom
- arrow projectiles (with harpoon models of course)
- a fancy placeholder for the draw-bow-animation. maybe the gun needs to build up pressure before being able to shoot, with a little gauge filling up and steam leaking....
Wait wait wait...you've got a drum on top and a clip on bottom? Because that's how it looks.
I really want to be sarcastic here and ask you to scroll up two whole posts where I've explained this, but I'll concede that it's the first you'd think when looking at itso here's an adjustment....
he's already got Melville's Metaphor as a misc item, are there two misc slots? and do I need to make a 6th item? it would be a good place for it though... damn...
Each class only gets one misc slot item.
The standard amount of items a class can equip is 5
With this contest however if someone where to model a replacement for each of the engi's items, they would have to model a total of 15 things to fill every slot including hat and misc.

Number 2 works better. It needs kickass whale-killing engravings too.
Kraken Skulls.
Yeah I think they're about there too. Get working on something else!
the name will need some work, but i think the texture actually turned out quite well. it's using a 256 atm though.
No, no it doesn't.
I love what you did with the scrimshaw whale on the pipe.
The pipe would probably be like the Spy's cig, just stuck to the corner of his mouth.
If he can't get it to work right there's always the rim of Ishmael's Headsail to stick the pipe in.
This is very nice work Mr Scudz, it would be wonderful to see this make it into the game.

LOL that works for me!
I'm digging those mutton chops on the hat haha.
got the AO done, soon as I finish up the diffuse I'll have no excuse not to finish the harpoon gun. gonna do the wraps in the texture.

Maybe add faint etches in the whale bone in the shape of a grip?
I dunno, just a random suggestion
Your stuff is looking great, Scudz. The only thing I'd suggest is adding a couple of dark metal areas to the gun. Keep up the good work.
working on the metal value and a small addition:

Nice job on the rope Spark.
How goes the harpoon gun Scudz?
