I just signed the forums because see the work of the people here but not be able to say anything was killing me.
Just wanna say that your idea is one of the most cohesive around here.
Now some criticism...
The concept of the harpoon in the firts post poster looks more menacing an tough than the more finished concepts, I think it's because you used curves and shapes too smooth for a whale-killing weapon
I was talking about the melee weapon. excuse me if I wasn't clear. however now that I see it with textures and a bigger hook it looks better. I agree with nrek and swizzle about the rope, but with all the quick attack swings I think the jigglebones could be a problem.
also, I've been thinking that with the three items it would look really weird to have the razorback equipped, or the plain smg, so I've thrown some geo together based on 3 specific references and the directive, "if Captain Ahab had a sub machine gun, what would it look like?"
when I get into the refinement it might get more muskety, but i also don't want it to faar removed from the harpoon gun, which is fairly modern... for the world it's in

The hat and the harpoon thing are more captain ahab, but the harpoon gun is almost more jules verne.
It's funny. Before this comp I'd never seen one of those weapons with the round clip on top before, besides the Italian Wespa that sometimes appears in WW2 typed games. And yet they seem to be popping up everywhere here.
The texture mock up for the hat is looking pretty sweet, it might be cool if you had a light grey gradient going from the bottom up on the sideburns to give him a more weathered fisherman type feel. I would also suggest rotating the sideburns backwards a bit to help cover the original ones and also so that they are more noticeable from a side view. Maybe play with the thickness of the edge highlight on the knife as well. The front curve and the hook area could both use some nice thick highlights to really accentuate the curves of the blade.
ooh, I like that nrek, will definatley try it out, thanks!
Sparkwire: you may come to regret that;)
khthon: I'm not really a fan of the razorback to begin with but I suppose that would be the way to go.
jgoodroad: ...well it is very tall
Jackablade: I've mostly only seen them on airplane guns and there's probably a reason they're not to common.some of them even come with a little baggy to catch the empty shells:)
Personally I think a submachine gun probably wouldn't work for this theme unless you made it shoot tiny harpoons and have a figurehead incorporated somehow? Maybe have the gun accented with bits of whale ivory? Maybe have the barrel resemble a canon?
Some Ivory accents/carved refs-
Also, I think your hat should have a long sailor's pipe included. It wouldn't be too hard to do, and it would increase the character of the model, imo. Here's some pipe refs-
khthon, again with the excellent ref/crit
I was actually planning to base the detail/texture design on the 1850 Colt Navy, a gorgeous badass of a gun from the year Moby Dick was writen (published in 1851) but I'll definatley spend some time wit these ref's as well. cheers

Arcaltarion: I'm pretty surethat sounds like a good crit, but just so I'm clear, you're talking about the knife and not the harpoon in the gun right?

what do you mean
add me on steam and we can discuss this in private.
I honestly was thinking "What does a harpoon gun have to do with an Amish theme?"
Sorry
