How about a soldier and some sort of military vehicle? For example, make a tank, ATC, jeep, etc. and a soldier or 2 to go inside it? You could have a max of 2000-3000
It'd be cool to see a modern game low poly-fied. Really cool. I'd have lots of fun with Left 4 Dead or Portal, or even a 3d version of plants vs zombies.
great! only problem is, I no longer have my software, as i had to re-format my hard drive and change the dvd drive, but i forgot to take the disc with the software on and, to make a long story short, there is now a £300 version of Carrara Daz 3D sitting in a DVD drive in my garage
Also, I've tried Blender, but didn't really like it...
do you mean the disc is stuck in the drive? if so, most drives have a pin sized hole on the front. bend a paperclip, slide it in the hole, and your drive'll slide open.
I think we already had that...But in that same vein:
How about original characters in existing game universes.
Basically something like Barney Calhoun in Half-Life:Blue Shift...Your character could be another Scientist from Black Mesa or rogue xen warrior, a contract killer who´s next mission is to kill Shepard or one of his teammates, a new class for TF2 or one of Altair´s descendants in the late 19th century.
The only requirement would be that the original game franchise has to be recognizable to some extend.
I love that idea. Could really get the creativity going, having to design and model a character from scratch within a modern games design contexts. I say we do something like that! Just my 2 cents.
A suggestion from me: something around the theme of 'classes'; say, a Diablo-esque game, and you have to make at least two characters, each of a different class and fulfilling a different role, but visibly part of the same group/organisation/whatever. Whether that be themed around standard fantasy, steampunk, spy-fi, science fiction or anything else you can come up with, would be up to the creator.
1000 triangles and 256x256 diffuse per character, minimum of two characters.
Examples of games to think of for inspiration are Lost Vikings, Team Fortress 2, WAR, Torchlight, and so on.
Oh, let me reformulate that - those games are just inspiration, in how they have common traits for their characters, but still show their different functions and specialties in the game. You'd make a fictional game (I'm imagining an Action RPG, because that's a flexible genre). So, for example, if you go for a standard fantasy theme, you can make a warrior, mage and rogue. If you go for a steampunk theme, you can make a machine gunner, a sniper and an inventor. If you go for a space dinosaurs theme, you can make a tyrannosaurus rex with a robotic jaw and a velociraptor with ray guns.
I think making characters work together, instead of just in a vacuum, is an important skill these days, but you don't get to practice it a lot in competitions.
Furthermore, it would allow anyone to make a class that could work for Diablo, as so many have requested, but at the same time it'd give freedom to those who are sick and tired of Blizzard's stuff and want to show that the genre would be better off with cell shaded monster babies, or whatever they can come up with.
lol, just noticed that someone had suggested an l4d low poly pack, but I started one last week.
I'd like something more original than an existing game contest. But I don't really have any good ideas. Would be more fun to have someone else choose where it would go.
Maybe a follow up on the beat em up challenge and create an original beat-em up character? That allows for almost anything.
I'm with Zwebbie
some sort of class based theme instead of just doing a remake, but would we need a specific era or style?.
A remake would be fun, but a comp just based off class based gaming would come out with more original ideas and concepts.

I'd still love to work on a 'make the 6th diablo3 class' comp! semi-low specs so very manageable and a pretty cool style to work from imo!
I think someone already mentioned it, but I´m not sure.
How about "Create a main character/boss/enemy for one of the Side-scroller BEAT-EM-UP Challenge Entries"
You could choose an Entry you really liked and try to create a character that fits in the enviroment, story and stylewise.
It wouldn´t be that lowpoly though...Maybe 2500 tris for a character with a 512x512 and a 256x256 texturemap or something.

i had an idea earlier of making a tv, console and remote for said console, but then i decided i'd just make a low-poly Wii in my free time
Could be Mario & Luigi, Gordon Freeman & Alyx, Rogan & G (House of the Dead),
Recent games designed for PS/N64
OH MAN, Halo Reach for the Nintendo64
OHHH MAAAAAAAAAAN, SM64 for the N64!
Also, I've tried Blender, but didn't really like it...

well done that man!
but i really want to make pyro :P
Just kidding.
Can we expect a new low poly challenge when the Beat ´em up Challenge is over?

Recreate a model from an old 3d Game (early PC, Playstation, N64, Sega Saturn) in current gen lowpoly.
I really don´t care, just pick something and let´s get started people
