It's been awhile, but we've finally got something to show for the Umbrella Gun concept. JZeeba agreed to model the concept for me and I just finished texturing it, check it out!
(There are some clipping issues with the hand in the preview but that's just a minor positioning issue that will be fixed soon)

im liking it but imo the handle looks too realistic, did you put a normal map on it?

Sort of, I made parts of the wood more reflective than others.
I was going for making it look expensive/refined and to make it eye candy for the wielder. I do agree that the woodgrain is a bit too real-life and on my next attempt I can make it a bit more cartoony.

you should make it open up and be able to act like a flamethrower shield and any and all other bullets.
I agree with Doughnut Bear, that handle looks out of place. Good to know you're fixing it.
Anyway, I decided to remake the heart and machinery from Meet the Medic.
Although it doesn't really serve any purpose and doesn't fit any of the animations, I still had a lot of fun making it. I learned how to use Jigglebones correctly and how to apply Self Illumination!

Planned stats are a clipsize of 1, and to be able to open the umbrella on doublejump. When the umbrella is opened you can't fire but you will fall much slower, giving the spy the ability to glide slightly and avoid fall damage.
@OpethRockr55 if that gets in game i know what will be replacing my backburner as my primary for the pyro :P great work it looks really badass
edit: just saw the link for download, gonna give it a spin
edit: another edit, tried it out in game and it looks really awsome the only suggestion i have is to make the tail part coming out of the handle shorter
@Grimbodan, it looks cool and is a great idea. Just to hammer it in though, that handle doesn't fit TF2 at all... Other than being way to reflective for wood, the detail on the wood is way too small scale. Look at the wood on the Ambassador or the rocket launchers. I think you should either modify it to be more like those or make it a solid plastic.
I love the turtle neck but that thing is hideous and just so out of character..
Think French Riviera.
Both the turtle neck and open collar look really good.
While at first glance it might seem that the open collar dates to the 1970's, a lot of men in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's wore an open collar in warmer climates like California, since wearing a suit was still typical but obviously too hot for warm climates.
It's still fits the era. Watch madmen for instance.
We have this false impression of what the past era is supposed to look like, in reality fashion was much more flexible than we believe it to be.
As i've noted on SPUF, even the Venetian Blind Sunglasses everyone complains about existed in the 1950's:
Depends what you mean by sucks. Your design is simple whereas a lot of TF2 items and hats have something that makes them stand out. For example, to make it more interesting, you could have a mini-rocket strapped to it for super fast drinking. In all seriousness, you get what I mean? It's just a flask...granted the Scouts drink is just a cylinder, I think the idea itself is too simple.
If this ends up being a Razorback/Darwin's replacement I think the effects should be reduced walking speed and a 1hp regen like the medic's regen. Make it called "The Bare Necessities" (or The Bear Necessities) or "The Camper's Provisions" or something.
I tried my hand at making a knife for the Spy and I'm looking for some feedback.
Loving this, very Sweeney Toddesque! I'm interested to see how it looks animated and in the spy's hands. If it makes it in it most definitely needs to inflict bleeding on facestab (maybe downside could be really slow weapon switch?).
Seems that i'm really going to stick to the grey hue. It just looks so much better in-game. Hopefully the final version so i can move on to the commando spy idea.
First real shot at this.
Crits are desperately needed and appreciated.
this is great, love the idea! I agree with the others though, scale up the spikes a bit, and also make it a bit fatter (since it looks a bit flat on your side view) and you're onto a winner there mate
Hello! I registered here just so I could post in this thread.
I tried my hand at making a knife for the Spy and I'm looking for some feedback.
This is my first time making a model for a game, so I'm a bit nervous that this is going to get shot down.
I also want to add that I've read almost every single page of this thread and I've come to the conclusion that you guys are absolutely amazing.
Looks good, Going to be a bitch to submit to valve tho, my razor didn't made the polycount pack because of some crazy rule they have.
I saw the custom animation sets, but we're not in a position to use custom anims yet. I'll see if we can look into what work is needed to make it happen, but can't guarantee anything.
For hats, we've been cautious about adding overly silly hats to the game. The watermelon hat might skirt the line. Most silly hats go to the Pyro.
First real shot at this.
Crits are desperately needed and appreciated.
clever
Again, I'm going to say thicken up the spikes. I think the thickness is fine as is. The kind of cactus you used for the weapon looks better than the bulb kinds of cacti. I would, however, suggest to make the growth on the cactus facing a more similar direction to the main body. Right now it's veering way off to the left (would be veering right on the view model) which might look strange in the view model.
I really like this, conceptually. You should push it further.
It would look better if the size were exaggurated (aren't bear traps pretty big?) so maybe it's clamping down below his ears. Tilted so it's not symmetrical. Maybe if the chain had more weight to it, and less generic square shape.
The rod texture in the center looks too intricate, not simplified enough, it would look better to model an actual spiral loop and match the rod color to the chain. The brushstrokes seem too small. Blood looks weird, maybe leave a smaller hint of blood dripping down his temple on one side, not oozing out at every point of contact.
@Chalk ship: Because it's a shotgun replacement, as it is, it replaces all four classes shotguns, and when I contribute it, I'm going to set it for both engie and Pyro.
Sort of like Radigan Conagher made this alongside the Frontier Justice. But he created two copies, one which was passed down to the Engie, the other was stolen by Abe Lincoln, and after a bloody history eventually found its way to the Pyro, so it could go either way.
The reason the Pyro's the main class is because its an entry for a Pyro skin contest, so it was designed with him more in mind.
After the contest is over however, I may make an FJ replacement version.
@Benhenry:
I think thats the phong exponant, I set it pretty high on the valve, which is why it looks plasticy.
Scaled the spikes up a bit, added a bit of a bend to the top of the cactus to suggest a little weight. Is there anyway i could get a decompiled kukiri to scale this thing down with?

Definitely the best flamethrower I've seen aside from that combuster one and the train one. If you haven't submitted this yet, then you should now.
Well if you know how, than I would highly appreciate a guide to do this, as people have been complaining about my broken skin for months now.

There's a tube above the trigger that pops out like the regular revolver's chambers, but is only big enough for one bullet (thus the single clipsize)

Call it the "Loiterer's Leisure Suit" set.
And maybe a pistol that's being held with a napkin around the handle to avoid getting gunpowder on his gloves.
Or even a prison made pistol:
Woof Woof
Seems people missed this because it was your first post,
Looks nice man, how bout some wires?
Thanks for the suggestions guys, here's it with a plastic handle instead and with a BLU skin:

god damn it, the furry pound is going to go nuts over this. you're going to open a pandora's box
THE END IS NIGH! PROTECT THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN!!
Hideous: Clever idea, I like it.
Made more progress on flamethrower. Spent a lot of time uv'ing cleanly and it has paid off. Makes painting it easy.
Seems that i'm really going to stick to the grey hue. It just looks so much better in-game. Hopefully the final version so i can move on to the commando spy idea.

Ha! Brilliant! You might want to scale up the spikes though, so from a distance you won't have aliasing issues.
Constructive comments/crits very much needed. It still feels a bit off to me.
EDIT: Funny how you never notice certain issues until you post. The blood on the left is defying gravity. So...besides that.
You could make styles, like cat version
Suggestions? hmmm...something related to Jet Set Radio would be cool.

@Rust: I think the earphones could use some more work texturewise, like some more brush strokes and wear and tear patches.
Finished my steampunk contest entry:

Turned better than I expected

They will need to animate the thing themselves.
How about Radical Receptors?

It's a shame because your Ockham's razor was very cool especially with the custom animations.
Looks good! I know you are finished, but if you ever need to go back and edit stuff, it looks like the valve could use some smoothing group help.

Nice work.
combat knife for the spy/sniper/soldier. Fusion of design based on the combat knife that Rambo used in first blood and in Rambo II.

Looks really good, but as one last thing, I would make the scope and magazine a sort of of green maybe an olive drab for a bit of contrast.
