I want to get away from relying on custom brushes and tons of layers with blending properties. So i'll do a few speed sketches only using 1 or 2 types of brush and as few layers as possible.
Ok. The New CHOW at CA has caught my attention. As its the 200th challenge they have made it a month long.
The Brief is to create a Monarch of CHOW. It has to be human and the winner will be used as the new CHOW mascot image.
Anyhoo. I expect it'll be drawing in a few big hitters from the world of concept art. So i'll not be winning anything. Great positive mental attitude eh...but i'm under no dillusions. The standard of work is going to be UBER AWESOME!
Anyway. With the recent news on Frank Frazetta (RIP), I plan to do some kind of homage to his work. I think i'll be doing a Barbarian Queen character maybe with a dragon.
So Expect a curvacious woman. BIG hair, BIG hips and BIG Boobs
Monarch of CHOW. I didnt realise it but the brief says that it has to be music orientated. With that in mind i've dropped the Barbarian Queen thing. The music genre i'll be doing is EBM/futurepop/dark trance. This is what i've got so far.
Thanks Marlfox. I'm definitely trying to give her tons of attitude.
Quick morning sketchy
I've chosen to try a rework on number 2 though. Reason being is that its the most dramatic pose. I need to get more movement in it though. So will look at that later.
#80 and #83 have some pretty nice colour choices and I like your EOW stuff. Throughout this sketchbook you can really see how much better the pieces you've invested the time into usually turn out, and I would encourage you to continue on those type of pieces. It would also be nice to see you use some photorefs and do a number of speed-paints or fully finished paintings based on those. As said before, I like alot of your stuff (in particular, the cliff bridge and the hive) but I do think some clear 'real world' painting would really take your skill to another level.
Good luck and look forward to seeing more.
Yes. I agree with all you've said tbh. I dont use any photo reference at all on the speed sketches. And I know that if I did, my work would be far better. But when I sit down to do a speed painting I just want to get on with it and not have to dig out pictures to work from. At the moment i'm in a bit of a artistic rutt and I can't seem to finish off larger works. So doing speed paintings and then abandoning before getting into the detail keeps me moving along. I am learning as I do it though. Anyway. Hopefully soon I'll produce a more finished piece. I have a few big projects in mind. Lets hope I can start and more importantly, finish them.
Ok. Decided to do more on a portfolio piece im working on. Thought i'd polish the character sheet on the Cronk character I'm modelling. This is just WIP. I'll be adding colour and lighting.
Why dont you give yourself more time than 30minutes per Sketch? It would really help you going on on some Pictures. Dont excess yourself on the speedpainting thing. I think it doesnt get you where you want to go. Do studies and stuff, not random pictures out of your mind. You first have to get a library in your mind in order to make better speedpaintings.
Or even get some references for your stuff, you can clearly see that you dont use them. Not offensive, just a bit of critics.
Acapulco. No offence taken. In fact I totally agree. The reason I was doing quick sketches without reference is that I get 30 mins spare time before I start work in the morning and hunting reference takes time. So I just sit down and get on with it. I think mainly I've been doing these speed sketches not only to try and do a scene but to use the bare minimum of tools in photoshop. I used to rely alot on custom brushes, filters, layers, blendmodes, etc. I think doing these speed sketches has really improved my work. And when ever I do use reference you can totally see an improvement. I do need to do more studies though. Thanks for the feedback
Anyhoo...Back to Cronk. Here's the model with a quick sculpt pass on the body. Loads to do.
Thanks Marlfox. Tattoos...hmm...I'll have to think about that. It'd look cool thats for sure. But I'm not sure it fits with his character. Which I have yet to finalise. Will keep it in mind though.

Decided to go with the gun rather than the Tin Man as I need to finish for the deadline.

but this time lets add a story, eh.
I thought it'd be cool to do a modern take on the Knights of the round table. This is Sir Percival de Gales on his quest to find the Grail.
Feedback welcome as usual
