Cheers again guys. Im trying to power through this over this weekend/next week to try and get his design sorted so i can think about the final illustration. I lose pretty much 75% of april so the quicker i can get him locked the better. Quick update of where I'm taking the body. It's obvious that the transparent belly full of greentooths is the way to go I've decided to keep the flatter spikes on his spine to mirror the same shapes on the belly and provide a bit of rythm to the design. Arms/weapon/power ideas next, they're all linked
Looks cool! Not sure if you're still taking ideas for the green tooths, but I think it'd be awesome if they're also some of animal, or like cutesy/deformed little babies of the creature to help push the pregnancy angle.
heavens this creature is getting more awesome every update. could the green tooths not be biobombs or something along that line that it shoots out its rectum or regurgitates out of an orifice
so would like to see this as an actual mesh aswell, maybe after comp
Back again, working through this sucka Done an exploration for its main arms, the idea being that as its a demon lord it can summon whatever the fuck it wants to fight with from sheer evil dark energy. Thinking of sword shapes that echo the design of the head, only much larger. He also has a second form of attack which ill explore visually soon. It's not a typical melee kind of thing, I figure that he only summons and uses weapons when needed, his other form of attack would be basically to create armies of demons/undead from nothing to fight in front of him. Gonna be fun As per usual, ill probably explore the design of the arm itself a little further.

fightpunch, lovin the little design aspects like the opening of the arms. That stuff goes a long way and I hope you can show that in the final painting. I don't have any crits, so keep going!
wow...dude this is by far my favorite concept in this contest. Keep it up man, I have no additional ideas since you definitely know what you are doing.
Thanks for the feedback guys, it keeps me motivated when slapping crazy amounts of time into this thing
Gah, such a hard choice. After much deliberating and sketching I've came to the conclusion that the bladehead has to go. It only made sense visually when looking at the creature directly from the side, from most other angles it was a total hinderance and I could tell I was going to have problems when it came to my final composition etc. It was a v tough choice but you gotta kill your darlings right. I decided to try a new body/head which I'm actually much happier with. What do you guys think?
to honest i preferred the bladehead. I believe that youre right about those angles, but from the side- bladehead was flawless. This one defienietly dont have such power.
The new head design is definitely stronger in my opinion. Aesthetically and visually.
Stunning stuff, dude. Probably one of my favourite entries so far.
Im with Morte, the old head was visually quite stunning, even if it favored the side angle i think that it was still a superior design to the new one. if you really don't like the blade one, keep tinkering with it.
I thought the blade-head was more interesting, but the fat grubbles seem more in line with his body. really not digging the old skull-snoot on him, though.
I really liked the blade idea in concept, how the creature could theoretically sever it's prey with it's face and eat it. I'm not sure how I feel about the tentacles and how they would work for this creature. I liked sense you could get in the difference of weight out of the bladehead vs. what there is with the tentaclehead as well. Just my thoughts on it.
Hmm. Thought the bladehead idea was really nice. I liked the fact that the body had a beerkeg feel to it and a thinner upper body. Made it look ballanced. Like a scorpion. Good luck anyway one the new head.
I've been drooling over the concepts you made, but I have to say now that I don't feel this new direction. The blade head really made this entry stand out. Now there's the classy old demonskull popping up out of nowhere.
I mean, literally, it seems to have no connection with the model itself.
I wonder why the blade head poses a problem angle wise? I assume the whole upperboy is flexible, so in shots his head could be posed so it shows the blade off nicely?
So, for me, the skull/horns are selling it. I'd rather see some more exploration alogn the lines of the blade, maybe a hammerheadshark's head would be nice direction to explore?
Tough Crowd I tend to agree, really liked the bladehead and after a nights sleep and peoples reactions, I've decided to bring him back. A little from column A, a little from column B! The tentacles will help keep him fresh from other angles.
Nice to see a little exploration! But the tentacles now seem a bit ad hoc to me. I guess it's been burned in my head now that this is the sword head guy, and the tentacles steal from the main show. It's hard to say though, since we can't see it all together yet.
I agree it shouldn't hurt compositionally if you just turn it ever so slightly to show a bit of profile, and thicken it up while keeping a sharp slicing edge. Anyway depends how you decide to frame it...Maybe try blocking in some action shots to get you a clearer idea where you want to go with it, instead of working blind on one angle all the time?
I'm with snowfly on this, glad to see the blade head back, bot still not really feeling the tentacles. I don't think adding them is a bad idea in itself, but they need to be a bit more incorporated intot he design.
Still like snow says, we don't know the endresult, and I too am pretty much still sold on the old bladehead concept. Still, I'd give it a fresh look to find a new angle.
I'd love to contribute som paintovers to spark a fresh inspiration if you don't mind?
I tried to get best of both worlds. Now this is ofcourse a simple rework, only to perhaps inspire.
The idea is that partially mechanic tentacles with blades, fit into recesses on the main blade.
In the example it's executed pretty crappy, the tentacles could be as long as you want and ofcourse curve much more naturally and all that.
Cheers for the paintover pesti. I think Im getting bored of the whole character, never a good sign Heres a very minor update, gonna mull it over for a few days, decide wether to carry on with this one or start from scratch.
love this concept. I think the green halo's are distracting tho in the action shot, I cant read the arm mechanism as well as the concept drawing below, perhaps simple green excretions from the recess dripping and filling the fleshy void from where the arm talons fit into.
He looks like a forceful brutal type of combatant, to have him sitting back and casting or summoning is visually confusing when evolution has built him to be charging the front lines and tearing shit up with the speed and force of a rhino.
Please don't start from scratch, this is a really promising concept, I just think you've probably gotten way too deep into superficial alterations. I know when I start with that I lose my grip on the concept.
Right now my crits would be:
1) Really, really please ditch those horns, they just don't fit the concept at all. Way too cliche demon for this bad motha'.
2) The tentacles are overkill; i liked the previous version better.
3) The torso seems shorter in the perspective view than in the thumbnail. I'd lengthen it to give it a sleeker look, it's sorta looking bulky atm.
4) Stomach is good, but the entire abdomen is far too round. This is really what kills the concept for me at the moment. The thumbnail gave the impression of speed, menace, and brutality, but the broad stomach and the very circularly laid out legs just make it look tubby, which is never particularly menacing or fast. The main crit is really to slim the stomach down. Keep it inflated, but the frontal profile needs to be thin.
5) Lose one pair of legs, it's sort of packed.
6) The legs need a more dynamic layout. A little less circular, and with more front to back orientation to underscore the feel of speed.
7) The forearms need to be longer and more powerful. Right now it looks like it would have some trouble slicing you up if you just stand right in front of it. Needs big long chimp arms.
That's what I'd do anyways. Look forward to the next round of edits, one of my favorite threads so far.
wow suscribed!
That previous concept is way fuckin cool visually but its hard to see how he would attack. Maybe larger head and arms? It seems right now he'd (she'd?) have to be standing right over the enemy to actually hit it. Very original though! I can't say ive seen anything like it. I think the new guy is more practical but has less originality. Same level of badass though! fantastic work!
love the bug man very cool design. i like where the new direction is going with the people trophies especially, reminiscent of one of the bosses in resident evil 5 who has a belt of bodies. i think the rest of it is a bit less original than the previous design, so early stage tho im sure you will do good things with it! i think whatever you decide that it would be great to incorporate that arm design you pulled out, that's great stuff!
I do loves the blademonster, but if you're not happy with you're on the right track finding something else you are happy with. Whatever direction you take, I'm sure it'll be impressive, like the soul-prison guy!

i know its for summoning, buuuuut
talons come out = giant deathbeam too?
i like the summoning armies thing, but i don't know about the blade. maybe try other weapon types?
Thats a sick idea. love it.

Um, hope the idea makes sense
Gonna keep an eye on this one!
