Jackablade: That could be something. Will have to think about it.
Finally I have something worth posting!
Been slow on starting this thing up but stuff will hopefully go smoother now.
Since he will be covered in clothing I didn't bother connecting the head with the body, and the neck is a bit sloppy, but it will also be covered.
It was harder than I thought to model a fat face. At first I overdid it and lost track on on structure beneath. Putting the teeth in made it easier.
Forgot to mention, I'm having trouble coming up with a name for hom so any suggestions there are very welcome.
I'm pretty sure I want to give him some kind of noble name, like Urgal von Diaboli or something.
Worked on the banjo this evening. Will change the spikes and add some kind of base for them so they look attached to the instrument, perhaps some kind of stronger reinforcement even.
Will do something with the back as well.
Been working on the body as well so an update should come pretty soon.
r4ptur3: Found that clip a couple of days ago and I got the scene in my head where my demon plays the song and an opposing hero is having the guitar and they battle through music. :P
What's the boys name?
coldkodiak: Thanks! Yeah, who doesn't love banjos?
jouste: No, you rule! Anyway, I'm not set on what I want for my beatyshot yet. At first I was thinking him playing for his followers in a cathedral, but I guess I won't have the time for a massive scene =/.
I think I'll put him in some kind of battlestance with the banjo ready in one hand and using a spell with the other hand, will try to get it as dramadic as possible.
For the other render where no major postwork is allowed I think I'll have a part of a town square as pedestal and he stands and play and look pretty jolly. :P
Postjudice: Cool.
paeter: Thanks mate. Good luck with yours!
Okay, moar work on the banjo. And some old progress on the demon himself.
I think I'll ditch the organ since seeing how everything is coming along in 3D having something like that on his back just feels off to me. I'm also having trouble figuring out a good way to strap it on the character when the leather armor is in the way.
Also time is starting to get a bit short I think and even if I pulled it off I think it would only compete with the banjo for the attention.
nice work, I agree with removing the organ. More focus on the doomjo.
If I am not mistaken his name is "boy at the gas station" in the movie and is played by Hoyt Pollard. He also makes a brief appearance in Big Fish (apparently Tim Burton was a fan and had him playing the banjo in the ghost town) but other than that he's not in any other films to my knowledge.
pretty cool man, I like the little ties around the legs- I liked in the concept how his head was more engulfed in the huge collar, and his face had far less of a chin. Also I`m sure the texture will help- but his eyes were so beady in the concept which added a lot along with the boxy hook nose.
coldkodiak: Yeah, that's what I'm basing my decision on right now. It would probably take up alot of space in the uv, but primarly I think there simply won't be time. The first month passed faster than I thought.
r4ptur3: Cool, thanks.
konstruct: Thanks for the input. I'll try to give those attributes to the sculpt.
JFletcher: Thanks alot. It's not as neat as your model though.
Okay, so today I finally got started on zbrushing! Here's the current progress.
I'm kinda pleased with the face but there is something with the expression that bugs me, might be the lack of texture perhaps.
Did also a tiny list of some random names I came up with. You find any of these interesting?
I kinda like "Deathtone". Too cheesy perhaps.
foreverendering: Thanks for the input! Luthier Von Howler sound cool. I might go with that.
Perhaps modify Luthier a bit so it sounds more like a name than a title, like Luthin or something.
Finally I have something worth posting! Been redoing some stuff and adding extra meshes as well. In other words this has taken more time than expected. If go on at current speed I might make it to the deadline... but and extension wouldn't hurt. :P
@r4ptur3: Thanks. That would probably be pretty cool but I got no time adding extra stuff now, plus he would look less demonic I think. The thought behind the revealed hoofs is more or less to make him look suspicious.
coldkodiak, Kzo, garagerape, StefanH: Thanks alot! You give fuel to the fire.
conte: Started with a segment of a pipe primitive and then just duplicated.
I realised I need a much more dense collar so I'm redoing it right now. I also did a testbake.
I might as well show it here. I can make some more pics if my explanation is unclear.
Thank you soooo much! Makes it alot easier to fight on. Time is tight and I'm spitting out the lowpoly.
Character more or less done, got started on the banjo.
Might add more polies when banjo is done. Not gona spend too much time trying to make good use of all the 10k tris. Ain't got the time.
If there is a certain pose or certain enviroment you'd like to see this dude in don't hesitate to tell me!
I'm pretty unsure what I'm going to do with my presentation so ANY SUGGESTIONS GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Ged: Dunno about that. The banjo costed a few polies though because of all its small parts. :P
Kzo: Yes! But then he will play Duelling Banjos!
Okay so small update. Done the uv's. Not my best layout I've done but those pieces where harder to arrange than expected... or maybe I'm just tired. :P
Tomorrow/today is bakingday!
Okay, had a look again the next day and noted to self never do uv' 4am in the morning. So started over and then spend about two days preparing meshes and baking the maps.
Anyway, here's how it looks now. Put in some basic colors. Nothing settled yet so I'm open for suggestions.

Okay... some blocking out, some modelling, much to be done.

the killer banjo is fantastic! if you are looking for a funny or unique name maybe reference the banjo player from deliverance?

if you haven't seen it before it's a creepy movie and and reference to it at all would be effing sick imo.
nice work! MORE!!

Will add the stripes on his arms and legs and then I will take it all in for sculpting.
Would also appreciate any input about the whole idea with the organ, if the character would be better off without it.
I would make your decision based on technical reasons: saving texture space, polycount, and time or if you really really want it in.
Keep going, nice stuff!
nice modeling

A Luthier is a maker of stringed instruments:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luthier
Here's a list of stringed instruments for more name ideas maybe
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_string_instruments
Alternatively, I also like Belfos and Merdos

I wonder what he would look like with cloven jester shoes?
@konstruct:
Moar work. Still got a bunch of detailing left. I think the teeth will be a pain, but we'll see.
AWesome sculpt. Colors are gonna make this fly.
Great work!!!!! (love those chirurgical-SM gloves!!!)
I love the colar, the clothes design and
the demonic horned guitar!
how did you make that collar?
conte: Started with a segment of a pipe primitive and then just duplicated.

Finally made my submission thingy as well. I'm going for Luthier. I'll add his full name + even a nickname in the presentation.
Off to make some lowpolymagick!
Character more or less done, got started on the banjo.

Thanks and good night fellow polycounters!
And 7 day extension, wohooo!
Okay, so lowpoly complete. Next will be unwrapping and baking. Will do some testbaking before settling final uv-layout.
